Minimum Age For Sale Of Pups In Qld
kelpiecuddles replied to Boronia's topic in General Dog Discussion
Probably just being optimistic Yonjuro I pointed out the age minimum to someone selling underage kittens on a FB page a week ago and also politely explained the health and behavioural issues they can have as a result and his response was "oh well I don't think it's that big a deal" and he'd given them all away pretty soon because apparently no one else cared either I've lived with a cat who was given away too early and she was a nightmare, I'd never do that again -
After being cleared by a full vet check up if it is just a high metabolism she could try something like satin balls and maybe look at whether the food she is currently using suits that particular dog. My kelpie could eat anything and be fine but I once bought supercoat to feed my girls for a week until I could get their regular food and the weight just fell off my basset and she looked dreadful, many others happily feed supercoat to their dogs and their dogs do well on it. Now I'm feeding her Blackhawk and she look brilliant on it but others have had trouble

Clarifying Something On Prefix Application
kelpiecuddles replied to kelpiecuddles's topic in General Dog Discussion
That's what I thought it sounded like too LOL. I'm thinking they meant it as in the intended dam(mother) OR the bitch you intend to mate, still superfluous but at least makes sense -
I was looking to fill out the application form to get my prefix however the form indicates I need to own my foundation bitch first, is this correct? It could potentially take me a number of years to find the sort of dog I'm looking for and I really would prefer to get my prefix sorted so that I know what it is for sure and can start developing my plans. Can anyone confirm whether I can actually apply for a prefix without having my foundation bitch already in my ownership? This is the excerpt: Theoretically I suppose I could put Josie on there as she is female, the right breed and on mains in my name but she is desexed so technically I shouldn't because I won't be breeding her.

Just wondering whether anyone shows at the gong and con recommend accommodation? To start with we won't have any dogs of our own so that's not an issue yet but down the track we will need dog friendly accommodation.

It's not shame and embarrassment you should feel Skyefool, peoples concern comes out of a warm fuzzy place of caring and shared interests. If this site helps you with whatever you are going through then please don't leave.

In all fairness though that's an 8 month old dog who has never been taught to be alone suddenly stuck in a backyard all day. This isn't an issue caused by the owner but one caused by the breeder not giving that dog the opportunity to learn that apart is OK sometimes.

I'm sorry Clyde but I'm not going to live my life in a state of constant paranoia over the highly unlikely chance that some nutter is lurking outside a busy, populated IGA in a rural city on the Hume Hwy waiting to grab my son in the five minutes he is sitting on the pavement with my dogs, mostly within my sight. My children get a lot less freedom than most of the children around where we live, where children as young as 4 are often riding their bikes around the neighbourhood unsupervised, something even my 9 year old isn't allowed to do, I also don't leave them home alone which many parents around here do. I do believe in allowing my children to develop independence and responsibility as they get older and this is a small way I can do that where the risks are low. How you wish to parent is up to you but around here if our older kids want to work they have to catch a bus for 30 minutes, ride their bikes or similar so they do need to be able to be confident in their ability to be alone for short periods. The reality is that 99.9% of people are nice, ordinary people who are just going about their business and most assaults on children are perpetrated by someone they know, I won't spend my days angsting over that less than .1% who may or may not be walking the streets. At any rate this is completely off topic.

He's pretty big and very independent for his age but it's definitely not my preferred strategy hence why I'd rather leave them in the car when travelling. Sometimes on a hot day though when you have to stop in a small town to get supplies there of course aren't covered car parks there.

oh good, would have made travelling complicated. On hot days I get the dogs out and my nine year old will sit with them while I run in but I don't really like doing that.

