Super Premium Puppy Kibble - Golden Retriever
Mjosa replied to kwirky's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I used to use Proplan, but at the beginning of this year I swapped to Royal Canin and my dogs look amazing on it. Also Royal Canin does breed specific kibble, I use the French Bullog one. -
With the chicken necks I would not be feeding them whole, I have heard of dogs choking on them and some have died, I use chicken necks a couple of times a week and I cut them up in bite size pieces. With that organic mix of meat is the offal liver? that could have caused his problem by feeding him too much of it, overfeeding can produce loose stools in a puppy too. The offal I feed is lamb or beef heart raw, lamb and beef tongue cooked. I always have on hand Fauldings Pro Biotics, very handy thing to have in the dog cupboard for loose stools. Keep his diet raw but simple, and yes steam the vegetables and mix through the meat.

Small Breeds That Do Well With Larger Dogs
Mjosa replied to kelpiecuddles's topic in General Dog Discussion
I have two breeds here that I think would be worth thinking about. Italian Greyhound, the cuddliest most loving little dogs who love nothing better than their human, as for a bed mate they are definitely foot warmers, also I have French Bulldogs one of the most sociable little souls a bit more robust than the Iggie but they are the same in the respect that they love their humans and sharing life love and beds with you, also love to cuddle up next to you and either sleep or watch the TV with you, both are of course very short coated and for showing both need their whiskers trimmed and with the Frenchie the ears clean of hair that is inclined to grow in near the ear canal. I have had the Frenchie since 1982 during that time to this 13 grand children and now a great grand daughter and both breeds are and have been fantastic with these children. -
Congratulations on the arrival of your very precious baby girl, she is just divine, maybe only a singleton but she has made history being the first of the breed to be born here. Wishing you all the very best and also your beautiful Mum and baby. :)

I use Noah Crossing for things such as collecting and storing, or sending overseas, semen, also for surgical insemination of frozen semen, I know that it is a long journey but for the above mentioned procedures it is worth the trip, his prog testing is cheaper than most vets, but for this I go to my own vet for prog testing AI's and c sections, feel much happier with their service for these procedures, do not want to stress the dogs with such a long journey. I live in the Southern area in the hills. For what I do make the journey to Lewiston, storage etc I know of no vet in suburban Adelaide that does this.

Having bred Corgis, Pembrokes, in the 1970's, I used to have to dock their tails and remove dewclaws at three days of age, hence I do not understand the statement that Boxers were crossed with Corgis a while back to get natural bobtail Boxers.

You can get sanitary pants and attach a pad inside, they are adhesive, people use these for when they have indoor bitches when they come into season so as to keep the house void of blood spots, I wonder if these would help your situation with this wonderful old lady. Big pet shops like Petbarn Petstock Pets on the park I am sure would stock the pants and pads.

Phoenix Boxers in South Australia, they have a great reputation for healthy dogs. My son has had two from them and both lived to well over 12 years of age. Actually have known one of the owners for over 70 years when we were both kids.

The previous post is why I never allow my boys to go to people that I have very little knowledge of and what their alternative motives might be. I always ask for a photo of the bitch if interstate and a copy of the pedigree, my boys are put over bitches that belong to very close friends whom I have known and trusted for years. They are not for public stud.

I doubt, unless you get a letter from your current vet, that the ANKC, DogsQld would accept a registration of the litter as it states that a bitch shall not be mated prior to her first birthday, this dear little girl would have been only nine months or there abouts when the deed was done, I wish you all the very best with the whelping next week, sounds like you have now found a great vet. May I suggest that you buy a bottle of Sandoz liquid calcium just in case you need it for your girl, if she started to get the shakes after nursing her babies it is a sign of lack of calcium and 4 ml of this given to her will boost her calcium levels.

I live in the southern foothills of Adelaide and over the past 48 hours our rain gage is showing 60ml, and everything is looking fantastic.

Her husband is a breakfast radio host here in Adelaide, they purchased two oodle type puppies a couple of months ago, so they are only puppies and we all know how they can get under your feet, so no dangerous dog thing going on here, he was saying on Monday that he spent quite a bit of time with his wife Kate waiting to be seen too, so no favourtisimn shown either, she actually went to the hospital on the Friday night and she was seen too and as they were on their way to the Adelaide oval for the football match she got a phone call to say that the break was worse than they thought, but she still had to wait and spent the night in hospital.

Four And A Half Week Old Puppy Not Gaining Enough
Mjosa replied to mini girl's topic in Breeders Community
Fingers crossed mini girl, I know that any puppies I have had that are slow to lap do take to this, just put her by the bowl put your finger in the milk and put it in her mouth with a bit of the mixture, do this for awhile but gradually put your finger/s closer to the bowl so as she will follow and she should then start to lap it. Oh I forgot an ingredient, a teaspoon of honey, did that recipe without getting my brain in gear  the honey of course makes it sweeter and they love that. -

I wonder if the following recipe will help her get interested in lapping. I use it for bitches that have just whelped and for my puppies when they are being weaned, it works everytime for puppies who are slow at wanting to lap, it is a total food in itself, the problem puppies soon get their head over the bowl. 1 Cup Lactose free milk (it is on the shelf in the longlife milk) 1 egg yolk 1dessertspoon of natural yoghurt 3 drops of vanilla essence 1teaspoon of cold press Flaxseed oil, from health shop. The smell of this compared to ordinary milk seems to stimulate the will to lap and as she is by herself she has no competition to make her want to do it. Lactose free milk is fine for a puppy of 4.5 weeks. She may have a bit of a sore throat from all of the prolonged tube feeding, I do not do that past two weeks of age, they need to be able to learn to suck to develop their jaws. Best of luck with her. -
I second what Christina has said, would put her on the other bitch maybe three times a day, bitches milk is better than any formula, her weight will let you know how she is coping. Best of luck with the little girl, hope that the little boy does well too, cannot say you have not done your very best for these babies. Well done.

