  1. Another brag for me today Leo debuted in the UD ring today and did me proud I had NO idea how he was going to go and like most green dogs you expect a few (or a lot) of errors AM trial he missed the seekback and then in the directed jumping went back to LOOk for the seekback . Other than that he gained almost full points on all other exercises only loosing a point or two here and there (when the HANDLER drops the article it doesn't help ). To say I am happy.... well that doesn't really cover it . He worked far better than I ever anticipated PM trial he was pretty tired and given the heat of the day he didn't work so well (boy there were a lot of 0's in that round!). He missed the seekback again, BUT did the box this time... only dropping next to it . Apparently mum was SO excited when he brought the metal article back he decided to bring back ANOTHER metal article ;). On the whole again - he did well, sometimes just needing a second command to switch that brain in ;) Kinta was also entered . A really disappointing first trial, sitting on 188, got bitten by a bug in the down stay and the sat up to scratch it off her ear (wasn't even a stress scratch... just a OMG I have an ITCH! )... so blew a first place. Luckily in the PM trial she behaved really well... messed up her heeling a little so was a little disappointed with that, but like Leo she was also tired and hot . ended up with first place and 191 Qualie Am very proud of the kiddies tonight
  2. thanks for the feedback everyone - this is exactly the discussion that I need herein lies my problem. I am of your belief Cosmolo that a little bit of controlled play in a good environment where puppy owners can LEARN what is appropriate and what is not (eg: not just thinking a tail wag is a happy dog) is something that would be ideal for PPS classes. I think that it needs to be controlled and, the temperaments of the pups suited to each other. So say if you had one timid pup and 4 really boisterous OTT ones, you may not have as much puppy-play in that class. So - on that note... we are at a bit of a stalemate between trainers Having said that - I also think that dogs learn a lot through association, so even though they are not directly interacting, the dogs can still interact and read each other through observation and when on lead. I think having no play REALLY helps reduce the madness you see in 6 - 9mth old pups who just RUN to the other dogs as soon as they see them, because they have only experienced their owners being the source of all things good. I know of several dogs raised like this (with limited interaction with other dogs) and they have wonderful body language and remain calm and level headed when they meet other dogs. So realistically, I do think that both can be done to the benefit of the dog, but as always a happy medium needs to ensue! I think it definitely has it's benefits, but as SnT pointed out, the problem is that I worry too much about the adult dogs. While mine have GREAT temperaments for example, one will not be good for timid pups and the other has great body language but I worry that it will later be a detriment to that dog after having to put up with so many pesky puppies . I think that this can be a great learning curve for the puppies, especially if you have access to a dog that would be suitable, it's just that I would wager most of us do not . Having said that - it never amazes me what puppies read. A lot of this is more *exposure* rather than us teaching the dogs. So a puppy is still wonderful at 'reading' body language better than us and still pick up the signals another dog gives when they don't want to interact. In some ways (and this is a huge generalisation) I have found those with limited or 'controlled' off leash play to be better readers of this than those allowed to have a free for all (not any of the classes that any of us run, but I'm sure you've seen them before! ;)). These dogs have learnt to ignore the signals of puppy play and just barrel on ahead anyway, in which case I think that in a juvenille class (4-6mths) the adult dog might be more beneficial for these sorts of dogs. I guess also - puppy's ideal socialisation time with other dogs is up to 8wks of age.... so imagine what they have learnt from their littermates already..... that's one thing that amazed me with Kinta's litter is there ability to read body language and offer it so well (albeit clumsily ) from such a young age.
  3. feel free to hijack this one Cosmo -it's not moving very fast thanks for the replies Currently we don't have puppy play in our PPS classes and I sometimes find it difficult to explain to clients in a way that they understand . some great tips here
  4. I'm curious - for those of you out there who run PPS classes. Do you let your puppies play or not in the class? As in off lead play? What are the reasons for your decision? How are your classes set up? How do you manage? How many dogs per class? If you don't allow play - why?! And do you ever get clients who are a little disappointed with why play is not allowed?!
