Hi, I believe you can use a syringe, obtained from a chemist to get the mixture in. This is obviously minus the needle. Also because there are measurements on the tube of the syringe it will allow you to get a 50/50 mixture. There may be other ways but I believe this works.

Has Your Dog Ever Choked On A Raw Bone?
Daxilly replied to puppymum's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I also have never had a dog choke on a bone. However, my lab got a lamb spine stuck on her back teeth. A mad rush to the vet and they couldn't get it off. She needed a GA to have it removed. ;) Needless to say I don't give her lamb spines anymore! You must be sensible with what you give and try to monitor them during the consumption process as much as possible. -
Hi, Choice has just done a comparison of 63 pet insurance policies. If you don't subscribe you can buy the report for $13.95. I found it interesting, and may be worth buying the article to get what you need. www.choice.com.au ETA : Choice go for Bow Wow Meow as the cheapest Budget Cover but it appears while Pet Insurance premium is $35.00 more, Pet Insurance benefits are higher.

Hi, I get the impression that your OH doesn't want to do it! Is it because OH doesn't think it is the right time or does he want nature to take its course with no outside (euthanasia) intervention. If you could both come to an agreement then this will make the decision easier. Having opposing views does not make it simple. Find out why he doesn't think it is the right time, or no matter what quality of life your dog has, including pain, he would be opposed to it. It may be an ethical dillema on your OH part, in which case you will probably always disagree. You may then need to make a stand, without OH support. This will not be an easy thing. Good luck

Does anybody know what parts ACV to water should be used? Also is it best to use saline or boiled water? Thanks
-
Is that the Malaseb shampoo or is it a special ear cleaning solution? Thanks
-
Thanks Westiemum, that's what I was looking for! Do you need a prescription for TrizEDTA or can you get it online? Are you concerned that with using the Dermotic every few days it will cause a resistance over time? Luckypup has just started a thread on ACV as an ear cleaner so I will be interested to see what feedback she gets.

Hi, I realise that it is a difficult time for you. Imagine if you had lived a long and happy life and then your quality of life declined. If you were incontinent and could not enjoy the things you always had. Would you like to spend your last days like this, even if you were not in any pain? Unfortunately, you do not know what he wants! You must be his advocate and do what you think is in his best interest as somebody who has loved and cared for him. The Vet can look at his physical condition but you must see what is best for his overall happiness. Not being in pain is not the only criteria!

So should I use just the Dermotic without cleaning the ear first. I did notice that I had to wait at least half an hour before the ear would dry enough before I applied the Dermotic. Could the other stuff just be moistening the ear canal making the Dermotic useless? Thanks

I suspected the treats may be the problem! We got her as a rehome where she was on PAL. We have had her for 4 years so she has been on BARFish for about that long. Is it carbs, which cause the problem, or can diary also be an issue?

As she is a lab trying to keep her out of the water is almost impossible. We also have a river at the bottom of the garden, which doesn't help. She swims almost everyday in summer, less so in winter. I will be interested to see if the ears improve over the colder months. We have also just filled in our dam so she has less access to swimming now. Do they make ear plugs for dogs? Collodial silver, I assume can be obtained at a chemist? She shares a water bowl with an ACD so I assume that it will not be detrimental to any other dog. I will take her to the vet next week and see what other options we have. I may use a bull dog (lab) clip to pin those ears back to get some air flow through. I don't have this problem with my ACD, who has "stick up ears". :p Thanks

I try to keep it a BARFish diet. She eats chicken, beef and pork mince /bones including a vegetable/fruit slush. The slush has ACV included in the recipe. She has various kinds of fish and natural yoghurt. The yoghurt has joint guard as a preventative for HD. All preservative free. The only thing which may aggravate the problem could be the treats I use. They have various carbohydrates, including flour. I have been toying with the idea of changing to the treats made by one of the other DOLers so if you think this could be the problem, I will order the other ones. She also gets psyllium husk, for regularity, very occasionally.

