  1. Got a message from Sharon, sounds like things are under control for now :)
  2. Ticks wouldn't usually live inside a house, they need a vector like wildlife and hang out in scrub waiting for a warm body to go past. You can spray Permoxin around for ticks but it's not good for cats and I'd be tentative about spraying it around the garden as it will kill everything and it may or may not be OK for wildlife like possums.
  3. Going o head down to the op shop and see if they have any old belts hanging around
  4. Would transport to port Kembla help first thing tomorrow morning? Would have to fit in with me for a meet at 9am ish as I have an appointment. We could pick him up this arvo :)
  5. If anything can be done for today and tomorrow I could help for a little after that( or if we have anyone who can transport him to me tonight). Any chance of him being tested wih other dogs?
  6. We're in! I have to run now and do some last minute training with her and try to find a crappy old leather collar to put on her(they didn't have pretty purple nylon collars then :p ) but I promise I'll take photos, wish us luck for tomorrow!
  7. Thanks Mjosa, the dog I particularly like is a European import so you never know even if he's not on there some of his ancestry might be, might make for some interesting research!
  8. No link there unfortunately, just lots of lovely photos of him :p
  9. I'm researching lines and have found a dog who I just love the look of and I'd really like to know where his bloodlines have ended up. Short of emailing the owner and asking is there a way you can search pedigrees for this sort of info somehow?
  10. I don't think I'd use it long term but we treated Sascha's spay incontinence 8 years ago with a single course of oestrogen and it took until mid last year to re-occur and another single course seems to have settled it again. Seemed in her case that it was a case of needing her hormones 'reset' and that lasted for nearly 7 years!
  11. Maybe suggest Black Hawk, it's better than Supercoat but not as expensive as Pro Plan and my bag has lasted ages, I would say it would cost me about the same to feed Supercoat as my dogs only eat about half as much. One bag at about $95 has lasted nearly 8 weeks feeding a basset hound and a kelpie, I would easily have bought two $49 bags of Supercoat in that time as I feed much more to get the same nutritional value. It's not Pro Plan but it's still a great food and I would use it over Supercoat any day.
  12. I didn't see a single post where anyone was 'discussing' SLFs breeding issues, just a few people wishing her bitch a good recovery and safe delivery of her pups. It makes sense to put it in breeders so that people with breeding experience can offer advise without random know it alls offering their own advise when they don't really have the experience to do so BUT a lot of others would simply like to wish them well and that's all that happened here.
  13. My uncles Dachie was titled in endurance and did cross country and was certainly a very healthy example of the breed(and is from show lines). I had this conversation regarding bassets the other day and I'll say it didn't end well, although I was only suggesting that it would be possible to source healthy fit for purpose animals here from show lines(which you would think would be a good thing!). Show dogs are after all subject to the preferences of the person breeding them and their perception of the standard, some dogs are bred with so much excess skin they are practically tripping over it and if enough breeders and judges like that it becomes the look of the moment. I suspect dachies are the same, there will always be breeders who are breeding towards the more extreme parts of the standard but you'll also have the breeders who like the sturdy, healthy type which needs to be encouraged.
  14. I'm the same Wings, I hear about all the BYB bassets in the states and I hope the breed never goes that way here. When I tell people I have a basset the most common response is "Oh, does she have problems with her ears/back/skin" Most people are very surprised when I say that the only thing she's been to the vet for is vacs, desexing and one teeth cleaning and she's nearly 6. She's such a lovely bred girl and kept lean and fit but as a breed there are so many things that BYBer could screw up so quickly. All the dachies I've known would walk all over their owners if they let them!
  15. LOL, I do the same thing, work out what I want to say, go down the bottom and it's only when I see that the post box is missing I realise it's a breeders forum thread. I agree with the two things you mentioned
  16. Well der Remarkabull, dontcha know Pal does parachute food drops to wild dingoes, couldn't have them eating raw food could we!
  17. Just looked up that study. Given it was conducted in the USA and you pointed out that there are lots of BYB dachies there maybe it's an indicator of owner effort, poor breeding, poor early socialisation and other issues more than anything else.
  18. The people down the road from us used to have a awful, nasty little dachshund. Used to bite at your ankles and carry on, but my uncles standard dachshund was wonderful. The difference there was training if you ask me, I know the effort my family puts in to their dogs and it's a lot more than my old neighbours did! I've certainly met for more nice dachshunds than nasty ones.
  19. I found a reference somewhere from a top dobe lady in the states(think she was high up in the dobe club there) which stated that they should reach 3/4 of their adult weight by the time they are 6 months, which actually sounds about right given he's about half his adult weight at four months. I can't remember where I saw it but i'll have a look.
  20. My hound won't but she was trained that way LOL. She was lying in the middle of the yard with 3 day old chicks wandering near her face the other day
  21. Yep just let them know you are concerned and requesting a welfare check on an elderly person, they're always happy to help.
  22. Westiemum just call 000 anyway, they will put it in as a lower priority and the wait is a bit longer, they won't come under lights and sirens.
  23. Can I ask, how do you go teaching the dog to run next to the bike? I'm terrified to try lest the dog runs in front of the bike and sends us both flying ETA: All good, just found the link to the other thread
  24. If he prefers a cushion type bed I would go for something firmer, the more he sinks h=in the warmer he'll be. An inner spring cot mattress would work well as they are hollow