Nacho Doesn't Like His Crate All Of A Sudden
kelpiecuddles replied to moosepup's topic in General Dog Discussion
Dunno about that, I recall a lot of laughter the other day regarding a certain persons greyhound who made itself at home on the bed... :p -
Sascha completely ripped her nail off a while back leaving just the quick. Don't cut it as it will bleed like crazy! I would use a little bandaging tape to wrap around it and hold the nail together so it's less likely to get pulled apart and then put a sock over his foot. When it happened to Sascha I spoke to my neighbour who happens to be the head nurse at our local vet clinic and she agreed with me that there was nothing to be done but keep it clean, keep her quiet and wait for it to regrow...she wore an explorer sock for a week. if it's split right down the middle the vet may want to try to remove some of the claw but I wouldn't try anything yourself.

Weird question, can you still be charged if there is no danger of the car heating up? For example we often travel interstate and if we stop for supplies part way we always park in an cool underground car park or if it's 10 degrees and pouring with rain I'll happily leave them in the car while I go in for five minutes to get what I need, never when there is even a slight danger of the car getting even warm let alone hot. I feel they are safer there than tied up outside the shop(especially having an uncommon breed)

Preparing For Next Weeks Severe To Extreme Heat...
kelpiecuddles replied to westiemum's topic in General Dog Discussion
The heat that day was incredible, I had thermometers out under our patio that day(we were w ten minutes drive from the Diamond Creek evac shelter) and they were reading 54 at one point. I had all our animals inside the house and it was still close to 40 in the house as we didn't have air con, that was a horrible few days even before the loss of home and life so close to us. -
A friend of mine called the police on someone that did this a couple of weeks ago, the response was great, the shopping centre security stayed at the car keeping a close eye on the dog to ensure it didn't get distressed and were ready to break a window if they felt it was needed and the police were waiting for the owner when they came back to the car. Great to see such a response.

Nowra Area Peeps-who Was At The Dragon Boats?
kelpiecuddles replied to kelpiecuddles's topic in General Dog Discussion
We did come for a little while but the kidlets were being painful and not making it very relaxing so I gave up LOL, we went to Culburra Beach for the sandcastle competitions and a play in the water afterwards and then home to mow the lawn :D -

That's pretty much what I have, we bought some cheap irrigation hose and mister fittings from bunnings and put them up in a loop around the patio with wire, that runs to a tap timer which goes for five minutes at a time, on hot days I usually set it to every two hours and I hang white cotton sheets around the patio so that they get wet when the mister goes and keep it cool for the next two hours with a bit of evaporative cooling. -

We used to have one of those plug in portable evaporative air cons that you fill with water, we used to put a bit of water in ours and then fill the rest with ice =awesome! -

I also have a timer on my patio watering system and on extremely hot days or when there is a high risk of fire and I won't be home I set it to turn on for five minutes every few hours, it wets down the patio and cools the air. -

Have you got a big freezer? You can fill icecream buckets and 2lt lemonade bottles with water and freeze them and put them at one end of their bed so they can lean against them. This is what we do for the small animals on hot days. -

Will they play in a paddle pool? -
Just wondering whether anyone knows where a person who admins a facebook buy and sell type page can be somehow charged(in theory because I'm sure they'd never pull their finger out to do it!) for allowing posts on their page selling underage pets? I placed a polite reply on someone's post who was giving away underage kittens(who looked to have ringworm as well but that's another issue), he didn't really care, although he at least had the decency to be polite in return. I'd like to message the site admin to push for them to include in the site rules that puppies and kittens must be 8 weeks but trying to get a bit of ammo to convince them if I can...

I hope so :) He has Asperger's/ADHD/hearing impaired but the upshot of this is that he's rather pedantic, pretty competitive, learns fast when he's interested in the topic and has a great eye for detail. He also asks a million questions which I don't mind because it's how he learns. I think he could be really committed little showie once we get him a dog. :)

Just make sure they use something like a square aviary type mesh not cheap chicken wire, the cheap chicken wire warps and becomes a pain in the arse with the mower, etc whereas if you pin the square mesh down nicely it will sit flat on the ground and you can just mow straight over it
