oh thank u so much saxonpup is it actually illegal to keep a dog even if youre looking for the owner? something is in the back of my memory...is it not something akin to stealing to keep it on your premises> i know that the pound is the obvious option but both my friend and i would be horrified if our actions led this dog to being pts doesnt bear thinking ill just hope the owner can be found tomorrow really goes to show that collars and tags are a must couldve been home safely by now if that were the case Yes, technically the person who found the dog cannot keep it or anyone else while 'actively trying to find it's owner'. Because there are many variations to 'actively'. You can send to the pound (I think you have to) but it's then that rescue groups can assist and at times, they can help find the breeder etc etc and work out a fate for the dog. Most pounds are able to work with rescue groups in this sense, even if the dog does have minor behavioural issues.

Hi There, please contact the ASCV or ASCNSW if the dog is not 'chipped. I don't know about the NSW club, but I know that the ASCV has an active rescue group and we have brought dogs over from interstate before to also re-home, or re-homed and supported if the foster carer is interstate. helps them from ending up at a pound. Feel free to PM me. Permission to cross post?

I do agree with you, however can you please tell me how we as a country/state or even world wide define a 'professional' dog trainer?! We don't?! It is up to each individual how they define themselves. Same for calling yourself a dog behaviourist/ dog whisperer/ dog trainer etc... there is no quantifying way to define this.. So with this in mind, how can this survey miss out on some valid representation of how people who are getting paid for their services offer and work within the industry and the methods that they use? The survey does ask for your experience and we may find in the results that this actually directly correlates to the training methods use etc etc. As someone said earlier - research is a great way for finding out *some* information, but also a door opener into 'what we need to research further'.... but without research how do we quantify anything? Out of curiosity - which group is this that you are a member of and is this Australian based? If this is the case, then perhaps forward this link or the link to the survey to them? If they fill it out, then there are more 'professionals' as you say with experience who are filling out the survey and therefore not 'skewing' any results that may come out of this :) Agreed :)

I see this point, especially after going and watching some of the presentations from the PHD students - results/conclusions being stated but really often the numbers of dogs used in various studies are soooooo limited that they are not a true representation. However this one seems okay, just seems strange that these types of surveys are left to a random online - with an online survey info can be added by anyone.... where there is either minimal or no experience ... Surely there is a way for this info to go to "professionals" i.e. those that advertise in newspapers, have independent websites, advertise in telephones..... Plenty of people have elevated opinion of their status as a dog trainer..... I think what the researcher is trying to find out though is what the trend is, so that is why you want a large pooled number from 'random' online people. Remember that it clearly states, the demographic to which you have to be to complete the survey is to be a 'paid' dog trainer. Now regardless of their qualifications or skill-set - if they are being paid for their skills by clients, then their views into training methods and how to train dogs IMO is valid and worthy of being recorded in the survey :). with the bold statement in mind (taken from the survey aims) I think that the larger 'pool' of trainers, the better the information regarding the training tools and techniques used will benefit the research :). JMO!

That is gorgeous!!!!

*bump* I've done the survey and thought I might bump it for anyone else who might have missed the original posts. I think it's a beneficial survey to do as anything that devles into further research about the best training methods for our pets has my vote Anyone else done it yet?

Congrats hesapandabear!!!

they are gorgeous shelbyville :) Oh yes, I'm totally a worry wart when it comes to puppies!! Infact, I sometimes think I should just not weigh them and just observe and go by how they are looking health wise  How is your baby girl doing today Lindsay? Good, still putting weight on. She's getting more from Ruby too. She was still quite constipated today and the warm water trick didn't work, and she was sooking and not settling on the boob well today so we popped her over to the vets, who gave her some electrolytes and something to relax her belly a little (I'm not sure what), and suggested upping the water in the supplement. The vet also gave her a thorough check and everything else is looking good. :) Bummer about the consitpation, but glad to hear that she is coming along nicely :)

Yup - sure enough I found some this morning :). Mine has free access to and from the puppy room either when I'm home or not. I learnt the hard way with her first litter that she is perfectly able and willing to be an excellent mother, but will not be defined by her mother role alone and is an independent woman with other interests and needs (ie I could never keep her in there) . It's taken me a while though to relax and figure out that she knows what she is doing better than me and is perfectly capable of feeding and cleaning them when needed to keep them growing healthy without my silly human interference. I swear she looks at me like "and have YOU ever successfully raised 7 babies before?" Yes, I think I'm quickly learning this too!! Kinta seems perfectly content with them and the babies are certainly not fussing! I'm sure Kinta will be laughing at me thinking "Mum do you REALLY think I don't know what I'm doing?!!?" Mind you it still worries me . Such a worry wart I am! Especially because she had a cesarian too - I think jumping for her shouldn't be on the cards! Ah well - I have a friend coming over at lunch today, I'll go home at lunch tomorrow and I think on Thursday I'll kick the other dogs outside and she can have the run of the house . Wow - everyone's babies look so huge compared to mine! At 10 days old we are on average around the 550-600g mark after last nights weigh in. The smallest is 500g and a bit of a worry for me (like I said, worry wart!) because she hasn't put on much weight the past day. Will see how she is at weigh in tonight. She's fat and healthy and always at the boob, so I'm sure she's fine ;) *sigh* Puppy raising is soooo stressful!

