  1. Zoey- I'm glad it's not just me with seekback issues!!!
  2. My solution - train gloves Does he still jump when you are standing right in front of him? He's worse the closer I am . Hmmm.... gloves..... there is a reason I don't do that! He can't follow direction . Locks into one and I cant' change his mind . I think I just SUCK at teaching it...
  3. Hey guys I havent' been in this thread much but I have a question re: UD Leo has been doing speak for a while now. He does the sit and down perfectly. He USED to do the stand well too, although he's just so darned eager he likes to do a vertical jump while barking .... which would DQ us if we were in the ring.... I need some thoughts on how to fix it. I've used barriers on the ground, but everytime I fade it the behaviour comes back. I've tried fading it really slow too. I've also use a lead with no avail.. Any suggestions? PS - if I cease rewarding the 'speak' when he vertically jumps it's so frequent that he gets confused he stops speaking all together, so I need an in-between step
  4. guys - can someone please tell me exactly where Springvale markets are?! Thanks - coz I'm new to the area
  5. Just because they are a lot of work does not mean they are not enjoyable. I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat! I am super puppy clucky and would be thrilled to get a third dog. Just pointing out the realities of life with a puppy. Some people like the idea of a breed but may not be so thrilled with the idea of waking up at 5.30am in the morning to go for a walk in the rain. and yet you said you would definitely not recommend your breed due to the amount of work involved. If you enjoy it, why wouldn't someone else enjoy it as well? Someone might read my post and think “Ohh goodie! Can’t wait to get a golden and do all these activities!” or they might run. In this case, I don’t think goldens are suited to what the OP is looking for. If the OP reads my post and thinks they will enjoy all these activities then good for them! I agree here - although I haven't read the entire thread I always steer people away from my breed because I want them to know the realities of owning this breed. If I only paint the good things then they'll get a rude shock when things don't go to plan. Infact, I think I (and another friend) scared the cr@p out of Bub before she got her pup with all the things she had to/ recommended to do. Now to Bub's credit, she listened, raised a wonderful pup who is better behaved than mine! I had the same speech given to me when I was looking at Aussies - how they are a working breed, lots of activity, stimulation etc. Not a breed for people who want a dog to love everybody. While MOST do, what if they end up with the one that doesn't?! You have to be prepared for every situation. So that's why we research. The number of times I've heard people on the phones say 'oh but nobody told me that Labs could chew, I always thought they were calm" or something along those lines I have run out of times to count. So I use the motto prepare for the worst, expect the best.
  6. I have both but haven't read either in detail. Both have a lot of focus on targetting. If I were to choose I think I prefer Velcro dog but I'll have another look tonight and let u know tbh though since I've been doing more Greg ferret box work as well as working on general drive and drve toward the tug as well as building value for each obstacle my distanc issues have reduced significantly as the dogs are now really understanding what I want
  7. I'm looking at stocking these for work. We used to stock the Thunderstorm CD's by Dr Cam Day and have sold out... but nobody knows where we ordered them from previously. Any ideas for wholesalers?
  8. ML - did you have to get someone to install that for you? Jules and Erny - definitely want hot water taps outside, although that's something 'down the road' to do... like when I buy the hydro . Just not enough $$ at the moment
  9. Thanks guys. I'm looking more for a hose connector. Like I said - mine used to twist in which was perfect, but this one won't support that. Might have to get the Kmart one afterall . am planning on using the bath, or our current outside bath for them... I just need the hose connector! stormie - how did you get the connector on? Was it really difficult?!
  10. well I've now moved house and with not enough money to buy a hydro *g* I'm trying to see how you all wash your dogs. I used to wash ours outside with a hose connector to the laundry tap which was great (although the hose leaked!) as the dogs could have a lovely warm wash. This connector twisted into the tap which was great. My new taps for the bath are those which don't have twisty grooves - so you just have to slip something on or something like that (descriptions are great aren't they!). Does anyone have any ideas on what type of hose to buy? the only thing I can think of are those hose connectors from Kmart or soemthing, but they have always met with a lot of complaints before! any suggestions would be great!
  11. Happy birthday Bit! Hope your mummy spoilt you! ETA - Bit - I hope you shared your cake coz I want a piece!
  12. I agree with this. I've run friends' dogs a few times and it's a completely different feel because everybody's handling can always be slightly different. I run a BC occasionally and she's a whole heap of fun, but handled with verbal cues etc. I'm also used to running hard in agility with my dogs and with this BC I have to learn to let her go and not race her I've not run a pee wee dog through I do notice differences runnig my 600 and 500 dog as the 600 dog has much wider turns, but also a much later commitment point
  13. I'm so sorry Jed -this is just awful Heart goes out to you. Godspeed to your furry souls lost in the fire.
  14. The red is recessive, so yes perhaps a little harder to get, although not impossible.
  15. Wow - congrats everyone! TSD and Luke WTG! Have just skimmed through so I'm sure that Iv'e missed a zillion people!
  16. No - I don't think that you should put a command on anything until the behaviour is correct. If you start with weaves for example weaves will mean everything from put you head in the entry to do 2 weave poles to do all 12 - it becomes a muddy command. If you put the command on it once you have it right then you don't have that muddiness. Cheers. Tony. ;) :D Agreed!
  17. Hmm.... I'm another of those that don't really like to call out everything on course. By the time you get to masters, calling out "over" for every jump can get tiring. The majority of the time I use these (although I do speak more, I don't think the dog really KNOWS when I say 'see saw' that it's a see saw!) "Wait" (stay at the startline) "Ok" (release from startline or contact equipment) "Tunnel" (I find this definition helps for discriminations) "A" (A Frame) "Walk" (Dog walk) "See saw" "Steady" (usually used on see saw to remind them to ride it down ;)) or to relax them before the weavers "Weave" "Here" (come over here! I try not to use this too much... think of this as an emergency brake!) "Target" (hit your contact) "Go" (keep your but moving and follow that straight line... well for the dogs perspective) For the contacts, I don't usually name them unless it's a discrimination. As others have said, I usually have a lot on my mind while running a course so the less you say the better.... plus I have said 'tunnel' before when I meant dog walk and the dog still did the correct obstacle, so I think what we say is less important than what our body says :D
  18. Definitely - or Buddy from Airbud! Oooh - and Murray from Mad about you - and who could forget Fly from Babe!
  19. Hmm... not sure if mines a brag or not . I've been told to pull my finger out and get training for those open stays. Kinta didn't put a paw wrong in her run through this morning and it felt absolutely beautiful. She even swung her bum properly for the LAT!!! Leo was also fast and eager throughout his UD run through too.... Think they are trying to tell me to get off my bum and sign up for a trial
  20. Oh for SHAME - Leo has to sit next to a GIRL! My friends dog Gillie rolling in the sand: Darn - I missed it! Jet Flying Leo! Beach fun times Count the Aussies and the odd one out!
  21. Nawww - thanks . I think so too This one looks like she learnt how to sonic bark like Bolt
  22. Hi All, I'm moving house soon and (eventually) would like to erect some dog runs for the dogs and puppies when we have them. Never having to do anything like this before, I was wondering what peoples personal experience is. *Do you prefer a DIY kit (for someone who is an absolute nuffy) or would you rather someone come to design one for you *What would your rough estimate of cost be (including a roof for 2 reasonably sized runs)? *Are there any companies you would recommend? *Would you concrete or would you grass it? *Do you have any do's or dont's as recommendations? *Any must-haves? If possible I would rather not concrete (because if I move I can just take down the runs and take them with me, but the concrete may be a wee bit confusing for those wanting to buy the house ) TIA
