  1. Huge congrats B_C - she looks very proud of herself!!!
  2. WTG Oscar and Dogdude - Knew you would score well when you got off your butt and started trialling !!!! What a loot!!! HIGH in Trial too!!! !!! Congrats !
  3. This is a great idea - and one i've been using a lot on my moderate - high drive dogs. It really helps them jump out of their skin and i'm sure it will help you too! My girl is a little like that (maybe not to that extreme) as she doesn't have the 'look at me' presence at the moment. She'd much rather be doing something fun like obedience or agility The key is to make "showing" fun.... perhaps try some clicker training? This helps 'gee' the dogs up a little in my experience. Give lots of praise and use some really tasty morsels such as kabana/sausage/devon etc. Try and find something your pup really likes that he will truly work for. Make sure YOU are fun to be around and exciting and your pup may pick up on that. On the whole though - I think the main thing comes out of the ring... play games with him - throwing food in one direction, than another direction, play rough with him and try and get him keen on toys.... it's an uphill battle to begin with, but the rewards are endless. Keep sessions nice and short! Then you can try and incorporate this enthusiasm into the ring, like B_C said, using a key word Hope this helps! I know how you feel - try turning a high drive nutso dog into a quiet as a mouse dog just because of her post season blues!!!! .... She normally loves toys but now she will only play in short bursts.... bring on the two weeks!
  4. That's me precisely only I use "turn" rather than cross! I was worried they wouldn't know which way to turn, but in they know to just turn 'away' from me etc :D. I don't know my left and right at the best of times, so how will I be able to on the run and know the dog's left and right :) :D
  5. Me too. I have to have a goal to work toward and the competitions give me that. I find them a little stressful, but not as much as what I used to - this is after all fun! I'm actually really excited about entering obedience again soon!!! You saw me at the agility trial Jules - don't take it too seriously etc... and have a good laugh when the handler 'fluffs' .... I have fun and the dog has fun, which is after all the most important thing!
  6. Badluck Kowai and Gamby Well done BC! Gamby - I too found that the lead Leo switched right off. Gave him the perfect opportunity to gawk around as he would always get a 'tug' eventually (lead reaches it's length etc) when he had to continue to follow. You can see it in the tapes - perfect attention - then he goes off to space, only to come back again Once I hit Novice - this disappeared as he much preferred heeling off lead  He'll get there eventually!
  7. I think it is a great idea to teach both. If your dog is a little crooked on the front - having a left and right finish that your dog knows and understands can give you a better chance at a straighter finish. It is also a great way to prevent any anticipation which may happen! I use both - with my boy i'm more likely to do the one around me (he finishes straighter, and it gee's him up!) with my girl - I tend to use the flip - she looooves it
  8. That is excellent news Helen! You must have put in SO much work to get her to that level!!!! Congratulations to you and Tilly
  9. Oh come on Arya - WE all know the truth of what kind of a trainer you are!!! I bet that is how you got your Novice pass and 1st isn't it!!! Belting her with a hose!!!! ;) I can't think of a reason Tangwyn - in Agility dogs are run 'naked' coz they can't have tags on their collars for safety reasons - so running off can't be the *only* reason?!?!
  10. This I think really depends on the judge. Always make it a point to ask in the briefing. Almost every judge i've been under has stated they don't mind if the dog runs out of the ring, so long as we get them back immediately and don't leave the ring with the dog off lead etc. The way I get around it (Leo tends to spot people and want to rush up to them!) is simply to call out a massive HERE after the last obstacle and then he can give me 'hugs' (his reward) before we exit the ring.... seems to work.....
  11. I'll be there  So I can cheer you on when i'm not shaking in my boots worrying about our debut back into the ring!!!
  12.  :cheer:  OMG!!!!!! I'm SOOO HAPPY for you Arya!!!! Well done!!!!! Go TESS!!! All that hard work paid off! No one deserved that pass more than you!!!!
  13. Hiya ZZ Couldn't agree more with this.... mind you - some of the traditionally trained dogs are quite happy in the ring too.... but I guess that is because the negatives are met with a positive etc, etc. Welcome to the forum
  14. May you join!!!! I think that warrants a thread of it's own!!! What an achievement!!! WTG BC!!!!!! TO - great result with Nova
  15. ;) I thought we all knew I was the best handler around!!!! Which is why at our next trial a friend of mine is running him for me :D ;) (only ONE run!!).... LOL - I made her promise she'll make it look bad, or i'll be very jealous if my dog runs better for her than he does for me (but might forgive her if we get a Q and 1st ;) )
  16. They certainly don't tend to knock bars. Right - Leo needs some 'poodling' then... he knocked 3 bars on the weekend - one in each run The 4th run.... handler took him around the wrong 1/2 of the course
  17. - now I get it- they get so much height because of their ears!!! It makes 'em fly!!!!! :D!
