Gomez Is Afraid Of The Kitchen...
Tonymc replied to Gomez the Norfolk's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Gomez, what age is the Dog?Myself I would not be concerned at all.Its important to be very casual and nonchalant yourself. When the Dog gets into the fearful behaviour, ignore it totally.Ignore the behaviour act casual and the Dog will come around. Tony -
This Dog also needs more stimulation. Tony

Getting A Pup And All The Obedience Clubs Are Closing!

Jules, along the lines of what Cosmolo said, why not put an add in your local paper seeking like minded People with the same objective that you have for your pup. Tony -
Training Different Dogs And Different Sports
Tonymc replied to JulesP's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Jules, instead of looking at the whole picture at once break it down into pieces.Take a piece at a time and its nowhere near as overwhelming. Work out a written timetable for a week, then just do what you have to on that day. Tony -
Breeding Obed/agilty Titled Dogs Together
Tonymc replied to Yarrowfell's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
It is no mystery why people like K9 and others over the years find it harder and harder to attain suitable Dogs for their lines of work. Modern day breeding has damaged many Dogs, through dogs being bred soley on appearance and never tested.Drive needs to be bred for but cannot be measured just by a Dog"s appearance!!!!The Dog has to be tested to reveal his or her drive level. Too many breed low drive to low drive and very soon we have high drive dogs becoming scarce. Tony -
Vickie, great article and well written by Tim. I wish breeders of other Breeds would follow the same vigilance when breeding. If other Breeds were also tested as these Dogs are, they would be so much better for it and we would not have dogs being dumbed down. I am afraid with some Breeders, the statement we are improving the breed is hollow and empty. One cannot rely on appearance only for an improvement.Like producing a new Car,claiming its an improvement but never testing it. GSD,an example of an intrinsic would be a Dog chasing a ball. Tony -
Intrinsic/extrinsic Reinforcement/punishment
Tonymc replied to GSD FAN's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Extrinsic reinforcement is from an external source such as the Dogs trainer.Intrinsic is the opposite due to it being internal within the dog itself. Tony -
Nicole,I would do as Anita said initially and basically ignore as this will not put any pressure on the Dog.I would not get too worried about the Bowl business. Anita, that is a very very good Analogy, your Swamp Monster. Tony

Chloe,as others have said separate the washing and the Pup.The Pup is only doing what comes naturally and acting on Prey Drive. Tony

Leigh,as Rachelle said I would be getting back to Steve on this. Tony

Jules firstly observe the drive level of Dog and Bitch. When you approach pups look for Pups that are active, outgoing and curious.I always watch the Pups who out and about exploring ahead of the rest. Also one can drag a piece of cloth around at Pups level, gently simulating a prey item and see which pups switch on. BBNZ,many people without being aware of it teach their Dog to pull when on a lead. You have the Dog on the lead and away you go.The Dog is keen to go and starts to pull. Then you pull back against the Dog but your still moving forward in the direction the dog wants to go.This teaches the Dog "If I pull I will get to where I want to go. I would ask does the Dog know how to get release of pressure. One method is tostart off walking the Dog with a lead at least 6 Ft long or better.Start off in the direction you wish to go.leave the Lead slack and obvisouly in this case the Dog will head off infront of you. When the Dog has just about run out of lead, turn around and quickly walk the other way.The Dog will experience a shock or jolt from the Lead and will then turn around and see only your back and you moving away. The Dog will of course want to catch with up you, which she will do.As she catches up as soon as she moves into position beside you where you want her, praise her. Then she will of course want to go ahead again. When she moves ahead again, repeat the exercise and again praise her when she is where you want her to be. Doing this exercise will not cure Her in five minutes. You will need to be consistent until the habit changes. You are just teaching the Dog that if she stays beside you it is a comfort zone. Tony

Halti Brand Head Collars?
Tonymc replied to Elizabeth Tasmania's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Elizabeth,I am no fan of Halters for Dogs.Halters are terrific for Horses but Dogs of course have a totally different structure. Many people wack a Halti on a Dog and think he or she due to their response is trained. In my view all the Halti does is provide a source of discomfort to the Dog.Take the Halti off and go back to a Flat Collar for a while and there is a big big chance the dog will revert to old behaviour. An analogy would be this. You have a cut on your left arm which is bothering you.Somebody comes along and tells you they can fix your problem. So they put a much bigger cut in your right arm.The bigger cut in your right arm certainly takes your mind off the cut in your left Arm, but really does nothing to solve the real problem. K9force Dog Handler/training Course
Tonymc replied to Griffo's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Moon, why not send Steve a pm.He"s a pretty good fella and will soon advise you whats avalible. Tony -
I see where K9 is coming from.I too really wonder about the statement inregard of behavioural issues of contacting the Breeder. Many seem to throw it out as a Blanket solution to a problem. That might be fine fine if the Breeder has extensive behavioral knowledge, but not all do. Folks this is the real World here.Nobody is saying let the situation ride, but a bit of reality is missing here.Nobody but the Owner can choose to get help or not to get help.Nobody but the owner can choose to rehome or not rehome!!!That is the reality!!!
