  1. Hmm... yes K's first trial will be when I'm confident enough to enter her...... hmmm...... Ness- I've got to get Leo's UD right first... and right now we have..... ummm...... next question please :p
  2. LOL - I'm the same - never use a lead - I might do CCD - not sure yet, probably will.... Yeah Jules - lead will come out soon - I just keep forgetting to bring it :D
  3. I don't think it's the reward schedule as that is variable. She needs a lot of practice around distractions and unfortunately, when I was converting/ editing it, the sound vanished.... but almost every time she looks away is because of a sound elsewhere . She looks gorgeous. BTW, I will be humming the song all night now. BTW, I had legs like yours......years ago!!!!!!! LOL. Impressed with the video, nice and steady. Mine are disgraceful in comparison. I wish I never put that song on - it's driving me Haha - I hate my legs!!!! Ewwwww! LOL! I'm a bit disappointed with the quality actually as I find it a bit blurry - but it's new - so maybe I haven't set the settings right or something?! ;).... It just better give me better quality than that :D

  5. She's just on 18mths. LOL - point taken! It's hard trying to juggle between 2 dogs i've decided! What's right for one, isn't necessarily right for the other ;) Mind you - I think part of the 'bobbing' is just coz she's a silly git and sooo happy to be out there Yes, the recall was crap. Very slow pace for her - don't know why! Thanks
  6. Thanks DD! Duly noted - I watched it again, and only saw a few points where she looked away (both in turns and halts)... I think part reason could be is that she is still a little green in terms of proofing around lots of noise so tends to turn her head to the sound. She does snap back to attention pretty quick in this (which is good!!) but it is something we are working on Will add that one to the books. VERY long heel pattern! We rarely do one that looong!!! LOL. I just love that she was enthusiastic to the end though :D. Thanks DD
  7. Thanks FHRP! I know some judges might ping me, but I'm willing to shoulder that as this is the type of heeling style I like Good point and duly noted - I think I only did it once I should know better though ;). Oh - I forgot to say Cosmolo - Fast pace will be faster eventually - it's a little slower at the moment as it's more important to me that she maintains position (we've only just introduced the 3 paces)... When she gets that down pat, speed will increase :D. Oh and for recalls - she does tend to go slower the shorter they are...
  8. The very first time - I missed that she sat before we took off again - otherwise she would have been re-commanded. Didn't know she did that till I saw the vid :D. No - Her recalls are usually rocketing in - that was slow for her - she had got one wrong before that, so that usually slows her down a bit . Normally - I have to brace my knees
  9. Yes - song gets a tad annoying doesn't it! Thats what happens when you are choosing songs at 11pm at night!!!!
  10. Hiya guys! First 'real' video I've made of my young girlie who hopes to make her debut this year (If I get my act together ).... Would love some comments and critique please! Apologies for me going out of frame sometimes - my cameraman was put on the spot and a little nervous :D This is our first shot back since club break up end of November.... and methinks she has forgotten to stand ;). Again - would love some comments !
  11. I'll make sure she's there Ptolomy She's looking awesome Arya! I couldn't believe the dog you brought with you last week was the same that I saw you working in the ring last year! I better tell Leo to get his socks into gear - he has some stiff competition coming his way! You should be so proud of her. How is the mat work going btw?! Have you had another go?! I've done a few more run throughs with the gloves - 3/3 each time - even when sending to the furthest one away Now.... all I need to do is find some dogs who will help me distract the feral beryl! .....
  12. I find this part difficult - as while you may be thinking you are 'rewarding' her for nice *calm* behaviour - are you really sure that you are? Just because she isn't reacting, doesn't mean that she may not be 'thinking' about it. Speaking from experience with another issue....... while you think you are doing the right thing, you may be inadvertently rewarding something else. Then it's great that you are taking action now. Trying to fix a 'small problem, which might not even be there'... is better than fixing a huge problem Depends - you did say she had a few times there where she was un-nerved. Perhaps keep her out of the lagoon area/ area where the mad zoomies are happening (heightened excitement etc... as well as other dogs not thinking what they are doing)... or perhaps have her on lead there. I think that from what you have said - free reign at Kepala won't build up her confidence just yet. But that doesn't mean leave her at home - by her being 'there' but not interacting will not affect her but actually may be beneficial. For the moment - you are her security blanket. If you can reward her for 'focus' while there are other dogs zooming around her - she will realise she won't be bothered when with you - you *will* look after her. I believe that when she begins to get confident again in that fact, she will be more willing to leave your side. As for toys - hard to do at Kepala but give her a few goes on her own and if Axle chases toys - then also hold her back while she watches him get it (praising her and telling her how good she is for doing so)... If she gets snitchy with ANY dog - game ends, toy goes away, lead goes on without a word and you LEAVE.... if at Kepala, maybe leave for a few mins and do NOTHING exciting.... why should she be 'rewarded' for that behaviour etc. Perhaps even bring a crate and set that up?!
