How about - fast pace heeling with a few about turns thrown in Excellent - so unless you hear otherwise, knox obedience grounds is the place we'll meet . I was thinking - if anyone wants clicker 'help' or 'complex tricks' help we could also do some as I know that there have been a few questions about that lately??? -

Do Knox use their grounds on a Sat Arvo?? That would be ideal. I'm thinking not KCC as they are usually busy on w/ends not to mention it may be further out for some of us. I know really good grounds in box hill, but that is too far out! I'll check my walkies book when I get home All I have is a broad jump, puppy see-saw and some weavers (if I bring a hammer!) As for starting - how about after easter? A sat arvo. Bring along some nibblies and make it a social affair. We'll just break up into small groups (2-3) and then critique each other..... but first you'll have to outline what you are working on and what you are trying to improve/ where your difficulties are. If anyone has video cameras bring them along, but as to who gets videoed will depend on availability. Sound good? -

ummm........ YES!!!!! This could end bad..... very bad Nah - so long as everyone keeps a level head and accepts 'constructive criticism' and POV we'll all come out alive! Lets face it, if all everybody said was "That is really good" - we'd get nowhere! Soo... anyone know of any grounds??? Or a date? ETA: Like I said - don't have to be trialling, but just so long as that is the idea in mind, and it is a general consensus that we will be training for CCD, Novice, Open, UD and UDX stuff..... That was the only point I wanted to iron out . I have no stuff for Open upward though -

Those that are not quite there but aiming for it are fine Just so long as 'trialling' is your ultimate goal - that way if we get nit picky with heeling you won't wonder why 'we care'! LOL. I am planning on going with the puplet, and she is NOWHERE near trialling yet . -

Shoey - absolutely nothing wrong with a correction if used in the right context and at the right time. My guys get corrected . there is such a thing as too much positive training IMO . There is no reason why a clicker and a correction can't work hand in hand. I do however think 'carefully' about whether or not I want to correct a particular behaviour, and usually the only thing that gets corrected is general disobedience and not during training when the dog does something wrong . Don't beat yourself up about it- nobody would think you mistreat your dogs..... hang on - yep - you mistreat your dogs now can I have eddie??? -

Nope not at all - someone just said to line out what training methods you use in the other thread, so I thought I better point it out!!! LOL! seems there are a few hailing from SE 'burbs or areas where it wouldn't be hard to get to - i'm thinking somewhere in Knox at the moment...... anyone that knows nice, flat training grounds that won't be used on weekends - Let me know! -

I agree - i'm not up with the vids yet as I don't have a vid camera (but perhaps we soon will have luck!), but that was the best form of critique. I got great help from a friend in NSW about *everything*, so I just need to get the vids happening more! -
Ok, Seems like a few of us are on the hunt for training partners!!! Who would be interested in once a month training sessions where we can feed off each other in terms of getting ready for trials. Weekends only - dependant of course on what we have on..... Only those of us who have an interest in aiming to get to a high quality trialling standard as if we cover 'basic obedience' (without trialling in mind) it may get a little too hard to conform. If we have a lot of interest I am sure we'll still be able to get it to work. Any ideas? Or Interest (other than that of myself, Shoey and JulesP!) Umm... as for the basics of training methods, I think the 3 of us are motivation/ clicker training type trainers???

Inconsistent Training

Soo true! For example, I started Novice training with Leo this week and was planning on really only working on getting his distance signals/ dumbell work up to scratch. But then, I found that: 1. since i've been doing so much work on 'parking' for distance, he now drops out of heel position when heeling 2. His heeling is atrocious by my standards 3. He thinks he doesn't need to hold a d/b any more! 4. goodness knows how our 'finishes' are going! That just goes to show what drops out when you don't train/ don't train for certian things. so make sure that your goals are flexible. It won't take us long to get back onto task, but it showed me I needed a LOT of brushing up to do!! Also - work with what is working for the training session. If you are making progress in one area - work with that, even if that means you won't complete everything you planned -

Well then, Darn you for living so far away and darn me for no longer having Fridays free! LOL - I need a training partner too! If you are really interested, maybe we could set up a date once a month for training on weekends or something???? -
"obnoxious Toad" Stage Of Development?
leopuppy04 replied to Griffo's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I don't know if it has been said already, but..... make it clearer - if she doesn't do it 1st time, make her do it (as you are doing), no praise, release her and ask for it again. If she does it first go give her a pat, go get some treats, get a toy, go outside... whatever, just make sure she gets a reward . Perhaps the rewards have been cut back a little too much and you are semi expecting her to 'sit' regardless of the fact that she is rarely rewarded anymore??? -

ooh yes - this is true! And have a training partner where you are going for similar goals! I had a great one only she left to move to NZ Ness - wanna move to Mel???? It is much easier when you are able to help each other - but then my training partner was waaay ahead of me so I still felt a bit self concious! -

