  1. not that I have seen. I find most owners incredibly clueless as to their dogs mental state lol, maybe people are more clued in, in Aus? lol. as for not suddenly flipping, not true at all, I have been working in a kennel for 4 years, anxiety is not common beyond the first day or 2(in our kennel, I know nothing about how dog act in normal kennels, which around here are NOTHING like you described), but the serious anxiety issues we have dealth with have ALWAYS come later, and only when the dog is staying for a long time, like the dog is having fun, but wants to go home now, its been long enough, I have only seen it twice and they were both extended stays. I don't think its silly if the dog has anxiety issues or the trial is at least 2 days, if the dog isn't given a CHANCE to settle, in then what's the point? the thing is around here all the trials that people have done have literally been 1 night, like drop off right before we close and pick up as soon as we open the next morning, this will tell them nothing because the dog never had a chance to settle in. I often reccomend however for people who are nervous that they bring their dog for several daycare days before boarding, even several daytime stays are more helpful to gage the dogs mental state then throwing the dog in a place he's never seen before surrounded by strangers to sleep, then all of a sudden picked up and sent home by totally new strangers the following morning, I would be surprised if the dog WASN'T stressed out after that! well sure, everything takes getting used too, but a 1 night or 1 day trial doesn't tell you much, they often take more then 8 hours to get accustomed to the environment. that's what a tour is for..... just today I spent 30 minutes talking on the phone with a lady, walking through all her concerns with her, then invited for a tour any time, I love giving people tours and explaining everything in detail.
  2. normal kennel = dogs in kennel runs full stay except for individual exercise if requested(often for extra charge) Social Kennel = dogs have own individual kennel runs but participate in doggy daycare all day. some kennel offer this as an option for an extra charge, but "standard" is without the daycare. in a social kennel daycare with boarding IS standard. cage free = no kennels or runs, dogs are just all mixed together full time. I have seen this a few times, only after the dog has been at the kennel for several days..considering most trials are only 1 day or night, I still don't see the point lol, we had a dog this happened with, the dog ripped the guillotine door out of the wall, and ripped the fencing on the outside run and got his head stuck..this was a full week into the dogs stay, AND he had stayed before(for several weeks) without problem, because we could not get anyone to collect the dog, we pretty much had to rig up a padded room for the dog. in another case it wasn't our kennel, but a dog staying at a vet kennel, the vet clinic transferred the dog to us because he was hurting himself..but again it didn't start till a few days into his stay(it wasn't anxiety, the dog just desperately needed more exercise then a regular kennel could provide, the dog was great with us). if the dog has severe anxiety issue, I totally see the point, to see if the dog can even handle it, but not for a normal dog unless the trial is more then 1 night.
  3. as a comment on the greyhound...TBH it looks more normal then other AKC show type grey's I have seen, even in that pic. it looks a little odd(in both that pic and the win pic) but I have seen far stranger looking AKC greys lol, usually huge barrel chests, crazy long necks, with miniature heads..they often look like someone took a bunch of different size parts and glued them together on one dog, that dog at least looks semi proportionate lol
  4. sorry should maybe clarify, the trials at the kennel I work at have nothing to do with seeing if they get along with other dogs, a social kennel is a different type of environment, some dogs fare much better in it, but some its stresses out more, but most dogs is freaks out at first, and once they are more comfortable they love it, hence bringing them for trials beforehand, that way they have already acclimatized to the environment by the time they stay for boarding. I don't see the point if they are to be kept single because it doesn't change anything, there nothing to really get more comfortable with.
  5. up to you, I work in a kennel and we get lots of people who trial , but its primarily because we are a social kennel , so they come to daycare several times before the boarding stay to make sure their dog is comfortable with the social setting. I don't think it would make any difference if its just a regular kennel though. I have had the odd person do a trial when they want their dog to be a single(separate from other dogs) but that just strikes me as silly!
  6. New York doesn't have BSL, just one of the many breeds that did not make it on that particular site, nothing more, nothing less. here was the BOB Am staff winner
  7. so sorry that happened! I never ever open windows enough for my dogs to be able to get out of them,I don't think any would try, they refuse to even exit an open door of my car unless its the rear side passenger door and they are expressly invited(they wont exit any other door invited or not) but I am paranoid and don't risk it. my dogs do ride loose in the back of my car though, restraining is simply not an option due to the size of my car and the number of dogs(not enough spots to strap in and not enough room for crates)
  8. my guys vary Happy, Misty, Rusty and Gypsy eat home prepared raw at home, and a grain free bison kibble for meals that they eat when at work with me Gem eats Orijen mixed with Raw at home, and plain Orijen for meals at work. Baby dog was raised on raw, but now has no many allergies that I don't feel comfortable feeding raw due to the very limited things she can eat. fish is the ONLY meat source she can eat in any form(raw, cooked, kibbled etc.. and not just the protein either, chicken fat is just as bad as chicken) she cant tolerate any grains whatsoever, and she can only tolerate a few veggies...this severely limits my options for feeding her raw and her getting everything she needs from it. to further limit her kibble options, she is deathly allergic to shellfish, and many of the supplements added to kibbles are derived from shellfish. ya, she eats a specific kibble mixed with the canned version of it lol
  9. I think my house smells worse from my other pets then from my dogs...the rabbits are the worst, followed by the hamster, but keeping the cages clean keeps the smell down pretty well. the only other smell is when its humid the gerbil's bedding gets damp and damp bedding smell's awful. we clean everything with Vinegar in any case..I keeps birds so most scented things are out of the question.
  10. I said "other" simply because I have 6 dogs that sleep in my room and in different spots lol Rusty-crate(he cant be loose unsupervised with my other dogs) Happy-her own bed(her choice) Misty-her own bed(she pee's herself in her sleep, she isn't allowed on my bed lol) Baby-her own bed in the summer, my bed in the winter(her bed is too cold in the winter) Gem and Gyp-on my bed, but they would prefer their own. my dogs beds are Kuranda's, Gem and Gyp are from my local shelter which uses Kuranda's in the kennels so they came to me liking them. Misty and Baby have a Kuranda bunk bed and Gem and Gyp keep kicking them off! if I had the space I would add a second bunk bed for Gem and Gyp. my mom says I should downgrade MY bed from a queen to a double, so I can fit a second bunk bed..after all if they all have their own beds, what do I need a queen for?
  11. both excellent, but the price is a little unreal lol, unless your feeding a Chi, I cant see feeding either of those foods exclusively, and I am willing to pay quite a lot for dog food. K9 natural where I live is $239 a box, and Ziwi peak is $30 for a 1 lb bag , I am willing to pay over $100 for good dog food, but $200? I don't think so!
  12. possibly they are presuming that because it isn't lethal white there cant be anything wrong, but lethal white or not, lack of pigment inside the ears can still cause deafness lol
  13. SOLID white is pretty rare. lack of pigment inside the ear can cause deafness, so generally white ears are a risk(inside the ear, white on top but pigmented inside is fine) white with a few patterns spots is common and perfectly acceptable(well not in the show ring, but that's for a BS reason)
  14. well I have a 12 year old sport X working bred Border Collie who has always been very mature, and I have a 10 year old all working line Border Collie who is not even remotely mature lol, don't get me wrong, she can be serious and she can work(and she LIVES to work) but she very much has a puppy brain and gets over exited pretty easy lol, she is very goofy when she works too, she gets things done, but the whole time she does things she has a huge grin on her face and she's kinda bouncy about it lol