  13. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?...CMGPHL9D1N1.DTL Here is one I read not so long ago the comments are very pro-ceasar though.
  14. Laffi - have you tried the chicken neck in the tuggy jackpot yet?? I think that may work. Alternatively - bring her down to Melbourne with you Is there a park near you that you frequent SO often the smells may become more 'boring' like home? What time are you training? AM the smells are the worst..... afternoon I find the dogs sniff less
  15. Depends on the situation, the dog etc. If the dog is close and not running away full pelt - but didn't adhere to my command - i'll collect them and put them right back on lead. If my dog knows the criteria (ie: not running up to other dogs etc) and *almost* break it - I will verbally correct them "Aah"! If I know my dog is safe and there isn't much fun to be had, I will hide behind a tree/ run the other way. No matter what - *if* the dog disobeys the command - we go right back to the start doing lots of short recalls, less freedom and reminding them what a *good* thing it is to come when I call them (come and they get food/ toys thrown/ pats etc)..... usually the reason for me and my dogs not coming, is that i've made the reward drop a little too much . Having said that - Kinta is a great one for looking at me and if she deems i'm not paying attention - bolt off before you can blink! But... if you call - the little twerp will come charging back with the teeniest bit of an evil glint in her eye....
  16. Thanks everyone for their responses! Ptolomy - UDX is scary! I don't know whether we'll do that or not :D! So far I've been teaching the box through clicker training. It seems to be working well (granted we only started 2 days ago!). He will also pick up each of the scent articles on a normal retrieve (making sure he knows to pick up each one before doing the 'hard stuff'). We also just started seekbacks whereby I'll drop the article infront of us, heel past it a short way and tell him to 'seek'.. He looves the game and shock, horror (many people would have heard me say my dog lacks a nose) he sniffs for it if he can't 'find' it straight away. He just loooves the seekback. For gloves - I have only just found a set and have simply been getting him to retrieve it (one only) so that's another fun game :D. About the seekback - someone told me that I shouldn't use a leather article as the smell of leather will stay on my hands - anyone got anything more on this? About training with friends - I have a great network at club, but everyone is on holiday mode at the moment. I also have a great training friend, but she lives in NZ ;).... Might see if I can 'hook up' with a few others though :D For razzing the dogs up - sounds like I do similar, although sometimes it just *doesn't* work on Leo :D
  17. Ok - these two questions are totally unrelated, but couldn't be bothered starting 2 threads . 1. I've decided it's time for me to pull out the big guns and start thinking about training for UD as I am aware this will take some time! The team is a completely green dog and handler (ie: me!) as we have never gone through this class/ trained for this class before. I want to know a) for any tips on how to train each exercise, b) any links that might get me started on teaching this the right way, particularly scent work and c) what NOT to teach that might muck up his Open work. So basically anything would be most helpful as I have no idea where to start! 2. This second question is more of a general one. I've been thinking lately of what razz up games (or any games really, but mainly razz up) people play with their dogs as I'm always looking for new ideas. These are games with just you and the dog - no food, no toys, just you, dog and your voice/hands. I find this is where I'm lacking at times as I sometimes find it hard to 'razz' my dogs up (who are sooo easily razzed by other people...) yet, it is a great tool to have in terms of using it in training. I'd love to hear some ideas! Looking forward to the responses!
  18. Just a few things - The post written by the RSPCA did say that they use punishment in one form or another (including time outs). Any form or training/ behaviour modification without punishment of some form will get you nowhere (as all of us are aware). As the post also said "being positive is not being permissive" - a positive trainer is not stepping on egg shells around their dog too afraid to do/ say something wrong. A dog, regardless of training method still needs to know what the guidelines are and what is expected of them. Just like with anything - I do get the feeling sometimes that +ve training is often misunderstood as an 'airy fairy' training where the dog is never told what is wrong........ That's all I'm gonna say
  19. I've heard eucalyptus oil keeps them at bay, but I've never had to *try* it ;). I'd assume you just dilute it in the water you wash the dogs in?!

