  1. Velociraptor works, You've got Cira (pronounced sirra) as a pretty shortening for a girl or Loci or Raptor which work well for a boy :) ETA an afterthought. Velicoraptor actually makes sense given they were actually feathered as are many dog breeds :D (The 'velociraptors' in movies llike Jurrasic Park are more like another closely related group Deinonychus.) This is information I learn from my daughter LOL
  2. I would think so as he can go at his own pace. I'd find a club that's happy to understand that you aren't doing it to win any speed tracking records :p , just for a bit of fun. :) You could also try some other types of scent training.
  3. Rather than paddlepop sticks can I suggest some box cardboard, the type that is double layered, rolled in to a cylinder around the dislocated bit, then as T said wrap the whole tail. If you run the corrugations inside the cardboard parralel to the tail they'll stop the card from bending too much and less likely to slip around than paddlepop sticks :)
  4. Oh Maeby i think Hamish, Albert(Albie) and Rupert might also be a rather awesome basset hound names. George this time for sentimental reasons but I think some of those might appear down the track!
  5. My mum has a set near her house in Mordialloc in Melbourne(all pretty solid stuff though as GeorgieB said). The Shoalhaven has just recieved grants to have permanent public agility facilities built in two locations, one at the Milton showground and one at the Nowra showground. :) looking forward to seeing them built
  6. Well there you go, I always assumed the brittany only came in orange and white as that's all i had ever seen, I just looked up the standard and learnt something new!
  7. It's interesting that so many can't pick a name before knowing the pup. Can I also ask if it makes a difference if you know basically what the dog will look like or whether you rescue? I can imagine that if i was getting a rescue dog or a breed with lots of variation in colour, etc that I might have more trouble settling on a name early but bassets are pretty well all basically the same look, there's only a couple of different colour forms and in a litter between two tricolours you basically end up with lots of very similiar coloured pups. If I pic just about any random pic of a basset hound from the web such as the one below I find it quite easy to imagine it being called George LOL (although I think this one might be a girl but if she is she's a fairly solid one)
  8. A friend of mine from many years ago named her son Dougal, gorgeous name and I'd love to use it but I'd probably be accused of naming him after the dog from The Magic Roundabout(childrens TV show for those who aren't regularly inflicted with ABC kids shows)
  9. I'll be disappointed if it doesn't take but then I'll just wait again, I've chosen this breeding for a very specific reason :)
  10. I like the girls name Georgie but it doesn't work with the reason he's getting that name, could only use it on a boy. ;) My husband doesn't know I've chosen that name or the registered name I've chosen and both were picked specifically due to his long held desire to have a boy dog called George as a result of something from his childhood so I'm going to organise it and surprise him with the name and show name which go together :)
  11. I think I may be a little strange as our next puppy isn't even a twinkle in the eye of the bitch who will be it's mother yet but I'm already completely set on what his name will be  I figured there would probably be plenty of others in DOL world who are just as weird so share yours! I've even picked a name for his show name but due to paranoia over someone else using it I won't share that :p Our next one will be a basset called George The litter is already planned and he'll come out of an amazing pairing, just got to wait for her to come in to season now! The only thing that might get in the way is if the one that is picked for us turns out to be a girl but hopefully there will be a nice male puppy for us. :)
  12. Might have just been that he was standing on muddy ground in the first shot :)
  13. Yes, if he's not identified as a dingo X on his registration and is a friendly, well adjusted family dog I'd just identify him as a kelpie x or whatever else he looks most like. Unfortunately if he's registered on his chip as a dingo X then it's probably risky.
  14. We get a lot of the people who bought the pup without really thinking it through coming in to my work looking for a magical training aid that with 'fix' their dog for them. . The latest was an elderly lady who had bought a kelpie puppy because many years ago she had a border collie and recalled it being a good dog... The 4 month old pup was definitely smarter than her ;) I did try a few walking aids on her as it was pretty obvious the pup would end up at the pound if something wasn't done. In the end a sporn seemed to be well accepted by the little fella and she was much happier walking him then. I gave her a quick demo on how to use it as a transitional tool to end up with him loose leash walking and gave her some advice on the way she was interacting with him(was giving him mixed signals and not being clear with her commands) and I pointed her in the direction of a great local trainer I know. I really hope she gets some help and he ends up being a good doggie for her.
  15. http://www.pir.sa.gov.au/biosecuritysa/nrm_biosecurity/pest_animal/pest_animal_policies/policy_on_management_of_dingo_populations_in_sa I wouldn't risk it
  16. We looked after someones dobe for a while, she was a gorgeous dog but very bouncy and I guess you would say spirited. Lol. I could definitely imagine it being hard to ask a young dobe to contain all that boisterous energy enough to have the level of 'chillness' I like around kids
  17. Yes Terri I am feeling that myself. My next one will be a working animal, trained in a role that I don't actually have a lot of experience in myself and I'm already just a little terrified
  18. Toilet training a breed that can be a tad stubborn ain't fun, but I reckon the thing that will worry me most with my next puppy will be whether it grows to suit the purposes I am getting it for.
  19. Most basset are shown very much on the heavier end of a healthy weight range. I've seen photos of a excellent breeders champion dog in similar weight to what I keep my girl and in the sort of weight I would need to have my girl in order to compete in the ring and you wouldn't have even known they were the same dog. This breeder and I had an interesting discussion about it at the time.
  20. I was going to teeter along the beach with Donatella I our sky high strappy heels and short skirts, she could have carried her muderanian. Now what will we do!?
  21. That's why I couldn't move to the Gold Coast, I tried to put my basset under one arm and the kelpie under the other and then I realised that it was going to be too hard to carry them plus my fake Versace handbag while putting on my hot pink lip gloss so I had no choice but to stay here.
  22. I am more than happy to put forward basset hounds as being amazing dogs for families with young children. In general they adore kids, have wonderful even temperaments, are family oriented and although not what I would call obedience champs they will happily learn the rules of the house and follow them and for me that's the main thing. :). They have a similar temperament to a beagle but a little less of the hyperactivity that can get some beagle owners in to trouble. Lol. Like a beagle they are scent hounds so not suited to running off lead unless on a fairly contained area(we take ours to a dog beach which is enclosed along the length but open on one end for example).
  23. Also she came out of a very big litter so she could possibly still be in that 'got to compete with the litter mates' mindset depending on how they were feeding them.
  24. and maybe some meaty bones to keep her busy between meals so that she doesn't feel like she's desperate to eat constantly
  25. Wow they are full on loony on that page! They wonder why vegans get a bad rap when they have people suggesting that they should make up stickers that say, "I'm an ***hole, I eat murder victims" and put them on the backs of people eating meat in public! I don't care what anyones choices are in life(as long as they don't hurt others) and I'm always more than happy to cater to peoples dietary needs where possible but they are full on nuts!
