Sending lots of whippety good vibes to Yogi, on another forum someone was also suggesting that a Kevlar vest should be invented for whippets, they would make a fortune.

Do you think he might be more relaxed and come out if someone took one of their friendly dogs to the area. Good luck guys...........

I can remember hearing from some one who was in Changi that the dogs there licked their (the pows) ulcers and in doing so debrided them and helped them heal.

Have you left any food for him so that he stays in the area ?

Will Water Loving Dogs Swim And Swim And Swim
Trishm replied to Lucy's mama's topic in General Dog Discussion
I can remember an incident going back a couple of years now when they had to send boats out to rescue a lab who just kept swimming out to sea, he was completely disorientated and just kept going, he was exhausted when they finally got him. -
Go Gert, you sound like a real character...

Diet Dilemma......pancreatitus And Kidney Diet....
Trishm replied to Trishm's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
The Pancreatitus is under control, it is the combination of the suspected kidney problems and the pancreatitus diet which had me worried. I could forsee that it would be difficult to combine a low fat, low protein diet, with enough good protein yet keeping it low fat. Due to some great advice from this forum it seems that the 'kidney problem' may not be a problem due to the fact that greyhounds readings are very different from the other breeds of dogs. Will do further testing in a couple of months to confirm this. Ebony is on the RC Low Fat digestive dry and canned diet, with added veggies and sometimes rice or pasta. Thanks to everyone for your help and concern. -

Diet Dilemma......pancreatitus And Kidney Diet....
Trishm replied to Trishm's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Thanks, you are making me feel a whole lot better, my Vet was unable to do the procedure due to a shoulder problem so another Vet did it, and it was she who made the diagnosis so I discovered last night. So I will endeavour to find out the urine results and get a further one later should it be a low reading, before upsetting her diet. Ebony seems so well, looks great and this news threw me, so I am very grateful for your help. I have 15 year old and 13 year old whippets and was not planning on a 'geriatric' grey for a few years yet. -

Thanks for that information, the nurse said that they had put a call into Hills and were expecting a call back tomorrow, so I expect that will be what they will advise. I feel better now that I have some backup information. Thanks I appreciate your help. -
Diet Dilemma......pancreatitus And Kidney Diet....

There's some very good info here and here and here Thanks for those links, they and the others I have googled give the readings in a different format being USA sites, so I can't compare them with Ebonys readings, which are BUN 5.8 Normal range 2.5 - 8.9 CRE 144 " " 27 -124 The Vet had left when I picked up Ebony, but the nurses gave me a copy of her readings. Apparently the did a urine test as well, but I don't know the results of those, they weren't entered on the computer. Thanks for your help, I appreciate it. -

Not good for a dog - or not good for a greyhound? Does your vet understand there may be a difference in what is "normal"? She works in with GAP, so I would imagine that she would know the difference. Do you have any 'normal' (for greyhound)numbers for creatinine levels so that I can compare. I will get more information about the readings when I pick her up. -
My 11 year old greyhound is at the Vets having had some dental work done, and the pre-op bloods showed that her kidneys are not good, I will get the full results when I pick her up. My dilemma is that she must have a low fat diet because she has had an attack of pancreatitus in the past and now she needs a low protein diet for her kidneys. I will talk further with my Vet, who at the moment has one of her nurses contacting the food companies, but I am wondering if anyone has had experience with this problem and how you tackled the diet. My guess is rice and lots of veggies, I would prefer to do a home cooked diet, I don't think any of the prescription foods are both low fat and low protein. If anyone can help I would appreciate it. I am devastated, she seems so fit and well, I had no indication of this problem. Trish

My nearly 15 year old whippet has just started Vetmedin a week ago, her appetite is just the same as it was before this medication. I just looked up the 'side effects' on the pamphlet that came with the tablets and it just mentions that vomiting may occur in rare cases, but nothing about loss of appetite. Trish

My (nearly 15) whippet has these twitching movements too, they are so quick that if you aren't watching her at the time you would miss them. She is on Vivitonin which really hasn't helped her slight dementia at all, but she is not having any treatment for the twitching at this time as they are so quick and slight. I will be very interested to hear what your Vet says about your girl. I hope it is nothing serious, it is heartbreaking when they get old isn't it ? I treat every day with my girl as a gift.

My greyhound did the 'bed guarding' behaviour with my whippets when I first got her. When she would growl at them I would just quietly take her outside and make her stay there by herself for about 10 minutes, then I would let her back in. I took all of 2 days for her to stop this behaviour, and it wasn't too long before they would all cuddle up together. She never, ever growled at us though. Good luck to your Mum.

Ivan Will Only Eat Chicken Fillets
Trishm replied to ruthless's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My greyhound has had pancreatitus and she eats Royal Canin Low Fat Digestive canned and dry food, sometimes I add some cooked rice or pasta, a little roo meat and some veggies, you have to be really careful with the fat content of the foods that you feed him. Good Luck. -
The same at my house........

You could also ask the Vet whether Vivitonin would help his dementia. Trish

I'm glad they are taking it seriously, and heres hoping the ranger becomes a whippy convert, she sounds a great lady and very wise.

I'm glad she had a good night, hopefully she is able to eat her 'special' brekky.

Hopefully Penny will be back to normal in a few days, after lots of soft food, cuddles and spoiling. You had better have a brandy, it might help you have a good nights sleep after that scary episode. Sending lots of positive thoughts and cuddles to dear Penny from my clan.

Oh Linda, I'm so sorry to hear of your ordeal, poor Penny and poor you, you just did the instinctive thing by yanking on the lead. Hopefully there has been no lasting damage, and she will be OK. Did you report the incident ? I take it that the dog was not one of the regulars that you walk with in the park, they always seem to be a happy bunch. :D
