We have to tackle a perforated ear drum and middle ear infection before I look seriously at this. Poor boy........has had balance issues for a while and we thought it was Vestibular Disease but wasn't improving so he was sedated today and the vet is shocked by the condition of his ear. No pain, no discharge, no smell but now its a matter of what course of antibiotics can be used that wont have an adverse effect on his renal system.

Hi Bailey, my 14.5yo ESS had some elevated renal results in a recent blood test and although not at alarming levels, I am going to look into changing his diet. I would love some ideas and recommendations from anyone who has had good results with a particular diet. Thanks in advance Liz

Hi I am looking for recommendations for non-slip socks/shoes that I can use indoors for my seniors. I have used the basic sock with the rubberised tread but they come off all the time. My house has floorboards throughout the house and the oldies are starting to struggle a bit with traction. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Thanks for your concern but she has been in the care of the same vet for 9 years who actually suggested looking into the brace.

I know Helen Nicolson, the canine physio, either stocks or can get braces. Maybe somebody at ARH can order them as well. They do a lot of orthopaedics work there. Thanks. Can you give me more details in relation to where these people are based please? Cheers

Thanks for your reply persephone. Sorry! I neglected to say in my original post that my dogs have a BARF diet and there is very little waste, which is a huge bonus as he practically poops pebbles. It makes pick up a hell of a lot easier!

Hi all My very fit and very healthy 13yo ESS has over the last few months displayed lack of bowel control on numerous occasions and although the vet has found nothing medically wrong, she has put it down to an age related anal sphincter issue. Although it is happening on a more regular basis, it is not a huge issue for me but seems to upset him quite badly so I'd be very open to hear of how anyone else has handled this situation. In the last six months he has gone from emptying out where he thinks no-one can see him and being very private to a case now where he has gone when he is asleep and then rushed outside emptying on the way!! He has never had any medical issues and is strong in the rear end. We walk everyday, he swims and still chases a ball. Love to hear of your thoughts and experiences. Liz

Hi all Just doing a bit more research into hot spots today and I read a couple of people have suggested the powder spray. Has anyone else used this on hot spots and if so, what were the results? Thanks

Hi all I have an unusual problem and am hoping that some light can be shed on it for me. My 10yo ESS bitch has been an adhoc user of Pred over her lifetime for skin issues and it also helps in the relief of her arthritis. However, the last time I put her on it, she was incontinent for the whole six nights she was taking it. I spoke to her vet today and she told me that Pred shouldn't have any effect on sleeping patterns nor should it cause any form of incontinence. She stopped being incontinent the night after she completed the course. I am aware that Pred does cause dogs to comsume more water but this doesn't seem to be the case with Cleo. Has anyone has this problem or come up with any reason this would be happening? Looking forward to your comments. Liz

Thanks everyone for your help to solve our flea problem. It seems like Comfortis is the one mostly recommended, so I will give it a try. Thanks again.

Hi all Unfortunately this is the first tick season in SEQ where I haven't used Proban on my dogs but my problem has now become FLEAS not TICKS!! I now use Preventic Collars in tick season and alternate that with the use of Advantix but both my dogs, who are 10 and 11, have got fleas for the first time in their lives. Can anyone offer my any suggestions as to why this is could be happening? Can Advantix just not work on some dogs?? I am generally quite knowledgable when it comes to the health and well being of my dogs but this has got me stumped. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all Can anyone tell me if there is a "human" or over the counter version of the popular Panalog Ointment please? Having two ESS I like to have it on hand but at nearly $40 a tube, I find it a little excessive. Any thoughts/suggestions most welcome. Liz and the springers

Hi again and thanks for all your advice. I'll probably give it all a go as its critical for her ears to dry out totally. Hey springdog........Cleo has a pseudomonas bacterial infection that her vet calls the "superbug" and it's resistant to most antibiotics. How I wish a change of diet would fix it!!! Liz

Thanks for that. I do use metho as an ear cleaner but need something that I can put into the ear canal as well.

Hi all I have an ESS with ongoing ear problems and it doesn't help living in Brisbane in the humidity. There is very little I can do to keep her ears dry all the time, and she is a regular swimmer, but I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to what I can use to dry out the ear canals completely. There are many products on the market and things like EpiOtic etc just dont do the job. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Liz and the springers

Hi Can anyone give me some information on where I can buy a double lead. (walking two dogs). I have seen lots of places where you can purchase a lead coupler but when walking a male and female it just doesn't work too well as my boy is always stopping to pee!!! Ideally, I am looking for two full length leads with one handle. Any suggestions?? Liz and the springers

Hormonal Issues With A Spayed Bitch?
baileyb replied to baileyb's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I'm grasping at straws here, so any explanation would be great!! Its just the timing that got me thinking more than anything. She had also been alot more interested in Bailey during the last week or so by initiating all the play. -
Hi all My 6yo spayed bitch had three unprovoked attacks on my 7yo dog just before Xmas last year. Life quickly got back to normal and although my dog was distressed at first they are buddies again Today she has done the same thing and attacked him for no reason. It it possible that she has hormonal problems even though she is spayed and if so, can this be addressed. The only reason I am saying this is the 6 months between episodes. I may be way off course here but is the only feasible explanation that I have as they are the greatest of friends the rest of the time. Please help! Liz

This has nothing to do with retrieving trials. It is in a "sit stay" in obedience and he shuffles but does not break from the stay position.

Thanks for the replies guys. Its really interesting to read two totally different replies as to why this is could be happening and each of them would apply to any number of dogs but in this case I think dogdude has hit the nail on the head as far as my boy is concerned. For quite a while he was sitting at attention eyeballing me, which would cause him to bark. Now after heaps of work he spends he stays sticky beaking at whatever is going on around the ground and not having a care in the world. I always though distractions were great but I think he is now forgetting what he is meant to be doing. Anyway, its back to the drawing board for me. I need to find the happy medium here, I think. Relaxed and focussed, mmmm!!! Thanks again for your help.
