Oh wow how gorgeous is he! When do you get to bring him home?

Why would anyone judge you for rescueing this little family and doing everything in your power to help them. You have done a great thing.

Oh poor darling, look how skinny she is Might be worth giving the pups some supplementary feeds so that she has a chance to recover herself.

A lady came in to my work today and we were talking about dogs and she told me that she a while ago she had been in the pet shop in town and they had sold her a jack russell X puppy as a companion for her elderly mother and told her that because it was a small dog it would just sleep on the couch all day and potter around with her Understandably the reality has not been at all like this and the pup eventually had to move in with this lady as her mother just couldn't keep up with it and it kept jumping on her legs and she was worried it would trip her over. It was a real mess and the lady was very upset that she had been taken in by the pet shop (but she doesn't mind that she has the dog now and all credit to her wouldn't get rid of him, he just wasn't suited to her mum). Her mother would still like to have a dog but clearly a puppy isn't right for her so I told her about rescue, how it worked, etc and suggested that an older dog might suit her well. She was blown away as she had never heard of anything other than the pound and when I explained that the rescue would work with them to place a dog that would suit, etc she was thrilled with the idea. Sooo.... she has my number, she's going to talk to her mum and if her mum is keen as well she is going to give me a call and I'd love to be able to give her some contacts to talk to that might have something that might suit. I know it is often hard to place older dogs so seemed like an opportunity not to be passed up! Her mum is pretty quiet, potters down to the shops and around home, I suspect a small breed quiet middle age/older dog is what they would be after.

It sounds like she was in such a bad way that the only way she could survive at that point was to eat the pups, poor thing probably has no milk either if she's in a really bad way.

Thanks. I might just aim to do it when we come down in June -

I do still use it on her if I'm taking her in the bush around our place but I stretch it out so we don't use it too often. So I'll put it on and for the next couple of weeks we walk her in the bush areas, etc but after that I only walk her around the streets until the next time I put some on her. That way she's protected when she's most at risk but she has some time for it to wear off between uses, it's almost like there is a sort of threshold that it builds up to and then it drives her a bit nutty. -

I'm not sure what this vet was offering me as the last vaccs were done in Victoria. all I did was ring and ask how much they charged for a C5 and that was the answer. Maybe I'll ask again. -
Your Preferred Flea/tick Treatment
kelpiecuddles replied to kelpiecuddles's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
If we only use it very occasionally the affects seem to only last a day or so but before we realised the problems she was always agitated, would randomly snap at our other dog and always looked like she had her hackles half up(doing a fortnightly application). The pack ran out and we used some left over frontline for a short period and it stopped and when we went back to the advantix the issue started up again. I certainly don't think she is pain but it definately does affect her in a big way and doesn't have the same problem when we use other spot on brands. -

Cocker Spaniel Needs Help
kelpiecuddles replied to keetamouse's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Wow, I hope he was properly assessed prior to adoption and went to a home that understands his issues. I also hope that they disclosed fully his issues and didn't put him in a home with younger kids who might grab his collar without realising. -

She is already on that. They would have had their last one when we moved here which is about 2 1/2 years ago now. We don't hang out with a lot of other dogs and those who we do are healthy and vaxed but as we are about to start fostering i figured I'd organise their next booster and do the lot. -

To be honest I just can't afford the frontline spray. I use a third of a bottle every time I treat her because of her size and I have to do her every two weeks. It costs me a fortune that way. I am willing to trial the permoxin as there are two other ingredients in Advantix that may be at fault and her reaction isn't large enough for me to be concerned enough to not try it. -
dotdashdot I work in a pet store as well and actually asked the rep from one of the large premium brands whether he could get me a sample of a certain food(which I know they have samples of) because I wanted to trial my very fussy cat on it. He first refused to believe that I have had to use four other bags of branded premium food as dog treats because she would starve herself for six days rather than eat them. Then he tried to force me to use wet food which I refuse to do because she's a snacker and I don't want wet food sitting out all day. In the end I gave up and i won't be buying his brand at all. She's healthy and looks fabulous on Optimum so i guess that's where she'll stay for now!

Yep, Advantix is permoxin, it's the ingredient that messes cats up. I can buy permoxin liquid so I'm thinking that might be the go as long as that isn't the ingredient that messes the kelpie up too :) -

Tell me more goldielover, we bring the dogs to melbourne with us when we visit my parents, I'd happily hold off and do their booster when we are down next -
I've tried urine off, it seemed to work ok to start with but the smell came back after a while. Sadly I think we might just be up for replacing the carpet in one room when we leave this rental.

Appropriate Weight For Sighthounds
kelpiecuddles replied to SkySoaringMagpie's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I think you would also find that a lot of people have a slightly off centre opinion of what is the right weight for a dog or cat regardless of the breed. Most people tell me my kelpie looks just right now but to me she is fat, on a kelpie I like to see the last rib(which I definately can't at the moment ) The middle one in the first post look like fabulous condition for a lean sighthound like a saluki. When I was working as a vet nurse a lot of people would say they needed to fatten their dog up but to look at they were spot on, but the not very aware dog owning public seems to think just right=skinny. -
How Much Do You Pay For A C5?
kelpiecuddles replied to kelpiecuddles's topic in General Dog Discussion
I thought it sounded a little on the steep side. I paid $70 this morning for a a check up and for a wound to be trimmed and irrigated and the vet gave her a manicure as well, took a lot longer than a vax would have taken and needed the help of vet nurse, etc. She's just had a check up so I think I'll just do a ring around and go to whoever is the cheapest. This is one of those times I wish i could buy vaccs and just do it myself, too many vet visits lately! -
I'm sure at my old vet they were about $75 but I just called and this place is charging $108? Is this the normal price or do I need to shop around?

In that case if you can get your wire crate straight away just get it, puppies grow so fast and I don't actually know anyone who started with a really small crate and then got a bigger one a month later. Aussie's aren't tiny and they grow fast!
-
All that aside if you need something short term hunt garage sales for a baby play pen. You can usually pick them up second hand for next to nothing
-
Are you planning on buying a soft crate or a wire one? A wire one will be tough enough to stand up to pretty much any puppy stuff and you can put a canvas cover on it to make it look nicer. I trained straight into a large soft crate(kelpie) but she was carefully picked as the quietest of the litter and hasn't ever really had a destructive bone in her body.

You don't need to buy a small crate and then get a bigger one, just start with the one that will fit as an adult
