  1. RUN away as fast as you can IMO. Limited Register papers are proof you dog is a pedigreed purebred, it has a whole family tree with all sorts of information if you wanted it. Are they really registered breeders? or did you get the spill about those on main register are really a lot more expensive and because you only want a pet it doesnt matter if you dont get main register Buyer beware, it does not cost a lot of money for the papers themselves I rang a "breeder" about a litter of pups in the paper a while ago , now this twit had all the answers but i know for a fact she is NOT a registered breeder. She basically said that she is selling them with out the papers at the moment becasue she was moving house and would have to dig up the paperwork, but if i did want them the puppy would cost an extra $500. sadly people would have bought this story not knowing better. They always sound lovely and convincing and have all the answers, have you checked that they are actually a CURRENT registered breeder? and what was the reasoning for not supplying the limited register papers?
  2. Glad all went well on the little bloke In answer to BellaDonna is basically yes and no lol. So many problems in breeds and crossbreds are recessive and therefore can not be guarenteed free of the defect. But in a court of law things can go either way and both ways i have seen. But is usually either way ends up in court at a great expense to both. I as a breeder do not deliberately set out to sell sick or deformed puppies but things can happen that we can not see. I always sell with 6 weeks free pet insurance and strongly recommend the buyers continues this. But sadly there are many breeders and i use the term losely who do not care.
  3. I was actually sitting here at 10pm at night and recieved a text message from a perspective buyer , well after exchanging a few text message back and forth he rang me , i found him more than suitable and the dog flew to Victoria 2 days later , Guess what ? he is one of the best homes i have ever sold to !!!!!
  4. The reason for the interbreeding of the bull terrier and miniature was a health one, to try and lessen the PLL situation and increase the gene pool of the breed, as bull terriers do not have heriditory PLL. As of October last year the gene responsible was discovered and we can now DNA test for it, interbreeding in this country is to continue until i think 2013? The ANKC has made this decision and was not one taken lightly. UK , NZKC and other kennel clubs around the world have also made the same decision. Interbreeding between varietys is not common and only few breeds are allowable by the ANKC
  5. I do them in my breed (bull terreir miniatures) some breeders do and some dont , i do because i find this breed has many problem left on for themselves and thier owners it is like a thumb to them. Anyway i do remove them and sometimes i admit i accidently forget to tell the new owners which is bad for me but i must try and remember.
  6. BB What point cant you understand in SOUTH AUSTRALIA WE CAN NOT SELL THE PUPPIES WITH THE PAPERS AT THE SAME TIME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We must transfer them OURSELVES to the NEW OWNER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and this can take weeks or even months at times so dont ever buy a puppy from SA
  7. Actually the maternal anti bodies are not over ridden by the vaccination , it is when the antibodies drop that the vaccination picks it up, so for instance if the puppy is done at 6 weeks they still may have a high percentage of the anti bodies from their mother and the vaccination is then rendered useless, the next vaccination they may have lost more and therefor the vaccination kicks in. This is why vaccines like Protech have a different recommendation to other brands. Unless you titre test (which btw is expensive ) you have no idea therefore it is best to vaccinate as the company of vaccine recommends. BTW This is why it is important to not let young puppies around a high dog traffic area even with their vaccinations as we do not know when the anti bodies and/or vaccine has kicked in so therefore things like parvo are still a threat.
  8. In South Australia the BREEEDER has to transfer the papers to the new owner. By the time the litter is registered and we get the papers back , then transfer them to the new owners it can take a few months. We can not do any of this on line either so when a puppy is sold i wait till they are nearly all gone before i go (to their office as i dont trust Australia Post not to loose them) and transfer them i think we have 14 days after the sale. So the new puppy buyer can have a fair wait. I always give them in their folder a space with and A4 printed letter satating " Your puppy is registered with DOGSA this is where your Limited registration paper goes, this may take months to recieve , The puppy will be in you name you will recieve the registration paper directly from them, if you have any concerns at all please contact me and i will let you know their progress" Once i transfer them i then direct all calls and enquires to DOGSSA. I have to admit though the last few litters they have been super quick in a matter of weeks. Oh and BTW i use the Limited Register on every thing i do not keep for myself, people are buying from me first and foremost a family pet, and yes they are made FULLy aware of this fact and what it means.

