LOL don't worry guys - next time TSD and Zig are running, I'll make sure my camera is at the ready :D It was a beautiful run and TSD should be VERY proud of Zig. My duo did well today also. Kinta picking up an excellent jumping pass after a wonderful run, Leo almost ran clear in masters jumping, but his silly handler hesitated and he took the wrong jump . Open jumping he clipped a bar. gotta love a mini trial - all done and dusted by 10:30am!!!

Why? A dog can be declared as a "Dangerous Dog" if it rushes someone or threatens them. It's too late for me to go looking up the wording of the law, but I recall the interpretation could be something along the lines of "the dog jumped up on a person; this frightened the person; the person ergo felt threatened". This is the problem with the law : it is too open to interpretation by each person who reads it - people ASSUME "Dangerous Dog" means the dog has shown real/genuine signs of being dangerous. That's not necessarily the case. Totally agree erny. Technically, yes. although as we all know, this isn't always the case

Where? At the ones I work at we do get purebreds in quite regularly. nobody is denying that there are far more x breeds or BYB purebreeds that end up in shelters, but it certainly isn't an uncommon occurence to have a P/B (with ANKC papers) turn up at a shelter either.

no - it isn't promoting cross breeds at all. Cosmolo -= if they were doing these things and making intelligent crosses (ie working towards a standard, compatible breeds, bred for a real reason etc) then I wouldn't have a problem with them. That is how most breeds today have been developed. I agree with this. I think it is a perfect purpose and is the purpose behind a number of animals in existence today. If there was a way to force people breeding puppies of any heritage (designer, backyard mutt or pedigree) to have a degree of responsibility for each of those puppies then I would be very happy. Sadly there isn't a way to enforce that. I agree with you trisven. What is MOST important to me is responsible breeding and actually breeding for a purpose whatever that may be. If we were breeding pets that were suitable for family homes, and actually limiting those who breed 'without purpose' and sell to anybody we may actually see a reduction in stray and surrendered animals. IMO this is a separate issue. The pounds are full of pure breeds too. It's not because of what the people own, but rather who the market is. those who won't care for their pets won't spend $$$$ to buy a purebreed. Which means that is why there is a higher number of x breeds. We need to address the issue of improper breeding, not paying enough attention to temperaments and not screening the families properly. If we can educate those to actually RESEARCH their breeds first before purchasing their pet, and comitting to the ownership, then again, a lot of these issues will be improved. Add to that responsible breeding where the attention is paid to temperament and health, as well as the right homes, then I think again, we are addressing the issue. to me - the cross breed is the minority of the issue. The main thing we should be looking at is how to control and manage better breeding practices along with public education about pet care.

Tell me about it! I was dumbfounded when I read the questions. Such as "If we find a dog at large, should rangers be allowed to destroy the dog?!" It opens up a whole can of worms simply because dogs out of their comfort zone might act out of fear etc, etc. Scary to think of it.

On the far right hand side - big yellow banner link saying Dangeroud dogs survey etc...
-
Just was emailed this - read through and then answer the survey. I think it's important they get as many views as possible, otherwise, we soon won't be able to own dogs by the sound of things! article: http://www.premier.vic.gov.au/newsroom/9200.html Survey: http://new.dpi.vic.gov.au/home

No worries AD! I feel for you though! nothing worse than seeing the potential, having the same mistake occuring but not knowing how to fix it ;)
-
Is that the same for every training session AD?! I found out recently that I was causing the issue with the 'can't weave at trials'... although that's hardly surprising always the handler isn't it! Someone pointed out to me that I don't de-cel before the weaves at a trial, whereas I do at training. What do ya know! I de-cel and give her room at a trial and she weaves like a pro . Might be something to consider there... think outside the square a little as to what may be causing the weaving issues?!

My last brag(s) for the year Leo had his first run in Masters Agility and walked away with 1 pass . could have got another one but a refusal was called on one obstacle as he had something in his ear and just *had* to shake his head 1/2 way around the course kinta's handler FINALLY got her timing right and Kinta got a lovely AD pass and her AD title! it was a lovely run so I'm rapt with her. obedience today left much to be desired. we got a whole heap of 0's but the judge was still very impressed with Leo. So I guess you take away the small victories right!? poor petal just couldn't get the sequences in the right order. For the seekback he did the box, for the box he did the seekback, for the second time to the box he took the wrong jump . For the heelwork, he failed to sit on the signal (but until then had only lost 2 points for heelwork !) and for the speak he made no sound At least he got his articles Poor little love - i guess he didn't want to finish the year with a 'bang'!

LP I think Kinta is gorgeous..Nice work thanks Kathq

one of my training friends - her dog goes nuts for an old horse whip! -
- it's called grabbing clothes when you're running late for work and not realising what you've grabbed Haha - would you believe that we never practice 1min stays, but we've always been practicing 3min sit stays and 5min downs when we train for Novice Yes - attention at the start peg..... training that we havent' practiced lately ;) :p
-
Tell me about it Ness... she was curious as to what those barking GSD's were saying ;) Or the sniff during 'slow pace' coz mum was going at a snails pace :p
-
I'll swap you for a blonde one ok!! Sorry - I've already made arrangements . I get Flirt for Kinta
-
I was esentially rapt with her TSD. the heelwork wasn't great (again, that's where we lost all of our points ), but given that last year, I was struggling to keep her attention on me and working nice in the ring, this is still MILES ahead of where I was last year. she was so HAPPY in the ring albeit a little distracted Got in on video so will upload shortly Leo worked ok once again - like always, the stuff he does, he does WELL ETA: here's kinta's video.... wasn't overly impressed with her heelwork though
-
No Brag from me today - sitting on 196 and 2 seconds to go in the sit stay and dowwwwnnnn she goes Who wants a black dog?!
-
Hey what's the check in time for the later trial?! I left my schedule at home
-
me too - I'll be there! Haven't done any training though OOPS!

Obedience Troubleshooting
leopuppy04 replied to Ptolomy's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Interesting.... a step to the right, so she's not coming forward at all?! I had issues with Leo taking one huge step forward before dropping. I went back to luring (no cue) and then when he had the foldback down pat, adding a new cue ("park"). Worked well for us Is it in avoidance of something???? Does she ever offer a straight down?! so for example, if it's about 70/30 with 70% being her dropping to the right, one thing you can try is if she drops to the right, release her automatically then ask the behaviour again. I don't want to NRM, but just release her, because after all she *did* do as you asked... which was drop.... when she drops straight down C&T, jackpot and finish... I'm out of ideas otherwise Me?! I'll come back to you
