She might struggle with a Wheaten, they are lot bigger than her other options and are quite stubborn and wilful, need a fair bit of exercise too. Beautiful dogs but not for the faint hearted!

I hope he's still receiving vet care! If not then the RSPCA needs to step in. -

Cootamundra might be a bit far from KCC though, by about 6 hours LOL -
Nsw Bushfires - For Newbie Members!
kelpiecuddles replied to Brandiandwe's topic in General Dog Discussion
I'm home with the chooks and my parrots so at least there are no animals at the property now. I don't think we'd be impacted but things can change so quickly. I could see the glow not far away... -
Thanks for the feedback guys, might give it a try. With my staff discount I can get it for about $80 for 20kg which is a lot cheaper than the euk!

Nsw Bushfires - For Newbie Members!
kelpiecuddles replied to Brandiandwe's topic in General Dog Discussion
It's not near where I live, just where the chooks are. I've just found some boxes and I'm gonna race down there and get them -
Nsw Bushfires - For Newbie Members!
kelpiecuddles replied to Brandiandwe's topic in General Dog Discussion
They've just announced a new one near our rural property down here, I'm sitting here trying to decide whether it's close enough to our property to warrant going and collecting the chooks or whether they should be OK.... -
Not necessarily, they've only had one bag of the Eukanuba so i'm not entirely settled on it yet and if I can get something good quality that is a bit more affordable for me as well then that's just a bonus.

How much do you feed your BCs per day? Would be pretty comparable to my kelpie so would give me a good idea I think
-
In terms of prepackaged treats I'm pretty sure the new treat range from Purina is aussie made and maybe the blackdog ones?
-
My dogs are currently eating Eukanuba but my work has just started stocking Blackhawk. The Blackhawk works out a lot cheaper per kilo for me to buy but I'm wondering if anyone has any feedback on whether I should switch? In terms of feeding volume how do the two compare?

Breeds That Are Least Prone To Health Problems
kelpiecuddles replied to a topic in General Dog Discussion
Widely used working breeds would be a reasonable bet. Obviously no breed is immune to health issues but kelpies from sound lines are very robust. I honestly could count on one hand the number of times in her 9 years that my kelpie has been to the vet for anything other than a vaccination. That said my 5yr old basset hasn't been for any reason other than vacs either, she was very carefully chosen from lines I felt would offer the least health issues. -
This Might Be A Stupid Question But Are Fleas Penalized
kelpiecuddles replied to mixeduppup's topic in General Dog Discussion
Apart from anything else there's a reasonable chance they'd be penalising themselves. A dog that's crawling in fleas is likely to be uncomfortable and an uncomfortable dog isn't going to present as well as a happy, itch free one! -
This Might Be A Stupid Question But Are Fleas Penalized

What TLC said, not an exhibitor/breeder I would touch with a ten foot pole if they can't bother to deflea their animals! -
Training Questioned By Trainer
kelpiecuddles replied to mumof4girls's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I do exactly the same things with my dogs, doesn't seem odd to me at all. Means they know that having that freedom is only when mum says so and when I call them back they go back in to heel or sit. -
haha, yes that's definite downside although Josie isn't too bad. I chose for a conservative level of wrinkliness, it was actually a priority in my choice of breeder and I think that has been a very good choice as the drool is there but not overwhelming and she doesn't have any issues with eyes or skin folds.

Halti For Training?
kelpiecuddles replied to Poodle wrangler's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Just put it on and quietly attach the lead to the collar, their policy says they have to wear a halti, doesn't say you have to actually use it... -
Hi guys, I'm after a bit of inside info from the tracking/trailing folks :D Hubby and I have decided, after much discussion, that our planned entry in to dog breeding in a few years time will be with the specific aim to breed bassets(always our intended breed) for tracking(man trailing) work. I'm a member of the emergency services and attend a lot of searches for persons missing in bushland areas. There are a few dogs that are cleared to be used in our service for this kind of work but there are so few of them that they just aren't available when needed or within close enough proximity. I'd love to start by training the first few myself for more local work since missing persons are sadly common in this area due to dense bush and the demographic of older people in the care of relatives or in semi-independent living. After that we'll look to partially or fully train dogs and handlers and place them further afield with other service families who are willing to be a part of the project. It's a big undertaking and it will be many years and quite a bit of money before we are 'rolling out' our first dogs but all plans must start somewhere! So this is where you guys come in! At the moment my research can only be online since I am in the short term on my own with small children, therefore I can't get out easily to go and attend doggy events. I'd love any info from people in the tracking world who may have seen bassets at events regarding kennels that are doing well in tracking or that are well regarded in the tracking set. Of course I will be doing my own research too but I always feel with things of this type that you often learn more through word of mouth. :) I'm also very fond of bloodhounds and may consider delving in to that breed further down the track but I felt bassets would be more suited to this specific project due to their shorter size being less overwhelming for a lost/injured person who may be lying on the ground when found(especially if that person was a child) Happy to receive info via PM ETA: In case anyone was wondering I have mentioned this plan to those high up in my organisation and they have no problems with it if I put the dogs through the appropriate testing and titling.