    Bull Terrier

    1. What is my relationship with the breed? (ie breeder, first time owner etc) Have had Bull Terriers for over 20 years, Miniatures for past 8 years Breeder miniatures only /exhibitor/owner 2. Where and why was the breed first developed? They were bred for ratting (smaller ones) and for dog fighting dogs or equal weight and size , they were then refined for the show ring. Originally called the bull and terrier in around 1850 Jim Hinks refined the breed and was first shown in Birmingham UK in 1862. In 1918 the miniature was de registered until 1938 when they were once again a recognised breed 3. How common is it in Australia? The Bull Terrier was hugely popular in the 80s and 90s these days sadly the numbers are low approx 700 registered a year . The miniature was reintroduced back into Australia in the 80s and has very slowly gaining ground now around 250 per year registered. It can be a long wait for a puppy at times. 4. What is the average lifespan? Life span is usually 10-12 years plus. My oldest Bull Terrier was 15 5. What is the general temperament/personality? Loves people, has a great personality and will make you laugh all day every day. Very stubborn but never confuse this for being a stupid breed they are very smart and have the attitude of "whats in it for me to do as you ask?" They have to be near you and with you all the times (including sitting on your feet). In to everything open the cupboard door their nose is there, open the fridge door the nose is there 6. How much daily exercise is needed for the average adult? A daily walk or play out the back yard with a tennis ball. They can not have toys as such , they do have a tendency of destroying things they are powerful and they will swallow many unusual things, Many a bull terrier has ended up at the vets having obstructions removed. Keeping them physically and mentally fit will usually help lesson damage. 7. Is it a breed that a first time dog owner could easily cope with? Yes and no if you are used to bull breeds or mastiff breeds with that stubborn dominant kind of streak then although you still arent prepared for one it will be easier. A firm hand is needed and consistancy. they are not a breed for everyone but if you and your family have the right personality your self then they will be fine. The looks are just the beginning. This is probably one of the hardest breeds to own 8. Can solo dogs of this breed easily occupy themselves for long periods? YES , this breed does not need another "playmate" they love to be the only dog and thrive on human companionship when you are home as long as you are prepared to give that and regular exercise. I NEVER recommend another dog in the house hold with them 9. How much grooming is required? Weekly washing, keep nails trimmed, ears cleaned once a month, occasional bath and thats it 10. Is it too boisterous for very small children or for infirm people (unless the dog is well trained)? They are great with kids and the elderly BUT they must be in the right enviroment and trained , Because of their solid structure they can easily accidently knock them over (and boy do they feel bad when it happens) so care is needed. Older kids and those elderly who know their traits they are fantastic with 11. Are there any common hereditary problems a puppy buyer should be aware of? Like all breeds and crossbreeds there can be heriditory problems, some are recessive and some dominant. Dominant problems are easy just test the parents clear, but in this breed most are reccesive meaning both paretns tested/checked clear dos not mean the offspring will not inherit the problem 12. When buying a puppy, what are the things you should ask of the breeder? (eg what health tests have been done (if applicable) and what is an acceptable result to those tests so the buyer has an idea of what the result should be) Hearing- BAER tested for hearing in both whites and coloureds, this can be done at 6 weeks of age. This test is now readily available to most breeders in this country make sure you get an original certificate Heart - Mytral Valve Dysplasia and Sub Aortic stenosis parents to be tested but bear in mind not many breeders int his country have access to the specialists incvloved in this detecting these problems. Most breeders rely on the veterinary surgeons to detect any abnormalities. These are als recessive and does not mean the puppy will be free of them. Most vets will listen to the hearts at the first 6 weeks vaccination. Kidneys - PKD and Heriditory Nephritis , is is recommended that a ultrasound be done on the parents PKD is dominant so there for 2 clear parents the offspring is clear. Nephritis it is recommended on the parents that a UPC ratio is done but this is just a guide and DOES NOT prove if they have it or not Pattella Luxation - The knee cap is checked, this is also a recessive and vets usually check at 6 weeks BUT this condition can occur later enviroment and injury can also play a part. PLL (Primary Lens Luxation) Miniatures ONLY. This can now through the use of DNA as of October 2009 be checked for , as it is still new many breeders have already tested their breeding animals and many pets in their lines, some are still in the process of doing it. The puppies do nt have to be tested if both parents are clear. As the gene pool is low breeders are and will be using carriers and affecteds int hat case make sure you get proof of the puppies results. I would like to add the Bull Terrier written standard does not have a height or weight they can be any size they want(EG 12" to 24"), where as the Miniature has a height which states 'should not exceed 14"' before the advent of the DNA test for PLL in miniatures the only way breeders could try and avoid and increase the gene pool was to interbreed (one parent being bull terrier one being a miniatures) this is still allowable in this country through the ANKC. Basically it has increased the size of our miniatures considerably you can often find them small at 12" or even as tall as 18" in height or over these dogs are still registered miniatures. Now the testing is accessable for us the future offspring should come down a lot in size over many years yet , but most of all they should look like a Bull Terrier in every other way.
