I'm rather partial to bloodhounds but I much prefer the tricolour markings of my basset so I'd put a bloodhound through photoshop LOL. Of course I'd never undertake any ridiculous crossbreeding to make it happen, it's all in fun. I just wish there was a taller hound that still had the ears and the looks but in a different colour Anyone else have a little tweak they'd like to do?

Cleo Just Scared Me So Much!
kelpiecuddles replied to dotdashdot's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Sascha did something similiar a while ago, the girls had dinner and then my oldest child in his wisdom was rlling the ball down the hallway for her. I stopped him because she'd just eat and ten minutes later she was looking miserable and about 5 minutes later she threw up her dinner and was all good again! -
Our old dog's best friend was the cat. the cat was killed in an accident in the yard and the dog saw it happen. He moped in the bottom corner of the yard for nearly a week before he would start coming up and getting back to his old self.

It could be the food but some dogs do just have a certain scent about them. Hounds are known to have a 'houndy smell' that is distinct from other breeds. Josie certainly has a smell of her own that is slightly different to the kelpie, it's not unpleasant just part of who she is.

Where are you heading to BoxerB?

I'd take the opportunity next time she comments about him being lame and do what hippo said and ask if the vet had any suggestions, if she says no or doesn't comment about the weight you could always say very innocently "have you tried reducung his weight to see if it makes any difference?" If she starts the conversation she can't be upset when you contribute to it.

Having looked at the breeder listings I think your best approach would be to contact the breeders you like, tell them a bit about yourself and then be patient. The breeder listings read to me like most of their puppies would not end up being advertised because they have a good private list of people waiting.

Would you consider an older one? http://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/mature/shiba-inu.asp?state= It would be an extremely expensive process getting one from puppyfind since it is a US site.

Exactly what Korbin said. My kids have spent their entire lives around animals and are about as trained as kids can be around animals, my daughter is the only small child in the street who my neigbours nervous cattle dog will actually happily approach for a pat. However I still don't allow interaction without a reasonable level of supervision. I have a little fence across the dogs sleeping area that means no one can accidentally upset them while sleeping, they are fed out on the patio and the kids will feed them under my guidance but are then instructed to leave them alone while they eat. My kids also understand(and have done since they were only small toddlers) that the logical consequence of hurting or scaring an animal is that you are likely to be bitten, I think this knowledge gives them a healthy respect for the personal space of animals.

Can you section off a little section of one room with a toddler pen or similiar and put soft blankets in there as a safe place to put Ares while he recovers from a seizure? That way the other dog can still be close to him but not close enough to upset him.

I'll hype them up later and video tape them for you :D She's nearly knocked me over a few times because she doesn't really look where she is going when she is engrossed in plpay and tends to just run straight through things LOL

Also while American Bulldogs may not fall under ANKC breed lists they do have their own version of breed standard and pedigrees which breeders are working towards. I'd be looking at your dog and the other dog with a very critical eye before deciding whether you feel breeding them would be of benefit to the breed.

My two are much like your, the kelpies style is lie Hanks whereas the basset has a boofhead play style more like the bulldog. Both of them will play much more gently with puppy.

In all fairness Leah a 2 year old would not understand what it means that the dog is shy, even less so if the child hasn't been trained to be around dogs. A better option would have been to seperate the two if you weren't there to personally watch them if the parents of the child weren't interested in supervising.

Cat Having Kittens (smell)
kelpiecuddles replied to Loreley's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
A rescue cat I had many years ago had her kittens in my bedroom cupboard, no particular smell that I can remember? -
I have strongly suspected for a while that the reason most people think my kelpie is so much younger than she is is due to her being quite lean. She's 9 1/2 but most people we meet are quite surprised when i tell them that and had guessed her age as being 2-5 years. It concerns me that the average person just assumes it is normal for a dog of Sascha's age to be fat.

Lickety Stik: Reward With Lick Of Good Taste
kelpiecuddles replied to sandgrubber's topic in General Dog Discussion
I've seen them but I think there were concerns about dogs trying to bite them and ending up with the ball down their throat. Probably OK though if you have the sort of dog that doesn't try to grab the treats forcefully. -
I spent time in the Daintree while studying, after watching the removal of 5 leeches from peoples eyes I'll have to respectfully disagree on that point...

It's a small price to pay for living somewhere so lovely :D

We get a lot of people at my work looking for ways to reduce their animals weight. In most cases with a few questions it becomes clear the treats are the issue(usually it seems to be one member of a couple doing the treating and the other worrying about the dog's weight LOL). I have had a lot of people say they just can't stop their other half from giving the dog treats during the day, the problem then of course is that they are still getting a full size meal as well. I advise them to get a container and to put the dogs entire days ration of food in to that. if someone wants to give the dog a treat it comes out of that container, no outside treats allowed. At the end of the day whatever is left in the container is dinner, even if it's only a couple of bits of kibble. If the dog has eaten everything in that container over the course of the day then they don't need more for dinner!

Yep, just keep an eye on them. As long as they only get a bit of a mild belly ache i wouldn't be too worried.

Much the same as my kelpie tdierikx, she's more portly than I would like now but still has a good shape. Mostly at the moment it's due to less exercise because of my husband being away and me working long hours and home in the dark over winter. I've reduced her food intake somewhat to compensate but she still needs to be run a bit more. I worry about people thinking my basset is too skinny, a lean basset has a very pronounced waist due to having broad shoulders and a broad bum so she looks very skinny in the middle as a result but as I can only just see her last rib I'm happy. I have had people who 'know' comment on how nice it is to see a slim basset rather than a wheezing over weight one.

They never stopped here, in August I would be picking 4 or 5 off me after i gardened. The dogs have been treated for ticks over winter this year.

What about just getting an old emaljunga pram cheap and passing it on once she no longer needs it, they are a bit more enclosed than you average pram and could work quite well.
