Initially - make sure your dog knows how to walk backward in front of you - I find that helps .... You can do this simply by walking into the dog- possibly with a lure if they tend to 'sit'.... (hold the lure down low to keep the head down a little!). Then start with dog in heel position and a wall on the dogs left side (ie: wall, dog, you).... that way the dog can't swing their bum out. Then cue 'back' and you start walking back. If they stand up to walk back C&T. If they take a step back C&T then gradually increase the distance Good luck

Teaching Drop From A Stand....
leopuppy04 replied to ShellyBeggs's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Hiya Shelly I prefer a drop from stand as you get a much more fluid motion - helps a lot in the trial ring! If you are using food - simply lure it downward and back between the dogs front paws. DONT keep moving it back as the dog will just walk backward . Hold it there but don't let the dog get the treat - usually they will go down into a bow and you may need to put slight pressure on the bum (around the hips) to get them down. As the bum goes down - say "Drop" "yes" and reward. To keep them down - put about 5 treats on the ground.... before they finish, drop another down, and another... and another.... you get the pic - pretty soon they won't want to get out of the drop as that is where 'all good things come'! Hope this helps! PS - shouldn't you be doing something else today OFF the internet -
Which Method Of Training To Use ?
leopuppy04 replied to hazel's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Hi Hazel Personally - I don't think it is really down to 'what' method to use but rather what method suits you and your dog. I am sure those at your puppy school will be able to give you heaps of tips etc. I'm a big fan of the clicker and love it for teaching all kinds of obedience, agility and tricks.... anybody can use it once you have the basics down pat. But if you use a clicker - don't forget to use your voice and not rely on just that 'click' . I have some great links on my web page for clicker training (link below) and also Ness has some clicker links that I haven't added to my webpage yet . As for drive training - I really don't know much about although it seems to be more driven toward those who want to go further in their training - not to say it won't work in a pet dog, I am sure it will, but it may be something you want to start later once you have your head around the basics of training Good luck with your training and glad to hear pup is settling in well -
Should We Have Been Dq'd?
leopuppy04 replied to Cosmolo's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
You will get DQ'd if she *moves all 4 feet (don't I know it - Leo shook in his SFE which was an immediate DQ!) *shows any form of aggression *does not maintain position (so in your case coz she 'bowed'). Does that make more sense? LP, the dog will not be DQed for moving it's feet or not maintaining position. A DQ & an NQ are completely different things! If you are DQed the dog is DQed from any further competition on the day & the judge has to provide a written report to the controlling body within 14 days except in instances where the disqualification was incurred for barking or a correction from the handler. A zero score (& an NQ) is for a dog which breaks from position, shows an obvious tendency to attack or doesnt carry out the principle feature of the exercise. Which IMO is what Cosmo's dog did. Check your rule book . oops I keep thinking that DQ and NQ are the same things in obedience (know they are different for agility) - so what would cause a dog to be DQ'd then??? -

What type of training do you do Magnum? Might I suggest that anywhere your boy comes into contact with people and greets them in a positive manner you reward him?? That way he can build up an association that strangers = food.... if you don't want him to be lovey dovey to everyone - then perhaps do this in situations where you do wan thte dog to be confident ie: shows. Talk to a few judges/ friends and ask them to 'go over' your dog (staying away from the head initially) - keep up lots of rewards so that he knows it is a good thing.....
-
Magnum - what has he been like outside the ring with people doing a SFE or just simply patting him etc?
-
oh I just LOVE Chester! So cute! You should 'shape' his wave so that he limps instead! Ok - here are some additions from me (apologies for the lighting!) - all free shaped I think I have put the others up :D
-
:D I travel almost 1.5 hours to go to Lure Coursing with my Boxer Rocky - he LOVES it - but there's people who travel further than us. -WithEverythingIAm haha - I find the more your dog loves the sport - the further you are willing to travel too :D
-
You see, I have always thought the opposite - agility & obedience are almost totally at odds with each other IMO. I think that agility & herding are alot more similar than obedience & agility & probably compliment each other better. Also agility & flyball seem to me to be things that would compliment each other as well. LOL - yeah a lot of people seem to say that - yet honestly - I find that they do come together nicely in what I get out of them ;). May I ask, since I haven't done much herding - how does agility/ herding compliment each other - is it the distance work?
-
For anyone interested - more vids on www.aussienut.blogspot.com Bummer Arya - you should see them - I like these 2 vids especially . Yeah - I love training kitties - this one is great for learning stuff. He knows sit, beg and come - but targeting is the first thing he learnt with a clicker ;). Seems like he is a good candidate! Ooh - which relative? Do you know their name?
-
LOL - hmmm... I guess i'm a dog sport whore I do obedience and agility mainly with a bit of showing and herding. I don't feel that I am affecting the dogs in any way by doing these sports nor do they get confused - they don't make 'showing' mistakes in obedience and likewise.... My main interests lies in Obedience and Agility - like Jules - the herding is just for fun - I only go to it when I can. I get bored with 1 sport, so like to have lots of different things to teach and personally I think Obedience/ Agility compliment each other nicely. I'd like to do freestyle one day - but I don't have the time atm..... so yep - self confessed dog sport whore/ tart (personally i'm a lover of the 'tart' word too!). As for how far i'll travel no more than 1hr or slightly more away from home
-
Use it and love it - Shall I add that to your list Laffi ! I love it for teaching a whole array of tricks.... although - it was useful until K got it one day when I was at work and CHEWED it!!! Arya is right though - the hand works well - it is good for agility too ;)

You BETTER! When is the lucky day?!?! I'm soo excited for you!!!