  10. To answer your question Aussie bulldogs are crossbreds they are NOT a ANKC recognised breed and the UABA is NOT a ANKC recognised organisation. They we invented as "suitable to australia bulldog " i have had many arguements over this but the believers never test for anything but they claim to be "healthier ????? I doubt Their "pedigrees" are never going to be recognised as they do not follow procedure to allow it to be registered with the ANKC as a new breed. Unless someone has finally taken the bull by the horn and put correct procedures in place Oh and Noel Green what a delightful guy he is Cheers
  11. Ring Wolfgang, he will tell you what you need to know. I think you have to start as a social club first and be successfull It is extremely hard Is there many people in your breed
  12. OK I will try and make it simple for future buyers A registered breeder ANKC (Australian National Kennel Council not any of those dodgy made up registries ) A breeder must register with their state EG DogsNSW if the breeder is in NSW etc The mother and Father MUST be on MAIN register and have no exclusions. The Registered breeder then must register the litter and register ALL puppies from that litter on either Main or Limited register (all states now including SA, WA you still dont have to) When you purchase a puppy from a registered breeder then the puppies will come with papers (they may not have them at the time of collecting your puppy EG in SA we register them and then DOGSSA send the papers to US the BREEDER FIRST then we have to transfer them to the NEW owner, all states have different rulings) There should NOT be a money difference on papers or no papers WHY because the papers cost us breeders stuff all money In SA it is $20.50 for Main register, $22.00 for Limited Register, then our transfer fee THAT the breeder pays which is $27.50 . So all up it costs the breeder either $48.00 or $49.50 not the hundreds of dollars that "dodgy " breeders charge. I would ask myself if they want a lot more for "papers" they are NOT a REGISTERED breeder. Example I have seen "dodgy breeders" waive the parents papers in front of unsuspecting buyers telling them it is $300 if you want papers , THESES BREEEDERS ARE NOT REGISTEREd , it is a con as most only want pets and papers they think are not needed. WRONG. Papers are PROOF that your puppy is a PUREBRED and the only proof. To Check it the breeder is truley a registered breeder Ask them their Name and Kennel Prefix and ring the states controlling body EG Dogs NSW, Dogs Vic, Dogs SA and make sure they ARE registered and CURRENT breeders. Main Register puppies most breeders will ask more money for than a LImited Register, The limited it pet only register , whereas the Main (without xclusions like Dogs vic has) will enable you to show and breed usually. Sorry OP but i think you have been ripped off by a dodgy breeder who know just what to say Hope this helps Cheers Julie
  13. I do not let anyone see the puppies until 8 weeks of age reasons being # Diseases and germs are my first priority # It is not a day for the bored family to have something to do (and believe me their is many who do that) # Security reasons # I am usually far too busy with the puppies and others i have # They havent had their health checks until 6 weeks so pointless coming before if something is wrong with their chosen puppy # At 8 weeks if they like the puppy and all is well they can leave with it # Why put the bitches through so much stress? would you like strangers coming in picking up your babies all the time with no say in it? # and the amount of people who dont hold appointments even when collecting a puppy geez if they are going to be late RING and let me know , so i would hate for that to happen consistantly I can understand peoples urgency and impatietance but my dogs and puppies are my number 1 priority. I have nothing to hide buyers are quite free to come over when the puppy is ready to go and meet everyone i have and see the kennels etc. I do have close friends and family over all the time (and they know the rules of the house when i have puppies) so socialization isnt a problem.