Thanks Ososwift! Have never looked for it before! :)
-
thanks Underfoot!! I might give that a try! My kids are steadily putting on weight but I wouldn't mind seeing them pack on a bit more. today they only put on around 20-30g each, while other days 50-70g is the norm. Also stressed me out because Mum had jumped the baby gate and was not with her pups when I came home from work . Where do you get the goats milk from?
-
First day back at work for me today . I'm trying to come home at lunch breaks to toilet and look after the pups, but have my friend coming tomorrow because I am assessing shelter dogs and I don't want to bring the germs home more often than necessary. I had to leave Kinta for 10hrs today too while I was at work due to the weather. The drive was so horrendous getting into work, I couldn't spare the 1.5hr round trip that it normally takes me to check up at home today. Luckily all were well and fine, though I do worry about them . Miss Kinta was NOT in her whelping area when I got home having jumped the baby gate. Lets hope she wasn't out for too long and if the puppies had cried for her she would have had motivation enough to jump back over!! Puppies were all fat, warm and happy when I checked on them though, so can't have been too bad! So much for keeping her quiet following her surgery  She's incorrogable that one! Once she realises she can do something, she likes to do it as frequently as possible and problem is she's just too nimble!

Got a quick question for you all :) What do you all use as disinfectants/ washing material when you have puppies and what is the best killer of most germs etc? I ask because I work at an animal shelter and last litter I got my hand on a bottle of F10 and am hoping to do so again, however buying this in excessive amounts is veerrryyyy expensive . I have lino floors which I'm mopping with eucalyptus and some anti bacterial wipes that I'm cleaning the whelping box with. I strip off before I get into where the puppies are and leave my work boots in the garage. On days when I am working directly with the shelter dogs, I am changing before I come home, and then soaking my clothes in F10. I guess I'm more concerned this time because we have had a few outbreaks of Parvo this year, and I definitely do NOT want to put my little ones at risk. Any suggestions?!?

Breeding With Bitches Who Have Had A C Section
leopuppy04 replied to Andisa's topic in Breeders Community
To add onto my previous thoughts: My bitch had inertia and a c-section again. So now I guess this line is now under consideration as it's not something I want to breed with or into a line of otherwise healthy whelpers. All of her relatives have always whelped easily. I will await and see what happens with her daughter when I breed her later this year. If she too has intertia then I would have to seriously consider before continuing her lines. I hope to keep something from this current litter in co-ownership and that too will need to be into consideration if we keep a female. Having said that - if either boy produces a pick boy, then I would consider keeping that and breeding back to a line of clear/ healthy whelpers :). I guess it all becomes a game of what are you aiming to improve MOST on in your breed. One thing for sure is that I don't want to produce a line of girls needing a c-section. -
Everyone's pups are doing well!! My guys are turning into fat little slugs too and looking more and more like puppers Underfoot - for 13 in a litter or even for any litter - your guys are super huge!! Your mum must be a full on milk machine !

LOL Haven, excess white isn't allowed as it's directly linked to deafness . So there's a reason behind the madness. In Aussies they are particularly fussy about where white is allowed as with the merle as well you have a higher incidence of pattern whites etc. We were surprised to get a mismark as daddy has minimal white and Kinta doesn't have *that* much  BUT having said that I've had 2 tri mismarks (one in each litter) and wow - they grow up to be something quite striking and pretty! I think PJ is following her big sisters footsteps and is going to grow up every bit as pretty as Panda. They really do make quite striking pets :D

Yup Saxonpup - that's little Oscar hugging his mum! Well the pups coped considerably well in the heat this weekend and now it's wet and miserable, so hopefully they'll be a bit happier today. Compared their current weights with the wieght of my last litter (one extra pup) and funnily enough, Kinta's first litter was fatter at this stage!! Only about a days difference though :). These guys are going exceedingly well and getting oodles of socialisation and handling. Their mum is just awesome, and now their over-attentive Auntie who is allowed within the confines of the whelping box area now too (just not... IN it!). As for their uncle Leo - Sorry mate - you have to wait a few more weeks
-
Check out that belly ;) very cute indi girl!
-
And now for some fun shots! the glowing mother doing some Yoga PJ practicing her panting technique ;) Oscar those kissable pink paws :p all flaked out fromt he heat!
-
Haha RS - nah - if Leo goes - he has to have a return to sender stamped on him!! Benefits of a hot day is that you can grab some good shots of puppies for their weekly photos! One week old today and all growing strong! Gizmo PJ Oscar Alfie Zee Two

I'd say she's getting sufficient amounts then.... mine usually look 'skinny' for a day or so before they get that really plump feel, and I don't know whether it's normal or because of the c-section, but all of mine in both litters have lost weight int he first few days before rapidly gaining...

From my experience (very limited as you know!) I would let the pup tell you. If she's unsettled and not thriving then I would supplement. One thing I've noticed as a stark difference with this litter being Kinta's 2nd is that the milk came through early and while the pups fed a lot, they are the most contented puppies around and I think it's because they have constantly full bellies. The last litter was a little more noisy especially in the first day because the milk hadn't come down yet. I'd supplement if need be - especially coz she's only a little 'un. I'd assume you would only need to for a day or so as Ruby's body was preparing for 6 kids, so her milk will come through soon enough.
