I just found this thread while doing some research on maremmas. We will be moving to 5acres shortly and will have a hobby farm. I've lost chickens and poultry to foxes in the past and the acreage we are moving to has a high number of foxes. We have small children so I was looking for ideas for a guard dog for the family as well as stock. A maremma or pyr sound ideal. It sounds like you really need to understand the breed before getting one so I will do plenty of research on breeders etc. The info on here has been fantastic, thanks! Do the Maremmas or Pyrs need health testing of any sort?

Yep, The Paw House with Claire and Leigh. My dogs have also been in Mosswood and Hey You Pet Resort. Both these are also great.

My aunt has a staffy who is 17 months old. He is predominantly white with some black patches. He has lots of black freckles on the skin under his white fur. Her worry is recently, he has developed more black spots under the white hair, mainly on his belly, penis and ears. Can anyone who knows about staffys tell me if they still continue to develop pigment once they have matured? He isnt a sun bather. She is worried the spots might be something else. Can anyone enlighten me so i can either ease her mind or tell her to take him to the vet. Cheers

Ive seen them use the mosquito forceps technique, to clamp first then use a scalpal blade to chop off the claw. Seems like unnecessary extra pain to me? I do mine close to get rid of the joint so i cant see how forceps allow you to get that close? Be interested to see if anyone here uses the forceps technique and their opinion. I do mine day 2-3, quick snip and condys, i use the handy little scissors from Sways shop. Literally takes seconds. Never had any problems. :p

It was an accident and you did the right thing by taking them to the vet as soon as you realised. They are on the right treatment, they will most likely be fine now, stop beating yourself up about it. Just keep up with the tablets, they will most likely have a blood test in a few weeks to test their clotting factors, but i think you will find it will not be the tragic end you are predicting.

Good luck, how exciting. Some new whippie blood!

Holy crap, its bad enough if you have your dogs and that happens, let alone your child I would be suffering post traumatic stress too, i sympathise with you i really do. I hope that dog is found and it and its owners are dealt with accordingly. I actually like German Shepherds but one attacked me at work once and it scared the bejeezuz out of me, they are scary bastards when they want to be! I hope you feel better soon.

Places To Go Camping With Dogs In Perth.
Whipitgood replied to Whipitgood's topic in General Dog Discussion
I didn't mean Perth as such (trying to get away from the hustle & bustle! ) within a few hours of Perth, yes somewhere, either campsites or caravan parks, that will accept dogs. Thanks golden, I'll have a look at that link, cheers. Crazycrests that website is fantastic thankyou! -
I did a search on this topic and can't find any relating specifically to Perth. We have been to dwellingup but was hoping for somewhere different. Can anyone recommend some nice places please?

Adult Bitches Intolerance Towards Pups
Whipitgood replied to Whipitgood's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I am trying to establish whether it is indeed a behavioural problem or whether it is just her temperament and accept it. Im not going to force her to like puppies if thats the way she is, nor reprimand her. Behaviour wise - she is perfect in every other way. She is just a dominant bitch. She has had 3 litters and nutures and loves her babies like she should, until they get to the age where they are running around and getting cheeky, then she does the same with her own pups, its as if she is telling them off and reprimanding them, severely! On the other hand, i also dont want this puppy or any future ones i bring home, traumatised. They are separated unless i am with them, now that ive seen how much she is objecting to the pup. Ive only had the pup 2 days. -
I have had numerous Whippets over the years, at the moment i have a 5 year old bitch who is quite dominant and an 18 month old male. The bitch has never tolerated puppies or other bitches and seems to actually dislike her own breed. However down at the park, on or off lead, she is absolutely fine with other breeds and adult dogs and plays quite happily. I have just brought an 11 week old whippet bitch home and my older girl is so intolerant of her she has actually attacked her a few times now. Not caused any damage or broken skin, but its not nice for the pup and scares the hell out of it. She wont even tolerate the pup touching nose to say hello, let alone it jumping up at her or sleeping with her. Is there anything that can be done to retrain her behaviour or do i just have to accept that thats her personality and be careful with them. I suspect as the pup gets older she will be better. She is such a grumpy cow and it makes me so angry because most Whippets love their own kind and are very gentle. None of them are desexed and wont be. Any ideas from people in the know about behaviour?

Dog Friendly Accomodation In Margaret River Area
Whipitgood replied to Whipitgood's topic in General Dog Discussion
Thanks GR - no i hadnt even thought of looking there! Thanks! We stayed at Redgate last year, the dogs loved it and so did the toddler! Im almost out of ideas now for down south, i think weve stayed in most of the dog friendly places! We went to Kalbarri last month, i had to leave the dogs at home because there is literally NO nice accommodation on the beach that will take dogs. Crazy. -
Dog Friendly Accomodation In Margaret River Area
Whipitgood posted a topic in General Dog Discussion
We have stayed at Prevelly villas and houses a number of times, but we are looking for something different this year. We need a 2 bedroom house/villa, dog friendly, perferably withing walking distance to the beach, views would be a bonus! Anywhere from Dunsborough down to Margaret River. Can anyone recommend anywhere? -
Good lord!! Thats a huge weight gain! I bet you didnt let him back up and sit his backside on your lap on the sofa like my old Dane used to!
-
Blimey what with no nuts and gaining 8kg a whippet sounds like it would do really well in the ring after the implant!! Sounds like its all a bit hit and miss with the testicles and temperament. Might not be worth the risk seeing as ive only just got him back in the ring after 6months off with an injury.
-
Thats what worries me
-
Thanks Bisart. Ive heard it shrinks their testicles but not makes them disappear - im sure they must have something left to show with? I dont want it as a long term solution so its good people have found it wears off well. Ive not heard about increased agression but that is definately a concern. ETA - just did a search and found loads of info on it! But im still curious to know just how much it shrinks their testicles and whether they can be shown with such?
-
Am i allowed to use the Suprelorin Implant for a dog that is shown? Can anyone give me their experiences with it? I am considering using the 12mth implant for one of my boys but still want to show him and possibly use him over my girls at a later date.

I have only ever shown my dogs so i am totally ignorant to obedience training! Can anyone enlighten me please! I would like to get into some dog sports and i thought obedience would be a good place to start, i will also go back and do agility again. I have a puppy, a 1 year old and a 5 year old and will probably focus on the youngsters. Are there different types of obedience training and what are the best classes to go to SOR in Perth. I live in Kelmscott, so im close to Dogs West grounds if there are good classes there. Thanks
