HI, My ACD injured her rear leg and the Vet has prescribed Previcox 227. She is taking half a tablet and the vet said to administer it for as long as needed. My question is how long is that? We are on day two and she is alot better. The problem is how do I know if the NSAID is just masking the pain and as soon as I stop she will be in pain again. If she continues to improve as much as she has I wouldn't be giving her any more as I am aware of the side effects of these type of drugs. However, two days, to me, doesn't seem long enough or am I wrong? (I haven't used this drug before) Thanks

Thanks everyone. Deep down I knew I would have to get it taken out. She doesn't need any other procedures as her teeth are perfect apart from the broken tooth. If she did that would probably have made the decision easier. She hates the vet and she needs to be carried in as she digs her heels in as soon as she realises where she is: usually in the carpark. I hate her having a GA as I always think the worst. All surgery is risky, but this needs to be done. Thanks again.

My 7 yo ACD has just broken off one of her pre-molars at the root. No idea how she did it, just saw blood on her ball and investigated why. Vet said it will need a GA to get the root out. She also said that we can leave it but there is the possibility of problems later on. The tooth is broken below the gum line, so no problems eating etc. She doesn't appear to be in pain. Not sure which way to go. Would prefer to avoid surgery, but don't want more complications later on. Advice needed. Thanks

My 7yo lab has just started developing limpomas. I panicked when I found it as well. Vet said if they are smooth and a uniform shape probably nothing to worry about. As this is the first best to take her to the vet. They will aspirate it and check for cancer cells. If it is in her legpit it could be something serious. I assume dogs also have lymph glands there as humans do, but chances are it will be OK. Good Luck!

Is there anything for mild pain relief in dogs? Something like Panadol for canines. Our ACD hurt herself and while it was not bad enough for the vet, I did notice that she did have a restless night. Something to allow her pain relief so the muscle could heal overnight. Rimadyl and Tramadol probably too strong. Is it better just to let nature take its course as she slept most of the next day and was fine 24 hours after the injury? Thanks

How's your wombat situation??? We put dog wire around our house boundary (3 acres) and the wombats dug ACD size holes underneath it. Dog wire has a bigger gauge than chicken wire and the wombats destroyed it in places. Our neighbours put reo down and the wombats still dug underneath. By all means put up chicken wire as it will slow them down, but put in one of those ping string fences, the one with the collar. Alot safer than getting shot if they escape and they learn very quickly to stay away from the fence.

My pet food supplier has horse necks so they are very big, probably about 2 feet long. If you didn't know you would think that they were beef. I know when he was contemplating stocking it even he had to think twice. I know it made it easier because it didn't look like horse.

Prompted by a news article about a butcher in WA being threatened for selling horse meat for human consumption, would you feed your dog raw horse meat? I have also just finished reading the Nature's Gift web site and they are very anti horse meat. They make a point of never using it, emphasising that it is almost as a moral issue. My pet food supplier has just started stocking horse meat. It is very lean and looks like a nice piece of meat. While I have no issues with the concept of feeding raw meat, I am having problems with the concept of horse meat. Not so much my dogs eating it but me having to touch it. I am having a food aversion on my dogs' behalf. I know lots of countries eat horse as part of their diets, but I am still not comfortable with the idea. What makes lamb necks or kangaroo tails OK but horse unsettling? Interested in people's opinions.

I was always under the impression that dogs required their own space. Somewhere to feel secure. If just being in the house will achieve this, I am happy to let her stay un-crated. She came in last night and I didn't hear a peep from her till I got up. Considering this is the first time she has slept inside at night, I was pleased. This whole renovation experience has been interesting. Both dogs, especially the ACD, are having a great time. Of course, both must be involved with everything that is going on, which requires 100% supervision anytime they are outside. The builders are turning up at 7am so feeding, playing etc is in the dark, with minus temperatures. I am getting nothing done apart from supervising them. I looked out the window today to see the ACD putting her ball on top of the reo of the foundations. We have the concrete truck arriving tomorrow. My OH jokingly said that this may be an ideal way of getting rid of the dogs. When people ask where they are, we can honestly say that they are in the house. Looking forward to the next 4 months being over.

