I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of Asher Thinking of you and your family Bella at this hard time

Glad to hear that your pup is ok. Just keep a close eye on both pups as other people have previously said, a young pup can go down hill very quickly. Any sign of dehydration, continued diahorrea and any listlessness or anything and get straight back to your vet. Young pups (and adult dogs for that matter as well) can be quite sensitive to the change in their diets and its always a good idea to change their diet slowly. My greyhound pup was also being fed on Pal when I first bought her home and we slowly changed over to Advance which worked well. I also tried Supercoat, Science Diet and Optimum puppy and she did best on the Advance and Optimum. I've now got her on Bonnie Working Dog and she is doing brilliantly on it (she's 2 now) and it works out well because I also feed one of my other dogs on it as well. As Lozzie said though the best food that you can feed your dogs is the one that your dogs do best on. All dogs are different and so what works for one dog won't necessarily work for another.

That's a fair point Poodlefan :D Of course at that age (or any age) the pup should be socialised with other dogs that are known to the owner or at the very least ascertained as being suitably social dogs for a young pup to interact with and of course vaccinated etc.

Another one here for Aussie dog toys :D They are a bit pricey but worth every cent as they last so long. My greyhound girl loves to play with empty coke bottles etc too. Kongs are great and you can get the really hard ones for dogs that are more destructive than others (I think they are the black ones) I found that if you shove a chicken wing in the kong it kept mine occupied for ages ;)

I agree with what the others have posted. 2kms is just too far for such a young pup. Its great that you are getting him out and about, but what about a much shorter walk and some time at the off leash park free running and playing with a ball etc? As to him being a bit overweight, cutting down on his food will be much easier than feeding him to same amount and trying to run the weight off him.

I have my three on frontline plus and have had good results. I make sure that I wash all their bedding regularly too. I agree though the fleas have been worse this year than I remember the last few years. Normally I can go a month to six weeks treating my guys with the frontline but at the moment I'm having to do it every three weeks.

So sorry to hear of your loss KW It is never an easy decision to make, but I'm sure he had a wonderful life with you and your family

Dry Food (kibble) Poll
Cheyenne_Fury replied to colouroflies's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I voted other too. In the past I've used Supercoat, Optimum and Advance but my guys are fed Bonnie now. The Greyhound and Dalmatian are on Bonnie Working Dog - the do brilliantly on it and the Beagle is on Bonnie Light -
Have to agree with those that suggested Bonnie Working Dog. I used to have problems getting weight on and keeping weight on my greyhound (she's around 18 months now) and I've had her on Bonnie working dog for a few months now and it has worked wonders. She also gets raw meat and bones as well as the dry food but does very well on it. I also have my Dalmatian on the Bonnie working dog and he's never been in such great condition, even the vet commented on our last check up. From memory Bonnie Working dog is around $45 for a 20kg bag. I just get mine from the local stock feeds

Any Horse Trainers On Dol?
Cheyenne_Fury replied to BJean's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Sounds like your boy definately has a case of the spring stupids (I love that phrase ). Like your horse, my boy wasn't gelded until late and worse than having no handling until he was 5, he had very inconsistent handling and was beaten when he didn't do the thing. He is an arab and an extremely sensitive one at that, so I kind of know where you are coming from. I would suggest a knotted rope halter (I've seen some half decent ones on ebay that can be custom made to ensure the correct sizing) for handling him at the moment, and as Tony mentioned, Join Up is a fantastic thing Good luck. -
I prefer wings to necks as well and they are usually around the same price, if not cheaper than the necks. They are good because the dogs really have to crunch them up and they are a pretty good balance of meat and bone. I've never fed my lot turkey necks but might give them a try for a bit of variety...

Fantastic to hear that Ollie is still doing so well ;)

Aussie dog have a fantastic range of toys and while they are more expensive than some other toys on the market they are fantastic and usually last much longer than others do, especially with dogs that like to "kill" their toys ;)
-
I'm not sure that I agree with all of his methods but I certainly agree with his principles of being calm assertive and being the pack leader etc. and he sure does seem to get good results ;)

Congrats on you and your girl acheiving best dog in comp Cosmolo :p That's quite an achievement no matter what others say I went along to watch an obedience trial over the weekend and I must say, it is a lot harder than what I thought it would be Saw some fantastic dogs that are normally so reliable, have an off day or make a tiny error as leopuppy said and bang that's it they failled. Good on you for getting out there and giving it a go You and your girl can only learn and improve each time you get out there and have a go, and is supposed to be fun after all

Sorry to hear about your chooky girl Imy. They are full of character and it's always hard to loose a pet. Hugs for you

How Skinny Is Too Skinny?
Cheyenne_Fury replied to jaybeece's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I agree your boy looks great I must admit that I used to overfeed my dogs but have seen the error of my ways and have gotten some great information and help from some very knowledgeable people and my once overweight Dalmatian Jake is now looking trim taught and terriffic. My Beagle boy Muzzie has lost a little weight but it is harder with him as he is an older dog and not so active but we are getting there. My greyhound pup (she's now 10 months) is underweight and no matter what I feed her she's still underweight. I've got her back on three meals a day now and she is starting to fill out more but is a highly strung dog and so tends to stress the weight off unfortunately but we will get there I can be hard to get your dog to optimum weight but once they get there its well worth it -

Why Do Dogs Escape?
Cheyenne_Fury replied to Jefe's owners's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I don't think that it is necessarily a "training" problem as such but from my experience dogs escaping from the yard are bored and do not have enough mentaand/or physical stimulation in other words plain boredom and in some cases more serious issues like separation anxiety. Some breeds are supposed to be more proned to escaping than others and from my experience owning three very different breeds, I tend to agree, even if it is only in the case of my own dogs. Some dogs will have the desire to wander no matter what we do, how many things they have to keep them occupied during the day, and how much company (both human and canine) that they have. It is up to us to ensure that they are safe and contained within the confines of our property when they are not with us.