nup no advice for you!!!!! I have the same problem so am interested to hear responses. I am 100% confident with pet dog stuff but not with trialling stuff - and I feel I should considering I instruct at my local club My training in 'private' is upbeat and fun coz no-one is watching. At club I tend to be a lot less animated and as a result my dogs are never doing as well...... I know what the problem is and i've tried to fix it, but every now and then it crops up again This week Leo's and my agility training was hopeless. I have been a little tired and perhaps he picked up on it but he was slow and non-comittal . He is not usually like that - not to mention I found what we were doing hard coz it was new and a little out of my comfort zone. This tends to switch Leo off coz i'm so nervous/ concentrating on the course. Are you the same Shoey? The only advice that I can offer is to try and just concentrate on what is best for you and the dog. It is hard to do, especially when you know someone is watching and critiquing!!!! -
Nope I haven't heard of anything liks that. Mind you both my dogs have been worked with a soft and loud clicker and they respond to both in the same way . I think it is our body language as well that helps with the "YES" when they have done really well
-
LOL - I just watched the one of Moses - I see what you mean about them doing it different - isn't it funny how they work things out differently. Yeah, i'm going to add distance of Quoit from the pole first before me though and then see how we go from there. I'm really pleased with how he is going so far . LOL - yep, the click is *meant* to be when the qoit is on the pole.... silly delay in sound
-
LOL - i'm loving that everybody is loving clicker training. The clickertrainusa.com guy (boy that is long to write!) is ok. Most of the points he raises are good, but his training can get a little sloppy in some areas. I've only watched a couple of vids though..... The one where he was 'teaching a new command' was just silly....
-
Yep - you're being a smart Cosmolo LOL - I had to giggle when I read your post though... Because I train my dogs to hold position until released as well as the stay/wait - all I do is simply say the command (sit/drop/stand) and keep walking. I tend to only use stay/wait when I am gone for extended periods - eg: a long stay, not necissarily a formal stay. I find it interesting however Cosmo that you have found the opposite to me. I found people who simply say 'sit/drop/ stand' and left, the dogs would break easily. Those who said 'stay/wait' would hold it for longer..... all in all I think it is the training techniques, but interesting none-the-less....
-
haha - now Ness is back to sounding like Leo! refusing jumps when you do a rear cross needing to be babysat.... not wanting to drive ahead!!! LOL!!! Yep that sounds familiar! My current plan is to set up weave poles again to get Leo to really drive through them and see it as one unit.

Which Dog Is Dominant?
leopuppy04 replied to shoemonster's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
No -I think the dogs dominate over certian things and not others. Of course it depends on the dogs individual temperament, but on the whole, with most dogs, there is not one clear leader. -
Upload vids - upload them onto youtube first (you need to sign up) and then post the link . clicker training - check out the links on my webpage - also check out poodle wranglers thread 'clicker training DVD's' I think I posted one there..... If you need more - they are on my computer at home !
-
Yeah - each to their own. LOL - clicker trainers that 'bridge' and those that end behaviour. I do a bit of both, and like you say - more often than not it marks the end of behaviour. But I may click, say for example in a 'stay' when I am x distance away. I expect my dog to stay in position until I return to deliver the treat - then they are released. that is probably one of the few times when the release and click are not closely related
-
But he has only done this once and sounds like he has shown no inclination of doing this before. Next time this guy comes over - get him to greet the dog, give him a few treats and see your dogs reaction. Unless you really want to be throwing treats at your dog while you are kissing someone else.... LOL. Nah - if he is willing you can get this guy to set up a similar scenario while you treat/reward your dog so that he knows it is nothing to worry about. 1) I don't see it as a pack issue as it doesn't sound like he has been doing this before, and you have been practicing NILIF and TOT. 2) If you see it as a problem that is starting to recur - see what I wrote above. 3) If you show the dog that it is nothing to worry about then I doubt this will happen. I'm just thinking that it will all have to be 'set up' as if things really *do* get more physical I am sure the last thing on your mind will be "wait I have to get some treats' My advice would be either - do a set up and reward the dog for behaving properly (remember if this was at night, shadows cast weird pictures to dogs too) or take note of what has happened.... ride it for a bit and see if he offers the same response.... if he does- then work on getting your dog used to the situation. does that help more?

Which Dog Is Dominant?
leopuppy04 replied to shoemonster's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
yep i'm a firm believer in that if one misbehaves, then they both go in (i'm not talking about OTT here - if Molly is just OTT then she just needs a 'time out'.... I do this with Kinta too). There is nothing worse than people who put one dog away after an 'episode' and wonder why the problem isn't being solved..... dogs like kids can work out that 'stealing' the toy results in the other dog being put away. Yeah - my same additude about the crates shoey - its never punishment - just a 'time out'.... that was the word I was looking for ! My two play keepings off too - which I allow... but I don't allow any 'serious' growling or snapping ... I think it has only happened once.... If it happens in the park - I just put both dogs into a drop, release and then drop them again a few secs later.... release and let them go (without the toy for a few mins).
