  2. Hi, It depends where you live. Go to Geographic distribution. Paralysis tick distribution Good luck!
  3. Hi, My SIL is looking at buying a puppy. She is wondering if there is a good book or DVD explaining dog body language aimed at children. The kids have never owned a dog before and I know she wants to make sure they try to understand pack etiquette. Her four kids are 3 to 12 years, so a wide age range! Thanks.
  4. The only place, to my knowledge, to perform titre tests is in Perth. Therefore you need to factor in sample travel to Perth and of course xmas/new year close down. I had mine done early New Year and had the results within 4 days. Hope this helps!!
  5. Hi, My 3yo ACD has just thrown-up 8 hours after applying her fortnightly Advantix. While this does not happen all the time, it has now occurred enough times for me to think this is not a coincidence. Usual it happens 8-9 hours after application. I will obviously stop using it, but was wondering if anybody else has had a similar experience. Reading a previous post about using Frontline and the dog's reaction to just seeing the tube, made me think that it is something I need to look more closely into. We live in a high tick area so thought I was doing the right thing. We do, however, check both dogs morning and night so do not rely solely on the Advantix application. Any comments and suggestions welcome.
  6. Thanks, we got some psyllium husks today! How much should I give her? She weighs 20 kg. Would it be Ok to sprinkle over her dinner or should I soak and then mix it into her food?
  7. Well there was no movement this morning although she did strain trying. Vet put her under for an xray and discovered she was "chockers" to use his words. Thankfully no blockage but she was compacted. She has been "cleaned out" and we are picking her up this afternoon. She gets plenty of exercise as OH or I are home 24/7 so it is a constant run, swim or chase from sunrise to sunset. Being an ACD you can't keep her still. She is on a raw diet which includes oily fish, mince, vegetable mix every second day, yoghurt and bones. We will have to modify the number of bones as we think this may be the issue. We are also looking at psylium (sp) husks to increase her fibre content and also increasing her vegetables to every day. We will start slowly as we don't want the opposite affect. Funnily our lab, who has the same diet and lifestyle has absolutely no problems on this diet .
  8. Thanks! OH is just back and the Vet has kept her in overnight. He thinks it might be constipation as he gave her a thorough examination and could find nothing else. He did a rectal exmination and the stool was hard and crumbly. Will give her a supository and if no luck will give her an enema in the morning. Thank goodness for the credit card!!!
  9. OH is on the way to the Vet with our ACD, who has been acting really strangely for the past 3 hours. She appears to be in a lot of pain, will not sit still, panting and when we tried to lift her tail, for a tick check, let out a yelp. Her bark appears not as loud and is a higher pitch, if this makes sense. We didn't find a tick. It seemed to occur after her dinner, which she ate normally There has been no vomiting but we have not seen any bowel movement so not sure about diarrhea(sp) We are thinking maybe constipation or bowel blockage. Could be a tick but she isn't lethargic, just restless. Being married to a higher functioning hypochondriac, thankfully this also extends to the dogs so it was off to the Vet with the credit card in hand. Any ideas apprecaited Thanks
  10. My (then) 6 Month old ACD was diagnosed with OCD, after X Rays were taken. We initially gave her anti inflams, which didn't make much difference. We then had a course of cartrophen which worked really well. It wasn't until the third or fourth injection that we noticed a difference. It has been over 2 years and thankfully we have not had a reoccurence. She is very active and it has not slowed her down. We give her Sashas blend every day to help things along but thankfully an operation, for us, was not required. (PS One thing I didn't realised was that a GA would be needed for the Xrays. I suppose it should have been obvious but as with all GAs try to avoid them if at all possible. I'm not sure whether you can diagnose OCD without them ) Good Luck
  11. Hi, Both of our neighbours have a flea plague with their dogs at the moment. Both of my dogs have no problems. The only difference is that I put garlic in my dog's food at least every second day. I also use Advantix, instead of Frontline which the neighbours use. Hope this helps.
  12. Hi, We have two tennis ball obsessed dogs and this now explains their teeth. I had no idea. Does anybody know if the Planet Dog tennis balls are different to normal felt tennis balls? Also I can't seem to find a stockist in OZ that sells the complete Planet dog range. Has anybody used an overseas site that they can recommend? Is postage very expensive? Thanks
  13. My ACD was vaccinated for KC two weeks ago and now has developed KC. Is it normal for this to happen? If it is, why would you get them done if they are going to get KC from the inoculation? I got her titre tested for the others and it came up well above the immunity required. I must admit that I am seriously thinking of not getting her done for KC next year.
  14. Hi. Thanks for all the great replies! Funnily enough I found my reaction to my ACD, after the event, was very upsetting for her. She picked up on the negative response and even got to the point where she wouldn't eat. An example perhaps, of excluding her from the pack as being more severe in her mind than the chicken around the neck. That was one of the reasons I posted as I thought her reaction was extreme and was not sure whether she was still relating it to the chicken killing. I have just spent my holidays putting galvanised Dog Fence up around the pen. However, will this just frustrate her and should I also try relating the chickens to a form of punishment/negative stimulus when I am not around ie an electric fence /citronella collar? I don't want her to start barking at the chickens which she can no longer access and annoy the neighbours. By the way since the chicken around the neck she has shown no interest in the remaining ones. Whether it worked is yet to be proven.
  15. Sorry can't figure out how to post link, but it was in August 2004, under "Please Help, dog killing chickens" which I thought appropriate. I must admit I am confused. There will be times I am at work so she will be left unattended. Is this something which I can train out of her or should I just put up better barriers to stop her from getting to them? Or try both?
  16. Hi! Sorry have been off line for a couple of days. The only reason I thought the original punishmnet was OK was because I did a search on DOL and it was a suggested course of action. Trust me it was not something that I enjoyed. It was mentioned to leave the chicken on until it rotted off. That was not going to happen! I was in tears the whole time, thinking I was doing the right thing but not being happy about it . That was why I took it off after a couple of hours. Am now trying to think of ways to stop her getting to them. Was looking at installing the Innotek system around the pen, but from my DOL search there are also many mixed opinions about this. Would a physical barrier be better ie puppy/dog wire or use this Innotek system. The problem is that the other dog (Lab) is fine with chickens so she would be going in but the ACD would be getting sound/mild shocks if she goes close to the pen. Don't know whether this is good as one dog is then being treated differently to the other. So maybe the wire would be better. Help!!!! PS I live in country NSW. Thanks.
  17. That's the other thing, I think she got in through holes she made in the fencing. I think we may need to get re inforced wire that is impossible to penetrate. Unfortuately, up until this point we thought we didn't need it. This is the first dog I have owned so I am trying to do the right thing but I suppose it is like children, you learn from your mistakes. That is why I find reading this forum so helpful. Thanks
  18. Thanks. Have taken her off the harness and she is now happier. The problem is that she is usually so good around chickens. When she was a puppy we took her in to the pen and she would ignore them. Probably because of this we were lulled into a false sense of security. Now she is ignoring them. She is not consistent in her behaviour. Thought she may need to go to a behaviouralist to see if that will help. ;)
  19. Hi I have a 16 month ACD who killed a chicken yesterday We tied chicken around her neck but removed it after a few hours as she appeared to be very distressed. ( Didn't help me either) This morning she knows she is still in the bad books, as she will not look at me and all the body language is very submissive. (ears down etc) She won't even eat her breakfast and is hiding in the corner. I have put her car harness on, which she hates. How long should I continue ignoring her as I don't wan't to continue if she is gaining no value and can no long realise it is because of the dead chicken ;) . Thanks.