  18. WTG Helen, Bella, Silvawillow & Kirra!!!! What a team!!!!!
  19. Well done TADPOLE! Abbie did a BEAUT run - you should be proud - esp with those dratted discrimination between the tunnels (were my soddy dog went wrong :D :D ). Feralpup - you are correct . Unfortunately you just had the wrong judge for it to happen under. I've had someone tell me off because I accidentally dropped the lead outside the ring while dog was attached (HARD) to the tug.... so some are more lenient than others! Well done with Open as well . I don't have any brags this weekend. Leo in his usual style did ONE thing wrong each run (one knocked bar, one missed obstacle due to me being adventurous!)... We would have got 2 clears in Excellent Jumping, except the first one I did a 3 bar lead out, dog wasn't set up *quite* straight enough (he wasn't looking through the tyre...) and missed the obstacle... the rest of the run was beaut. The 2nd run he ran clear, but I join Rom in those stakes as I missed the course and ran the wrong way ..... I was still super proud of him though as the main aim for today was to get speed.... and I got it :p Kinta had a show and no luck there - we are determined on being the bridesmaid!!!!
  20. Another thought BC - I also worked with a dog that was fear aggressive to people as part of my dog training course. This person was referred to me from my vet. The dog wouldn't stop barking at strangers and if pushed enough would bite them. I found a brilliant way to get her confidence up and trust in strangers was for the stranger to *avoid eye contact *throw food in her direction (obviously not aiming at the dog!). As the dog became more confident, the throws would become shorter and shorter until the dog was taking from the person's hand. If the dog is not taking food - it is obviously too stressed, and a step back needs to be taken - perhaps with the owner C&T calm behaviour (watching the owner even) with the 'stranger' in presence. All it does it reinforce that strangers = good things for the dog. This dog came up in leaps and bounds - partly because the owner was more confident in the dog also I believe
  21. Basically I was doing it the fist couple of weeks she came to stay with us as she was a little unsettled.... now I have to fend her off the visitors as she tends to plaster herself on them I would basically C&T any 'positive' interaction with the visitor - ie: no slinking, barking, growling or anything I don't want. I would C&T her 'looking' at the visitor and reward myself as well as C&T any forward, confident movement toward a stranger. I'd also give the stranger food to feed her with and she might get a double whammy -so food from them and a C&T from me while she is saying hello . Initially I would only bring her in when the visitors were seated, then to when they first arrived..... Seemed to work well here Would this seriously be a problem for you though?! If you ever got to this point, give yourself a pat on the back for bringing out such confidence in your dog!! Then I would go about refining the training such as 'asking' permission before she goes up to say hello etc . Personally I think a dog TOO keen to meet people is easier to train/ handle than a dog that won't go near people
  22. I think it would work. I tried a little of it on my girl at home, with excellent results. If the clicker is conditioned appropriately it has connected to it a particular 'feeling' - one that would be positive etc with all the food associated with it. So pairing that 'feeling' and recognising that the clicks come with meeting new people I would think you would have success.
  23. I'd put that on command - that way it will be easier for her to link the 'catch' behaviour from her nose to the 'catch' command ;) I found it really worked well for my boy
  24. Yay!!! Go Daisy and Husky - see not the evil beagle at all!!!! I had another great night with the spunky boy tonight! Open obedience training He offered me some fab heelwork, but not drop dead astonishing :p Held his SFE with his most favourite person in the world (he has bikkies in his pocket ya know!) ;) Great DOR Retrieve with ENTHUSIASM :D *ducks from Ptolomy* - Lovely straight broad jump COP - pretty good as I did it from the furthest distance I have - although rather than moving his front feet back into the sit he came forward into the sit from the drop (but didn't creep)..... not sure if that is acceptable or not Best of all.... HE HELD HIS OUT OF SIGHT SIT STAY with about a gazillion things going around him as the next class was setting up :p ;) :p So guess who got some jackpots tonight ;) ;)
  25. can she catch food when it isn't on her nose? reliably???