  14. Glad i havent upset anyone They do need training and they will do your head in hehehehe I have trained 2 to trials level , just never bothered for their titles, the first one was hard to do until i learnt to read them, the second i had a better understanding , was much more at ease , learnt not to stress so much. I have sold puppies to Staffies owners and they have all told me they are nothing like they expected , not even similar and cant be compared, i dont know i have never owned a staffie just one lab , a JRT and bullies , now the Bordeauxs. Best thing is if you can go and visit a breeder or a local dog show (and hope some are entered) talk to the owners ask all the questions you want you will be suprised how bull terrier owners love nothing more than to talk about their dogs. We are lovable like our dogs Cheers Julie
  15. Oh and BTW the allowable colours are and none of them are "rare" or worth any more money White with or without markings brindle with or with out markings and all different shades EG Red brindle , black brindle. silver brindle etc black with or with out markings Tri colour red/white/black Red with or with out markings blue and liver are highly undesirable and i have never seen them lol
  16. OK so now i am going to burst your bubble and probably upset a few people lol Bull Terriers are a GREAT dog BUT caution around other dogs is a must. You must remember that they will get in a fight with another dog if pushed , they dont start them they finish them !! The problem is they are a strong breed , if 2 dogs of another breed have a fight then they dont do much harm. The reason i am telling you this is through experience and the phone calls i get from distraught owners that have had their dogs fight and now one has to be rehomed (and for some reason it is always the bull terrier that gets blamed !!!!!) The Bull Terrier is a very smart breed but extremely stubborn, lots of patience and training and the right attitude is needed. I would also advise they are an inside dog also, they like to be part of the family and where all the action happens, curling up on the lounge or cremating themselves in front of the heater in winter. If you are prepared to put in the hard yards and follow advice on things like (never leave them with another dog or pet with out supervision, always be the alpha person yourself and you family etc ) then i wouldnt say no. They give so much love , and affection, are fantastic with people young and old , they give you hours of laughter with their silly little quirky things they do, they become part of the family They really are the best but are not a breed for everyone and every situation Cheers Julie
  17. Hi Meryl I use wombaroo , i have had a problem b4 with Biolac and had puppies with upset tummies, it didnt have sedimanet but was lumpy. Is there anyone close by who can lend you something else until Tuesday and then look in to it. I would personally be taking them off straight away if you can. How old are they? are they too young to wean? Cheers Julie
  18. I have a Nikon Coolpix for my budget go anywhere sit in my pocket camera BUT since gaining my Nikon D60 with twin VR lens kit i hardly use it anymore. The DSLR is definately the way to go especialy when shooting dog pictures, mainly due to the dog movement factor i used to always miss the shots and as a very impatiant peson dont like waiting for cameras to catch up lol.
