Ex Battery Hens Looking For Homes
kelpiecuddles replied to Pawfect's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Unfortunately your probably preaching to the converted here. Coles no longer has cage eggs under their own You'll Love Coles brand name which I think is a step in the right direction, if other companies phased out having cage eggs in their range then those who buy whatever's the cheapest would just start buying the cheapest of the barn/free range anyway. -

Of course! There are egg warehouses all over the place and there are always chooks in need from them. If you were planning on getting some from this lot and have missed out do a google and find out what other chook farms are in your area. if you have a local poultry club they may be able to point you in the direction of someone who rescues chooks in your area -

Why Do Dogs Like To Be Wet & Muddy?

Oh wow! Think I might have to start collecting gumboots, I'd love a couple of these hiding in the corner of the garden! -
'available For Adoption' Dog Coats?

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. MTD is kindly going to embroider one for me when she is back in town. Now to trawl through my sewing room and decide what base fabric to use. :) -
Why Is It Funny For A Dog To Be Aggressive

Surely in a show environment it would be a pain in the arse to have a dog that behaves badly, seems like a huge reason to ensure your dog was well adjusted! I get that some people do everything in their power and still have to work really hard and that I don't mind, it's the ones who do nothing because they think they shouldn't have to that get me. -
I haven't been on here in a few years but I do remember this happening. Very sad

I must admit I'm at the vets so often for other things I'd love to be able to do my own vaccs to save a few dollars. When I have taken mine for vaccs the vet hasn't really done any health check stuff anyway so I'm only really paying for five minutes of needle and paperwork

Changing A Puppy's Pooping Schedule
kelpiecuddles replied to andrewang's topic in General Dog Discussion
Piggy, eat all the time puppies need to be moderated though lest they become piggy, porky dogs as adults, eating twice a day won't hurt him at his age. Personally I'd be sleeping him in the crate, I think that would be your best shot at breaking the night pooping thing altogether and if he doesn't poop he can't eat it so it solves that problem anyway. -

'available For Adoption' Dog Coats?

I'm happy to make my own, I'd like to get it embroidered nice and bold though. Might have to do a bit of a trawl for someone that can embroider for me at a good price if I send them the cut fabric piece before I put the jacket together. -
Does anyone know where I could get either a premade dog coat with something to the effect of "I'm looking for my new forever home" or "I'm available for adoption" on it? Alternatively I actually do make my own dog coats so if anyone knows where i could get something embroidered that would also work :)

To some extent I think it can come down to luck too. My kelpie suffered from continence issues after desexing but she wasn't done until 6 months

Anything that can make him use his brain is a good thing. Try thinking about him as a dingo as weird as that sounds, they scavenge as they go and will even climb into small trees, etc to retrieve food items. If you can make things, bury things, put treats in wierd places where he needs to think in order to get them out then all that will do two things, it will keep him busy and it will make him think which will help to tire him out.
-
What about making some home made things for him to destroy, atleast that won't cost you an arm and a leg. - paper rolls filled with treated and taped up with masking tape - lemonade bottles with frozen low salt chicken stock and a few holes punched in them - A small sandpit with little treats buried through it for digging - A big handful of kibble sprinkled across the whole yard so he has to hunt for the bits - give him a frozen marrow bone so it takes longer to get through it(if he doesn't choke on a barbecue wheel he really is unlikely to choke on a large bone) - A trip to the op shop for some 50 cent teddies :D -combined with a few heavy duty kongs and some cheap rope toys that can be affordably replaced when they are destroyed. just remember that however much he gets as treats during the day forms part of his daily diet, so reduce his other meal/s

Why Is It Funny For A Dog To Be Aggressive
kelpiecuddles replied to lovemesideways's topic in General Dog Discussion
My daughter was bitten on the face by a maltese. She was doing everything right, she asked the owner whether the dog was ok to pat and then offered her hand for the dog to smell as she has always been taught. All seemed OK and she took a step closer to reach to pat the little dog on the back and it leapt forward and bit her. The owner did seem a little shocked but he didn't take any steps to correct the dog or apologise, didn't even ask if she was ok. Makes it hard to teach your children to do the right thing by other peoples dogs when other people have so little regard for their animals behaviour and emotional stability. -

Could you bring all his meals forward by a couple of hours? Or, if he is old enough, move to doing two meals a day at morning and lunch. -
Your Preferred Flea/tick Treatment
kelpiecuddles replied to kelpiecuddles's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Has anyone used Permethrin concentrate made up in a spray bottle for ticks? It says on the bottle to spray weekly for ticks, just wondering how effective it would be. I thought maybe I could make a bottle up and keep it with the leads and give her a spray when we are heading out for a walk 'offroad' -
Looking At A Small To Medium Size Dog
kelpiecuddles replied to ridgiemum's topic in General Dog Discussion
I have a basset hound and she fits that description quite well other than maybe being bigger than you wanted(she's about 18kg but short obviously), although she is a small basset I am told. She is happy to just chill with her people most of the time and a bit of an amble and she's sorted, a 5 minute run with the kelpie and she's just about collapsing! She's not massively intelligent like my kelpie but she easily trained all the important things which was the main thing for us. Bassets get a bad rap as barkers but we worked on that from day one and she only barks now if there is roos over the back fence. I always say that they are all the happy of the beagle but with a bit less of the loony and they can't jump fences! -
Your Preferred Flea/tick Treatment
kelpiecuddles replied to kelpiecuddles's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Just to be clear, up until now I have only used it occasionally as I didn't feel there was another GOOD option. Her being slightly irritated and grumpy for a few days is preferable to death because I missed a tick when checking her. I pulled four ticks off myself the other day and I'm not covered in fur to make them hard to find. -
Your Preferred Flea/tick Treatment
kelpiecuddles replied to kelpiecuddles's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I think it irritates her skin somehow, she gets quite agitated and when we were using it every two weeks she was quite upset all the time and would snap at our other dog any time she came near, etc. We stopped using it and she became our happy girl again. It's obvious she doesn't like it because if she sees a pipette now she will run and hide in the yard and not be called over. -
Your Preferred Flea/tick Treatment
kelpiecuddles replied to kelpiecuddles's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
That's why I don't use it unless I absolutely need to. The frontline isn't really regarded as being particularly effective around here -
Just wondering what everyone's preferred preventative for fleas and ticks is? Is there anything other than advantix or frontline as my kelpie seems to have a reaction to the advantix and the frontline gets a bad rap around here so not sure it's worth spending money on it. I've been using the advantix on the basset and putting it on the kelpie if we are going somewhere with a very large risk of ticks but I can't use it on her all the time as she gets quite upset over it. I'm also trying to work out what to use on the cat for fleas if anyone has any suggestions on the feline side of things..
