  1. There sure is - there is a website (can't remember it, but someone might) about tricks that may help agility. I'd certianly start by teaching them targeting (both your hands and a distant object) - this will help you to get your dog to work ahead of you. You could practice your crosses, but i'll let someone else explain how. You can get out a witches hat or something and teach the dog to do around it, thereby teaching an 'out' - again to help your dog work away from you. Teach your dog to walk backwards and step sideways to move their back legs only (sorta like a circle, with front legs stationary) - this helps them with rear end awareness. I am sure there is plenty more, but that is all I can think of!
  2. How Sad. My thoughts are with the family. I just hope Page is not suffering or in pain
  3. I agree with you Vickie.... in some sense. I believe that it is important to do some 'basics' with a puppy, but I have found that Leo picks things up a LOT faster now at the age of 2 than he did when he was younger. But is that because of previous training or things 'clicking'.... i'll never know. Kinta is eager to learn, only starting training at 5-6mths and even then all she has learnt is sit/drop/stand and recall. Is she smarter, more switched on from the beginning or is it because she wasn't trained until later? BUT, I have seen CTD dogs work and they enjoy what they do. It is up to her how she wants to train her dogs and if it works, why change. All of her dogs are willing to work and don't seem to be 'burnt out'. Again, all she did was make a statement - it wasn't a blanket BC thrashing.....
  4. There is also little error a dog can make in a tunnel and little chance of injury (ie: hitting a jump, falling off contacts etc). So they have extreme confidence with the obstacle and what we expect of them.... result - super speedy tunnel lovers!
  5. Ness - again your dog sounds just like Leo. They have the ability to do the work, yet Leo is not quite so driven or active as most Aussies/borders. It is a great change when you see him with a bit of zing in his training (thank Dog for Kinta!)... since I got her, Leo has been MUCH more enthusiastic about training ;). Any dog that you train should be a pleasure - whether it was easy to get there or not.... afterall, we all do it for the love of the sport don't we. At the end of the day, who cares how many titles are at the end of their name.... all that matters is that they have been a great pet and friend! PF - while I agree with you, I still think that no matter who gets up to UD or up to the top in any sport, deserves a medal! No matter what breed - it takes a lot of time, dedication and training on their part. Like Ness said, there have been and will be many a border to struggle to get there
  6. I should know better than to read Ambervale and Siv posts while i'm at work! I've just gone back and read the original post as I missed it earlier. You guys are the best when I think of you Ambervale and what you are doing for Leo, and Siv - when I think that you have given one of your pups to this little Page, when she probably needed a dog the most. You guys are the best Sad news that Page is not well. Why is it that the good ones are taken so young and people who shouldn't be fit to live on this earth can Ambervale and Siv - I take my hat off to you ;) ;) ;)
  7. aww c'mon - let people come up to you and call ya CTD - could be fun . I might go - will give them a buzz later - depends what is on that weekend, but i'm dying for some herding!
  8. LOL CTD - is the flame suit comfy??? I tend to agree with TO though - I think it gives you a nice feeling of self satisfaction when you get there with a 'not so easy' dog. Not that I can really talk - people have told me that Leo is easy to train.... true, he is, but he also isn't the sharpest tool in the shed . Kinta is a nice (sometimes) change! But then, you have 2 other dogs to think of and do you want to sacrifice your training with them just so you can do something with Tia. Well - as we always say - if the dog doesn't enjoy it, why do it? If Tia enjoys it, I am sure you will keep going ;)
  9. http://forums.dogzonline.com.au/index.php?...;hl=sivaro+gold Is this the original thread? I'm going to sit back and read it :D. Poor girl - I can't imagine what her or her family are going through.
  10. Nope - your dog can be any breed. But you do have to be registered with the canine body - if your dog is a xbreed, they will be registered as an 'associate'. What type of training do you mean? I wouldn't start either Agility or Flyball until after 12mths simply due to the growth.... I want my dogs to finish growing before I do any 'high impact' sports with them. You can start agility earlier (6mths) but it is only foundation stuff with no jumping :D. I wouldn't start serious agility/flyball until 18mths. If you meant obedience - you can start right away. It is up to you - I don't think it matters - If I were to do flyball now, agility would help, but if I had done flyball first, that would also help agility. I think that some basic obedience is a must though :p. Makes both sports a lot easier. It is up to you - I do agility, tricks and obedience (a bit of herding too) at the same time and have no problems. I would add more to the list if I had time. CTD does herding, flyball, obedience, tricks etc all at once with her dogs and has no problems. Your dog will understand the different contexts. How much time do you have *g*!