I have searched the forum but can only find info on crate training puppies and younger dogs. My 7yo lab sleeps outside in a kennel. Due to a major house renovation she will need to sleep inside at night for at least the next 4 months. She is fully house trained and is well behaved when left alone. Is it realistic to expect her to use the crate without any previous experience. She loves her kennel and is very food motivated. I have looked at various crates and have found the one I like. It will cost about $250 so before I purchase it, is it likely I will be able to train her to sleep in it at night. As she gets older I was planning on having her sleep inside, especially during winter, so the crate can be used at other times. At 7 years old is it too late to train her? Thanks

The scissor style seems just what I am looking for. I think the guillotine ones will squeeze the nail too much. If I can get a brand name that would be great. Thanks

I looked at the dremel but I would think that it would be really difficult to keep her still long enough to use it. I need something really sharp as she only has the patience to get one or two done at a time. Bit like taking off a bandaid, the quicker the better. The nail clipper I have at the moment has gone blunt really quickly and will not even make a dent on her nails. Thanks

Hi, Looking for recommendations for good nail clippers. Thanks

Could it be a mild case of kennel cough?? Does it only happen certain times of the day ie first thing in the morning or just after waking up?

Introducing Roo Meat And She Vomits...
Daxilly replied to Skruffy n Flea's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My labrador always vomits after eating roo, not matter how small an amount. She loves it but it doesn't love her!! -
Hi, We have two ball loving dogs. Their teeth were starting to wear down. I read in DOL that the tennis balls, with the fuzzy outer cover, acted like sand paper and had the potential to wear down the teeth. I switched to Planet Dog balls and they have not got any worse since. If you are using tennis balls look for something softer and less abrasive. Good Luck

I also reduced the amount of carbs I was feeding my lab, as well.

My lab had yeasty ears and I found the only thing to keep it under control was Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV). Firstly, before putting anything down the ear, the ear drum is not perforated. This applies to any ear cleaning solution. Then I mixed ACV/saline (50/50) solution in a squeeze bottle. Squeeze it down the ear and massage. I leave it for about 2 minutes and then wipe it out with cotton wool. I keep a close eye on her ears and wipe them out as I think they need it. Sometimes I will just wet a cotton ball and wipe the ear as far as I can get with my fingers. If you do a search there is a bit about ear cleaners. DOL was where I got this solution from. Good Luck PS Make sure the ACV has the "Mother" in it. You can get it from Health Food stores. Lasts for a while.

The Nowra Vet Hospital, Kinghorne Street, does titre testing. It also has the capability to administer chemo should the need arise. I think they are the only one in the area to be able to do that. They are a 24 hour on call Vet, although it isn't cheap. They are also open 7 days a week. I have been happy with their service, although have mostly used them for routine matters.

Leo Ear Cleaner - Replacement
Daxilly replied to MolassesLass's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Any feedback good or otherwise on Milo's Ear Cleaner Thanks -
I have checked with my vet and she said that tooth loss happens. Provided the socket looks clean and she doesn't appear in pain, it should heal over. Obviously, if the wound starts to look infected then bring her in. Cheers

Hi, I have just noticed my 5 year old ACD has lost a lower incisor. It has happened today but there is no blood and it appears as though the root has gone as well. I am assuming this is not normal. Is it something I should be worried about or does this happen occasionally. Her teeth are perfect with no build up. I know humans lose teeth due to gum disease but her gums look healthy. She has just had a battle with an empty plastic flower pot so I will check it isn't sticking out of that. TIA

When my ACD first got KC, I took her to the Vet because I thought, as a new dog owner, that was what was required. They gave her antibiotics, even though, to my untrained eye, she didn't seem that bad. The next time I phoned and was told to bring her in as she would need antibiotics. As somebody who believes in non antibiotic intervention, unless absolutely needed, I let her ride out the cough. Now I don't take her to the vets if she gets KC. She has KC at the moment, even though she gets vaccinated yearly. The transmission of the virus has me stumped! We live in a remote farm area, she never sees other dogs, yet somehow manages to get KC. I thought it was transmitted via water droplets, similar to human colds. Unless some of the contractors, who come onto the property, have a dog with KC and they transfer it to her, I can't see how she gets it. Would foxes get it? We have lots of those. Does anybody know the life span of the virus outside the body? Could it survive on shoes or hands for more than an hour? Thanks

Hi, I also only give it once a day. I mix it into some natural yoghurt. My two love it and will remind me when its "medicine time"