  5. LOL ptolomy - you are premature next week.......
  6. - that's our first pass seita She has a couple of CCD passes before going on to CD, and we've only done a handful of those (and failed on minor things )
  7. OMG TN - I love the new siggy - is Jedi doing a trick or was that a random?! I LOVE it! Your two have the best tricks! I kinda miss the old siggy though
  8. ;) thanks everyone! I uhh... didn't tape it coz I figured she was going to make a royal mess of it so didn't even bother teeing anyone up to video ;) Now I'm annoyed I didn't!!! :p TSD - how are you feeling now?! hope you feel better . nothing was said about your absence :D
  9. woo hoo congrats seita! just back from my obedience trial too - and I'm noticing a trend Kinta hasn't been in an obedience ring since the Nationals in August last year. She has loads of potential, but I had just about packed her away for good because she loves throwing away high scores (190 +) on silly mistakes as she is very sensitive to my nerves and the environment. Also having been out of the ring for puppies and such, we haven't trialled for AGES Today we decided to have another crack and we entered Novice. I was surprisingly calm throughout the whole routine and she didn't put a paw wrong. Talk about your heart in your mouth for the stays!!!! Especially whent he dog BEHIND us is retrieving a dumbell ;) Well she pulled it all together and we walked away with a tidy score of 198 and FIRST in the ring. To say I am proud would be an understatement! FINALLY my girl was able to prove what she is capable of :p To top it all off - we also walked away with highest in trial!!!!! As for me - I'm still rapt with her heelwork. That's what I dreamed of working with
  10. Depends on the trial Some will let you go up a class - others you have to compete in novice anyway. The saying is that if the closing date hasn't ended, then you should go up a class, but usually, that's no problem... depends whether they have written the catalogue or not
  11. Thanks Dog Dayz! Can't make the first two(?) but I should be able to make the rest. I can't wait! Saw the trial - so will be attending that as well  Can't wait to get back into Obedience
  12. Geocities site won't open for me here Anyone know if Foos is on this year for Nov and who to contact to book in?! Ta
  13. Wow - well done to everyone! Well done to Ptolomy especially - some fantasic results! RS- ruby looks amazing - huge congrats to you. Terranik - I know how you feel. 15. Some photos I took from my visit last week
  16. Nope BB - Zara lives with me and we are minding Panda while her owners are away
  17. Here you go - some 6mth shots Zara: And Panda: together:
  18. Yes - I think we need some B9 - I'm convinced Zara is part giant. Met up with Ollie today and he was so much smaller than I thought he would be! Lucky Panda is around the same size as Z. Photos coming PS - love that photo of Mia too... it looks as though she's saying "wait.... HOW did you do that?!?!"
  19. You betta move faster than that B9!!!!
  20. Happy 1/2 birthday to my "Prime Litter" I can't believe the little bubba's are 6mths old already! Happy 1/2 birthday to Panda, Ollie, Koko, Bronte, Mia and Zara. Mum sends hugs and licks. Hopefully a few of us can 'celebrate' by heading down to the beach on Saturday Guess I might have to snap some photos eh?!
  21. you sure can Verbal and hand signal - but you can't be a leaning tower or pisa with your signal or take a step to the side *makes notes of what to practice in the coming weeks*
  22. Yup - you got it in one TSD I will email you the dates tomorrow We are trying to teach him a 'place' - that's not a problem. at the moment it's a nobody but me can train him rule so that he gets some consistency. But I've since been told he's still continuing (funny, because he's supposed to be out of the yard when they need to get in)... so next is to get them to feed him treats and use treat balls when they put him away etc etc etc.... I guess what I'm looking for is something in the interim while we teach him his 'place' to be quite consistent Thanks SNT - as luck would have it, she was at work last week Gave us some great tips, but like I said, looking for more ideas seeing as there have since been two more incidences Got to find out the 'why' and 'when' first before I can come up with a more appropriate plan for the interim
  23. OK a little more information (just while I wipe my eyes from tears of reading TSD's post ) *Not my goat - it lives at work, and we need to train it *He is definitely the 'BC' in terms of goats - very quick to catch on. Understands a clicker, offers behaviours and has a repitoire of tricks! *we have a few goat specific problems that are causing OH&S issues and he needs assistance to correct this *We have ideas in place, but keep in mind, it's VERY hard to have ONE person handling him, we usually have multiples, which means different skills for these people too *tolerance is running low with his behaviour :D