  19. Keep them seperated until the foster leaves, Bull terrier in my experience do not like to have other dogs around, they love only to be the only child, now the problem with having another dog/cat etc is that they are renown to get jealous and little things can set them off. The biggest problem is that a bull terrier is much more powerful and quick than many dogs and injuries can occur and sometimes serious injurys. They are dominant shites. Play it safe and keep them apart. I would also recommend if you are not doing this already is enrol your bully in to a GOOD obedience school, where your bully will learn patience with other dogs. A Bull Terrier is great with people, young and old, they just dont do well with other furry creatures Cheers
  20. They ultrasound the kidneys. This must be done by a very competant vet, not all vets have ultrasounds machines and some of those who do wouldnt have a clue how to use it ;) Most breeders test for most things at the same time and it all gets built in to the price. UPC, patella, baer if it hasnt already been done, heart QLD and NSW breeders i am sure use thier universitys Maybe someone in NSW could point you in the right direction of whom to use Cheers Julie
  21. 1. What is my relationship with the breed? (ie breeder, first time owner etc) I Co -Own two of them Father /Daughter 2. Where and why was the breed first developed? History (short outline) (TAKEN FROM S.A.D.B French Site) The Mastiff of Bordeaux east one of the French dogs oldest, probable descendant of Alans and, in particular, the alan vautre of which Gaston Phébus (or Fébus) Count de said Foix, in XIVème century, in its Book of Hunting, that it “holds more extremely his bite than would not make three greyhounds”. The word “mastiff” appears at the end of XIVème century. In the middle of the XIXème century, these old mastiffs were hardly famous but in Aquitaine. One used them with hunting for the big game (wild boar), with the engagements (often codified), with the guard of the houses and the cattle, with the service of the butchers. In 1863 place in Paris had, with the Zoological gardens, the 1st French canine exposure. The mastiffs of Bordeaux appeared under their current name. There were various types: Toulouse type, Parisian type, type of Bordeaux, at the origin of the current mastiff. The race which had suffered much during the two world wars, at the point to be threatened of extinction after the war of 1939-1945, took again its rise in the years 1960. 1st standard (character of truths mastiffs) in Pierre MÉGNIN, the Mastiff of Bordeaux, 1896. 2nd standard in J. KUNSTLER, Étude criticizes Mastiff of Bordeaux, 1910. 3rd standard by Raymond TRIQUET, with the collaboration of the Veterinary surgeon Maurice LUQUET, 1971. 4th standard reformulated according to the model of Jerusalem (F.C.I.) per Raymond TRIQUET with the collaboration of Philippe SÉROUIL, President, and of the Committee of the Company of the Amateurs of Mastiff of Bordeaux, 1993 3. How common is it in Australia? National Registration statistics from 1995 to 2008 45 120 144 264 164 264 230 294 248 370 411 505 4. What is the average lifespan? approx 8-10 years 5. What is the general temperament/personality? Great . They are sweet and funny, but they can be dominant and firm training is needed. They are intelligent and pick up commands quite easily. They are protective of house and family. They need to be socialised from young. They love to play and love toys. 6. How much daily exercise is needed for the average adult? Some are fairly energetic and active others are lazy and need encouragement to excersise. They need to be excersised, not only for health but also for mental stimulation. 7. Is it a breed that a first time dog owner could easily cope with? I personally would not recommend for first timers, they are a dominant breed and do need firm handling. 8. Can solo dogs of this breed easily occupy themselves for long periods? Depends on the nature of the particular dog and the amount of quality time is put in by owners 9. How much grooming is required? Quick rush once a week to remove loose fur , keep nails trimmed, ears cleaned. 10. Is it too boisterous for very small children or for infirm people (unless the dog is well trained)? I wouldnt say they are , they tend to be a gentle giant 11. Are there any common hereditary problems a puppy buyer should be aware of? Definately like all breeds and cross breeds . The main area is hip and elbow dysplaysia, Make sure parents are hip scored and ask to see the results !!!!! . I have added a link on some great information for this breed i highly recommend that people interested in this breed read it carefully 12. When buying a puppy, what are the things you should ask of the breeder? (eg what health tests have been done (if applicable) and what is an acceptable result to those tests so the buyer has an idea of what the result should be) This link has valuable information http://www.dogueinfo.com/index.htm
  22. I went in and checked out the one at Gawler , looked around prices good BUT then spotted the puppies up the back sorry but I will NOT support any pet store that has puppies and kittens in them no matter what bargains they have.
  23. TO post what you have , sends alarm bells ringing straight away. You are scared of the dog and he is only a puppy!!!. These types of breeds like many other need controlled and firm owners. You say you have had agressive dogs as a child , dogs arent agressive in most cases it is the owners and if this puppy is picking up that you are not in control or have fear then things will get worse. I have seen this many times, owners past experiences or believing the media hype although they say they dont. I HIGHLY recommend you and your dog start obedience training ASAP at a GOOD school i can recommend one if you wish to PM me as i notice you are in SA. Whilst a good behaviourist is worth their weight in gold they are hard to come by, These problems need adressing immediately and to be constantly worked on daily, day in day out , not just for an hour by a proffessional. Cheers Julie
  24. Rabies shot? which country are you from? On Vaccinations i think you will find it depends on which BRAND of vaccinations you vet uses , to the number needed and the length between.
  25. What a great idea , have to go to bunning on the weekend