Christina I do not know the airline for the incident at Sydney airport, it was in the Advertiser a couple of weeks ago with a picture of the Frenchie, small picture, but it was Qantas that my boy was travelling on back in 2004, apparently, when I rang the clinic that he was taken too the lovely Spanish vet asked me which one would have been mine, about four other dogs passed away in the same week as my boy, I was later contacted by a lady in WA when she read about my little fellow to let me know that her Swedish Ch. Shih Tzu had passed at the same airport the same week, then they had the audacity to send on the crate to her with hair still attached, so heartless. Once we tried to get compensation from Qantas, did not happen brought though, they quoting something about the Warsaw Convention that took the onus off of airlines for the transport of animals, they then refused to carry any more Bracchy breeds. I do not know if that still applies not willing to try that game out again. I have heard that instead of flying direct from Australia to England/Europe, especially with Bracchy breeds it is better to get them going there via Canada or the USA,
-
I would be terified about flying a dog to Europe, some years ago I was exporting a dog to the UK and he passed away at the airport in Singapore while he was waiting for a transfer to another plane left on the tarmac for five hours in the heat, he was a French Bulldog, and only a few weeks ago another Frenchie was left on the tarmac in Sydney and passed away, the plane to NZ was delayed and no one, like my poor puppy, gave a thought about putting them in a cool situation, Jet Pets were the carriers in this case, was in the Advertiser last week, in the case of my puppy it was Dogtainers, I now refuse to fly puppies or dogs with any carrier. No they do not get let out of the crates for the duration of the trip, the crates get sealed by Aqis for a reason.

I can contact my friend who used this new way and get the name of the business, in Victoria, who supplies the kit with all instructions, the dog in question was collected at my vet clinic and the two vets involved in getting this all set up said that it was amazingly easy, also the vet at the other end, Newcastle way, rang my vet to let him know how viable the semen was when warmed up for use as my vet was very interested in this method as he does not have the equipment for the slow chilling and always referred this type of work to repro vet clinics. So if you want to know I can find out about the kit. Total cost of kit and transport from Melbourne to Adelaide was $109 the freight of the collected semen was Adelaide to the vet clinic in NSW was $97.

As a breeder when my babies go to their new homes they go with a travel bag  The bag contains the following. A blanket that your puppies litter mates have slept on, I do not give it a wash as it contains familiar smells, a toy that they have all been playing with and two days supply of the food that the puppy has been reared on, I feed fresh and Royal Canin, plus they get a puppy pack from Royal Canin which contains a packet of treats and booklets on how to care for your puppy. I think that all responsible breeders supply similar to what I have listed. I have just homed four puppies with the above travel bag going with them and all new owners have said that their new babies never made a murmur. Best of luck with your new baby girl.

There is a new method for chilled semen now, a friend of mine has just done it a couple of weeks ago. Instead of it just being in an extender and has to reach and be inseminated within I think 48 hours is the life, the way the semen was stored was with extender mixed with a bit of yolk of a freshly laid egg and then chilled, the kit comes with everything required, the semen was collected about ten days before the insemination by AI and the semen was as viable as the day it was collected, saves the worry of the short space of time with chilled semen in only extender.

French Bulldog Wanted
Mjosa replied to YouMe&Bones's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Hi, Could you please give me a personal email as I think I know of someone wanting to find a home for a young adult and the cost will not be over the top. I have had Frenchies for 32 years and your choice of the breed is a great one for they are companions first and foremost and if they know that you are poorly they will sit or lay next too you all day. Please privately PM me. -
Hi Underfoot, If you would like to know where to get the kit and who my friend used for transport to have this new way of shipping sperm in fresh egg yolk, let me know and I will find out for you. Having the life span of the sperm done this way, ten days, in the egg yolk and extender rather than just the sperm chilled and put into the extender which only lasts for around 48 hours, it would not be so much a rush for all concerned, my friend once her bitch was a couple of days into her season and a prog test done, we had ample time for the collection and saves the worry of your bitch travelling by plane with the risks attached to that, also when I have visiting bitches here they are always kept for three or four days after the last mating so as stress on the flight does not affect the mating. PM me if you like.

I am just so thrilled to hear that the five surviving puppies are doing well. It has been a long hard road, since the bite, but you are being well rewarded for your care and patience. :)

A friend of mine in NSW has just had her bitch inseminated today with semen that was collected here in Adelaide just over a week ago, the semen was very viable at time of insemination, longer life span for semen than chilled. This is apparently a new way of transporting semen now. The sperm is stored in an extender and part of the yolk of a freshly laid egg, the life span is ten days not the usual 48 hours of chilled semen. Her vet told her where to purchase the kit which contains everything needed except the egg yolk of course, once the dog here in Adelaide was collected twice, a day apart, it was shipped off to Newcastle for the cost of $98. Saves the worry of how the bitch travels to and from and after what I read in the paper today of a dog dying on the tarmac in Sydney in the last week, ongoing plane was delayed four hours and the dog was not taken back to a cool place, I would say that this is the way to go.
