I think she has more of a responsibility to protect her child now, priorities change and although I dont agree with rehoming every dog just because a baby comes on the scene - if the dog is agressive in any way shape or form, fear biter or otherwise, then she will obviously think about her childs welfare first. So would I, its a case of priorities! Bringing a newborn baby into the house changes the whole dynamics of the family and ANY dog will be affected in someway. If this dog doesnt cope well with children or things that may frighten it, such as loud noises, fast moving toddlers etc, then rehoming definately needs to be considered. Whatever you decide Bondichow, i hope it works out for you. I would do the same thing in your shoes.

-
I so hope your little girl is OK this morning Ellz. I know what you mean about dew claws, i left my remaining fat little chunkers for an extra day just to make sure they were not compromised in any way, after losing half my litter. Sending strong spirited puppy vibes your way.

Oh OK i thought you said put 4 drops on her tongue, which as fine when she was sucking, now she is not. There seems to be much debate about whether to tube feed or not and i can see why you shouldnt, considering she most likely doesnt have any peristalsis to digest the milk. Ive only been giving her 3mls 4-5 hourly and she seems to be emptying her stomach. Next time ill just give her the beef broth down the tube then instead of milk. How much broth would you tube feed a 300gram pup then Ellz?

Oh no BB im so sorry. I so hope your babies stay well. Do they have a good suck reflex? My girl made it thought the night which i am stunned at. Each time i got up in the night to feed her, i expected her to be dead. However, she is much worse than yesterday in terms of activity and muscle tone. She is laying flat and hardly moving at all, so i still dont hold out much hope. Im just keeping up with the tube feeding, protexin, antibiotics and beef liver broth, thats all i can do. The 2 remaining boys have gained lots of weight and are fat little wrigglers, so hopefully it will stay that way. Ellz, she has lost her suck reflex completely now, im a bit worried about giving that beef broth on the tongue in case she aspirates, can i give it with her milk through the tube or does it have to be on the tongue?
-
OK, shes had the beef liver broth, shes had sub cut antibiotics, shes had intra peritoneal dextrose, shes had protexin, ive tube fed her artificial forumla. Now its up to her and fate .... and ;) Might go give those boys some liver broth too!
-
Not looking good. She went from feeding at the boob and OK to, within an hour, crying and not cucking. Now she is paddling and arching her head back. Hubby has gone to get some beef liver and some fluids to give subcutaneous, but it think its a battle already lost. 2009 wasnt meant to be my year for successful litters.
-
Thanks Ellz, ive got nothing to lose so will try it. If i cant get beef liver will any liver do? Chicken or lamb? Ill go to the shops now.
-
I am losing my girl puppy She is doing the typical fading puppy cry. When i weighed them all this morning she had lost weight but was still lively and feeding well, so i gave her protexin and focused on getting her on a nipple all day. Tonight she is weaker so ive tube fed her, given her more protexin and she is warm. She has had antibiotics now as i dont have much to lose at this stage. Crap. ;)

Hi Chocolate Shes my only girl and the one i will keep here. Shes a dilute fawn parti, i thought she was blue but now she has dried off a bit im sure she is fawn. Shes pretty isnt she. I wanted a girl out of this litter so i hope she turns out, im sure she will. She has made a good start by having nice markings!

Hi Whippets, i dont think that discharge was associated with the decomposed pup. That discharge was just was a few days after her matings, i was more worried that conception handnt taken place or she was aborting. This pup was completely developed and formed and would have only died in the last week or so. I am however, worried that the live pups may have been exposed to some sort of revolting infection. I am putting Scarlett on antibiotics. Not keen on starting ABs on the pups just yet, but not keen on waiting for them to get sick either!
-
The girl is the blue and white parti, the rest are the boys. Lots of fawns which i dont usually get, never had a blue parti and i ALWAYS get brindles!! So a nice little surprise package!
-
OK think she is done! Couldnt figure out if there were 6 or 7 on xray but it appears there were 6. So we have 1st blue and white boy born dead. 3 live boys all fawn and white. 1 live girl - blue and white parti. 1 very dead and decomposed last female puppy Never had this before so not sure what causes that? It had been dead a while, but fully developed. Anyway, i have 4 beautiful babies and 1 girl who will stay with me.

3 walks and some synto and shes had 2 more fawn boys. Her uterus was atonic, as soon as i gave her the synto she started contracting again. There is definately 1 more, maybe 2, so hopefully she will get on and deliver them. Poor love is exhausted.
-
Really? Even if she isnt pushing? My next step would be oxytocin, but once ive given that then she has a time limit before i have to jump in and section her. While she is comfortable im happy to leave her. I know some bitches have a long rest beteen pups, without pushing. Whats peoples thoughts?? Its not like i cant section her, my husband is on hand to take us into work and he will do the caesar as soon as we think she needs it. But i would like to give her time to do it herself, while she is not distressed. She has had a previous litter successfully. Thoughts and advice?!
-
she had a brindle boy at 7.30am, nothing since. 3 pups total, 1 dead. We know she has 6, maybe 7. Shes not pushing, just relaxing feeding pups. Im loathe to intervene yet but i have to admit im getting edgy!
