Ash this bitch is BISS CH Giant Steps Front Page News. I had the pleasure of seeing her go BISS at the Great Dane Club of America National Specialty in 1996 at Fontana Wisconsin. She is a lovely type of bitch beautiful mover although her markings are not perfect. She is the product of colour cross breeding. Fawn X Harle. She is the type of bitch who could be any colour and still look beautiful.

Depends what part of the country you are visiting. I found the Danes on the West Coast were a lot finer that what I personally would like. Danes in the midwest were wonderful Very strong esp in Harles and Fawns. None of the round bone you often see in harles here. Lovely broad flat bone. Dogs of good size. Sure there was the odd fine one but the majority were of normal size. The US is such a big place. I found that the styles of Danes did vary from West to East. I do feel the general quality has slipped a few notches over the last few years. Very hard to find anyone who line breeds these days. Dogs are such a mish mash of pedigrees.

Having visted the USA and been to a National specialty with over 700 dogs I can say I saw fine dogs, coarse dogs, average size dogs and small dogs. Also saw some very big dogs. I agree that there are some winners that are on the fine side but in the midwest where the breed is very strong I would not call them fine at all. They have a reasonable large gene pool over there and there is a fair bit of variation in styles of Danes.

American Danes are no bigger than most Australian / English Danes. European Danes are probably not as tall but tend to be heavier in body and head. We have a US imported bitch. Same size as the Aussie bitches here.

Our Sheltie lives quite happily with eight Great Danes. He was not raised with them arriving here as an adult for my daughter to show. He has settled in here very well. Brady can be vocal. Especially around feed time when I am organising the dogs dinners. They all get pretty keen when they know food is coming. He also gets vocal if the kids are outside playing and he is locked in the house. He demands to play too! ETA: Danes are not an overly energetic or rough breed. They are placid and like to sleep a lot. I find Brady is more of a boss here than the Danes are. He does have a bit of a habit of rounding the Danes up when they are coming in and out of the house LOL My older Dane bitch has taken to Brady and I am sure she thinks he is one of her pups. They both sleep in my daughters room and hang together during the day.

We have always fed our Danes from a raised position. My mother bred and was involved in Danes from the early 70's and also did this. I mainly feed this way for comfort reasons. I find a good height is about chair height. The jury is out on whether it reduces bloat or not. Danes are a great breed but not for everyone. If you are considering getting one. Do your homework. There are many pro's and cons regarding owning this breed. I find that Danes are a far more emotionaly "needy" breed than other dog breeds we have owned. They are very much a people dog and do not do well being confined to a yard without constant companionship. Danes are a breed that love to be in your face :-)

va·le2 (vā'lē, wä'lā) interj. Used to express leave-taking or farewell. n. A farewell. [Latin valē, sing. imperative of valēre, to be strong or well.]

I would never make my dogs do anything they were not happy doing nor would I be cruel to them. Kind of defeats the purpose of having an outgoing happy dog in the show ring. That it what I aim for.
-
It seems to train them to naturally stack that way. I walk Perri into her front and often only have to adjust one rear leg into position. Bait her and she should then start to wag her tail and watch the food. She stands still in the ring much longer as she knows she will get a reward for standing still. It really just teaches them not to move about once posed. Hey PF what will we do if next they deem bling leads as cruel ? Am I messing with my stud dogs mind if I show him on a bling lead with pink beads? Shame on me
-
ellz my feet are already destroyed agree with all of the above. Even slicker brushes in the wrong hands are way more cruel than the stackers. I would not use stackers on a dog who was fearful of them. They are not for all dogs but are fabulous for those who do work well on them. I don't do anymore than 5-10 minutes a couple of times a week on them. Always rewarded with treats and always praised and played with after training. Perri enjoys her "up" time. I wish I could take them in the show ring with me
-
I have been using the stackers on my fidget girl. She LOVES getting up on them. As you can see by her tail it is not cruel. She wags ten to the dozen! Lots of treats. I tell her to touch and she puts her front feet on and I lift her back legs up.

Please check with the vet re using LOMOTIL.!! There are certain conditions in which it should not be used...as it may cause serious harm. For a case of simple diarrhoea. yes it can stop it..... by slowing the muscle contractions. It does NOT kill the bug causing it, or fix an enzyme problem, or cure a food intolerance. It is a temporary 'fix'....and your girl needs a complete 'cure'. I agree, I would not give her any other meds until you get to the bottom of what is causing it. With the pumpkin peel it cut into wedges and steam it.

Good idea PF any recs on the offal type? I can get access to pleny of liver etc but worry about how rich it is.

My diet with my guys has pretty much been premium dry food, chicken mince occasional chook frames bones etc. One of my young girls who is 14 mo has decided she will NOT eat the dry food anymore. Hence I have been filling her up on chicken necks and mince. I have now decided I will totally feed her raw and see if she eats better and puts on more condition. I have ordered a box of chicken necks, lamb brisket, have a freezer full of chicken meat. What else do you raw feeders add to the mix? I was thinking yogurt as we usually use this with the dry food anyway. Any other ideas? She has finished her main growing. Just needs to fill out a bit more.

It could be Giardia as well. My Danes all got chronic runs on Bonnie. I use Euk and my dogs have good sized (not huge) well formed poops. If I have ever had a dog with the runs I have used Lomatil with success. I am not keen on feeding Dane pups rice. Rice is VERY high in phosphorous. Can put out the balance of whatever food she is keeping in and could cause an onset of HOD or other growth problems. I would take the advice of settrlvr and use Pumpkin. I have heard of Danes also getting colitis which causes constant diarrhea so this also could be discussed with vet. Good luck I hope you can get to the bottom of this as it has been going on a very long time.

Can A Dog Get Kennel Cough Despite Being Vaccinated?
nabs replied to LoremIpsum's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Sure can. The vaccination only covers a few strains and there are literally hundreds of strains of the virus. Often though a vaccinated dog will not get it as bad as an unvac one. ETA unless there is a secondary infection or the dog is very unwell then the vet is not needed. Plus you will just spread it around at the clinic. Be prepared for at least a week of coughing. The honey should help. Also some vit C powder and some zinc tablets. -
Pad aid is a product from NZ and is no longer available in Aust. I tried for months to get it. No go I am afraid

We feed chicken mince, necks etc. Lamb flaps too. We get ours from Canine Country up here and are happy with the quality of the meat. -
Advance = Eukanuba Or Royal Canin?

I have fed all premium foods to many dogs over the years. We found Euk the best by far. For Great Danes and the Sheltie.