    Parvo In Vic?

What I would do until your pup has it's final vaccinations is to take him around the main street shops or something simliar. The way I look at it is that they can get puppy social through (organised) puppy dates or PPS. Human/ weird sounds/ environmental social - what better place than the main streets of shops etc. And these are concrete that (if outside cafe's) are cleaned regularly! And think how many people will stop and ask to pat the puppy . When he is 16wks then you can venture to parks etc. That way - you are not missing out on critical social, yet still being cautious (given that you have grass in your yard so the pup won't be freaked by it ;)) As for your older dogs - on lead walks and off lead runs in open ovals (exposed to sun) away from other dogs would be pretty safe IMO If you actually life *in* Frankston, i'd of course be more cautious - perhaps driving your adult dogs somewhere for a walk and driving pup somewhere for it's excursions

    Parvo In Vic?

What I know - Parvo can stay in an area for around 7 years in ideal conditions. Parvo is killed off in direct sunlight and extreme head (so the middle of a soccer oval that is exposed to sun is unlikely to carry parvo). Exercise caution (stay away from the PPS with the outbreak), but please still socialise your pup in one way or another. Do you have an older dog at the moment? If yes, you do know it could bring the Parvo back to the puppy...... something a lot of people forget. Take them out, socialise them, but just be careful, and avoid shady areas
  22. Can you give us a run down on what it covers? This is one I'm really interested in
  23. 2007 Achievements: Leo - CCD, CD, JD & 2 passes for both his AD and CDX. Kinta - no titles, but great foundation for 2008 in obedience & agility. Some classes in grps, countless RBCC and a few BCC under her belt too I'm also immensely proud of what I have achieved in small steps with the dogs - overcoming small hurdles, adapting to living with 2 dogs and splitting up my time adequately with them. Working out how to best motivate the dogs and working with them as a team. I really feel that with both dogs we have developed our teamwork a lot this year ;). Most of all I'm proud of the fact that I can now calm down a little before a trial and see it for what it really is - FUN as opposed to a chance to fail ;) 2008 Hopes: Leo - CDX, AD, JDX, SD & GD. Also would love to have some strong groundwork laid for UD (possibly ready for trialling). Love my boy, and with him, nothing is impossible . I want to work a lot on his agility building up his speed and drive throughout the course and keeping it up there. I want him to enjoy each and every trial we enter, pass or fail so that we just have a good time out there ;-). A score of 190+ in obedience would be icing on the cake as like Ness - I know he is more than capable of achieving that score Kinta - Aust Ch, CCD, CD, AD, JD. Same as Leo - I want her to remain her drivey self and be able to enjoy each and every time we are out there training and having fun! I don't really have any other plans I can pin point ;)
  24. - you scare me Ptolomy!!! Though - on that note - how do I book for private lessons . Best of luck Ness - let us know how you go ;) Congrats to all lately - Amypie - well done!
  25. Ooh - and an Aussie! No-one can live without an Aussie