  11. I can't either, but since our home comp has given up the boot lately I can only check it at work - so there might be some prevention or lock on these comps :D
  12. I've missed the original thread :D - Can someone please post the link for me or tell me what to search? thanks.
  13. No, i've only used the pink stuff..... everything else is plush puppy at the moment . I believe that pet way only supply to businesses correct?
  14. Jesomil - what is the cost etc? Is the 10th a sat? I'm interested
  15. hey leopuppy04, are you thinking of the Petway supergroom pink shampoo with essential oils? They also now have an aroma care shampoo as well which is the same shampoo but with lavender essential olis in it and is purple.Smells divine The aroma care spray with essential oils of lavender and chamomile is an beautiful deoderising spray that lasts for days as well julie Yep - thats the one!!!! LOL - how on earth did you get that out so quick?!?! Where can I get it from in Vic? Do you stock them? I won't be running out for a while, but when I do I want some more - the stuff is fab - smells great and for a shampoo that isn't specifically for whites, it really does bring out the whites well .
  16. I use plush puppy for my 'show dog' and I love the smell of it. I also quite like the oakwood shampoo. But in terms of keeping the dogs really clean, whites white and a smell that still smells *really* nice after a dip in a stinky dam.... it is this pink shampoo stuff. I'll hunt up the name of the stuff for you - I think you get it from Qld or something - not sure..... but I love it!
  17. Yep - this works really well. I've done it with Leo for sit, stand and drop. It really helped him understand what each position meant - and that it meant stay there no matter what circumstance. His positions were pretty stable before I did this though - the whole 'setting your dog up for success' theory
  18. I think it is - I know that a lot of working dogs have difficulty holding a 'stand' or 'sit' because nature tells them to 'drop' once their work is done. IMO the working breeds are the main ones that go down on a sit stay in the obed ring (mine included). Keep the rewards high for just holding a stand.... then gradually adding in your distance.... if he is constantly getting rewarded for standing still... why on earth would you want to move . Same as the 'drop' - remember when you keep putting food down and the dog gives you a look when released "why on earth do I want to get up - more food might fall down!" My offer still stands - come and show me on Sunday and I can offer some pointers after seeing it . Say 'stand' in a 'command' voice.... doesn't need to be happy as such, just not growly. He is probably looking unhappy coz he is uncertain about what he is meant to do ... as he understands the concept better, he will gain more confidence.... even if they 'know' the behaviour - Leo has lost his 'worried' look for the sit-stay, now that he knows what is expected
  19. How did everyone go??? Capanash? Another pass? weisnjac?
  20. Hi Jules, How about working on the stand and getting someone to walk past (without patting him). Then gradually reduce the space until the person is running their hand down his back. If he goes to break - re-iterate "stand" and place him back in position if you need to. I can show you this on Sunday if you like - when is your class? I find growling at them, for me anyway, has made the situation worse - I really, honestly feel that the growling at Leo has been part of the problem with our sit-stays. Now, if he breaks, I try and get someone to remove him out of the ring and tether him to his post (lost his chance for reward) whilst I don't return to him. Works a treat .
  21. I agree ( well not about SARDOG coz to my knowledge i've never seen them work ). No child or animal can ever be completely trustworthy and what we call 'well behaved' without ever hearing the word 'no'. There is 'positive training' and then there is 'positive training'.... we just need to find a balance between praise and 'correction'.
  22. where abouts is the original topic asking a question about the training methods? can I have the link please? Thanks
  23. Will do and thanks again Leopuppy, are you going to the Berwick A & H show tomorow? LOL - Nope i'm not showing again until Mid-March at the Yarra Glen and Eltham shows I'm having withdrawal symptoms! I was meant to go to an agility trial last friday but had to scratch . Off to the beach this weekend and then it is obed trialling/ agility trials up until mid march
  24. I'll be interested to hear what you suggest Weisenjac - let us know wont u!
  25. LOL - I hear ya there! I am the Queen of 'dog not heeling' while on lead because I never use it! First class back after summer and the instructor commented - "where is he today"... LOL no attention whatsoever. I said, maybe I should try w/out the lead and see how he goes.... lol- excellent heeling ... So back to training with the Lead and all is good again - man I hate that thing!