Thanks, I thought the Dermotic was an antibiotic cream. Should I be giving her oral antibiotic tablets? Should I also be insisting on a swab to identify the type of yeast infection? I am also concerned that if I give too many broad spectrum antibiotic treatments she will built up an immunity and I will never be able to clear it up! Would the anti fungal treatments work in this case? Thanks

Hi, The Vet diagnosed my lab with a yeast ear infection and prescribed Opti-clean (?) to clean the ears as well as Dermotic to clear up the infection. I found the Opti clean made the ears look very red and sore so changed to Epi Otic. This also made the ears red and sore looking. I used 100% cotton wipes to clean the ears and tried to be as gentle as I could given that she wasn't being terribly co-operative. Now I have stopped her ears look much better and a nice pink colour. However, I suspect the infection is still there. I am planning on taking her back to the Vet for a check, however, could somebody recommend a mild ear cleaner to use. I was going to mix up some saline and canestan but thought I had better check. Is there something else which will be mild yet help the healing process. Thanks

Leo Ear Cleaner - Replacement
Daxilly replied to MolassesLass's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hi, My Lab has a yeast ear infection (vet diagnosed) which I am treating with epiotic ear cleaner and dermotic. The epiotic is too harsh and is causing redness and what looks like chaffing to the ear. Would Milo's be better as it will dry up the ear and not leave the ear wet like the epiotic? Because of the alcohol content would it sting badly and end up being counter productive? Could it cause more problems? Thanks -
Hi, I have a Lab and ACD and give them pork tails all the time. There isn't much fat and the bones are soft enough for the whole bone to be consumed. A friend with two shelties also feeds pork tails. The other white meat!

Thanks but after extensive elimination diets I have accepted that it isn't food allergy. I just found out the name today and found this one. Does anyone know or have experience with these? http://www.aussieotoscope.com.au/main/page...t_otoscope.html Couldn't see any at Clipper World poodle 3081. Anyway thanks for the feedback folks. Hi, Just bumping this as I am thinking about getting one. Any feedback appreciated! Thanks

Shar throws up when given a roo bone Not good, not good at all Hi, I wonder if it is a Lab thing as my Lab will eat anything (yeah, nothing unusual there I hear you say) but will throw up when given roo. I caught her heaving and then vomitting it up after feeding roo mince/bones. It is a shame because it is a good all round meat, with little fat.

Hi, I have the same problem with my adult lab. She sleeps outside, by choice, so am thinking I need something to heat her kennel. She has doonas and blankets galore, but sleeps on top of everything. Have tried putting blankets over her but she doesn't like it. Have looked at the Snugglesafe heating disc. I was also looking at a hot water bottle but wondered how safe it is?? She is not much of a chewer but you never know. Any ideas/suggestions welcome. Would a jacket work?? Thanks.

Annual Check Ups - How Much Much & What Done
Daxilly replied to JulesP's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hi, Just had my two done. This included 2 titre tests and kennel cough vaccination, nails clipped, anal glands checked and cleaned for 1 dog. Ears, eyes, lungs, heart, teeth etc checked. This cost a total of $325, which included cost of ointment for ear infection. They picked up a couple of things which need further attention so I am happy they did a good job. Cheers -
Look at Rodney's diet. Try to include chicken neck/wings and other raw meaty bones. You need to firm up the poo. The bones will also, when being excreted, pierce the sacs thus doing the emptying for you. Some dogs just have a problem so try to keep on top of it. Skidding is a sign that things are not right (I am assuming he gets wormed so this should not be the reason) Good luck

Hi, Had my two done yesterday. Diptheria and Parvo titre checked. Hepatitis will cost more as I believe it must be sent overseas for testing. It is sent to Vetpath in WA and cost $125 per dog. I live in country NSW. Results should be available by the end of the week. Hope this helps.

Hi, Just picked up a brochure on the Skudo. It is suppose to repel ticks and fleas using ultra-sonic impulses. It is inaudible to humans and animals but can be heard by ticks and fleas. Has anybody used it and what was it like? Thanks.

Flea/tick/worms/ Etc Chart (now Up)
Daxilly replied to WildatHeart's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Just an idea. Choose add reply. Bottom right has "choose file" option. Select file and then upload. Max size 200K It will then show up in the "Manage current attachments" area bottom left. Attach it into the text and this should work. There is a testing thread to see if it works. Hope this helps. ETA I tried an excel file and it didn't work, but a word file did. If it doesn't work for you try saving it as a word doc -
I know when I got mine done it was around $100 but that was only for distemper and parvo. The hep. testing needs to be sent overseas (USA or UK) for testing so that is probably where the additional cost comes in. This was a year ago so things may have changed, but I am about to get my two tested again so will let you know I decided not to get the hep done as I was told that hepatitis in dogs was uncommon and the logic was if the other results were OK then the hepatitis would be too. My two do not board or have much contact with other dogs, so I decided it was worth the risk. I suppose it is all about managing the risk and deciding if the benefits outweigh the cost. Cheers
