Yes there certainly is an outbreak of sorts. My husband has had to euthanase or tried to treat 8 puppies in 3 weeks. Mostly unvaccinated or pups that havent finished their course. I made him have a bleach shower before setting foot in the door since i have a 10 week old puppy at the moment We stayed in the aircon then went for a swim in our pool. Im off to work now for night shift, airconditioned thankfully. The dogs have been flaked out in the aircon all day too!

Thats absolute robbery. I have the greatest respect for vets and what they charge for their services generally, but if there are vets charging $200 vaccinations then i hope their clients start to shop around!
-
For a C5 vaccination alone?? You cant be serious?! Those vets must be few and far in between and must have solid gold syringes! Seriously though, i cant understand how a vet can charge this much for a vaccination and health check. I understand if there are other services included. I would love to know who does this, between my husband and I - we have both worked in most clinics south of the river and many north, over the past 20 years and ive never seen that much of a price hike in just a vaccination and health check.
-
Having worked in vet clinics for many years, including Vetwest and Wanneroo - thats about the average price. Im not sure where you got $100 for a C5 from but it must have included more than just the vacc and health check. Most vets have to stay competitive with services like vaccinations so you can expect to pay around $75-$85 for a C5 in Perth.

Most shows are at the Dogs West / Canine Association on the corner of Warton and Ranford Roads in Canningvale. There are shows most weekends and i think they are advertised on their website, unless you become a member then you will recive the K9 News which will tell you what shows are on and when! Have fun, they are always good to watch and become quite nice social events if you are a regular!

Thanks Sparky. I have been stacking them up in front of the mirror since day dot, so i can see that im placing them correctly from when they are pups and ive been comparing the "free stack" style with "pulling head up with the lead style". But im still undecided what makes them look better! I must get some opinions at the shows this weekend! Thanks Ellz, yes you are right, on the odd occasion when one of them has moved a foot (and its usually just as the judge walks past for a look!! ) it is far less subtle to correct them again. I have to admit, my boy looks good kneeling beside him pulling his head up (looks like im choking him which is why i never liked doing it), my girl ive never done it with but when i did it in front of the mirror today, she didnt have that usual "oh im bored can we go now" look, which she does when i free stack her Go figure!!

I have always free stacked my Whippets and they stand there beautifully, i have no need to kneel beside them and push on their rump or pull their head up. When i say free stack i mean i place them, then move in front with hands off the dog. I then stand in front to bait them forward (this doesnt always happen of course but 9 times out of 10 they will not move a foot). But i notice there are some well known, big winning exhibitors who still kneel beside the dog after it has been placed. The main difference i have noticed is that they pull upwards on the lead and bait the dog forward and down slightly. I have recently done this with my new boy and i have to admit it does make his length of neck look nice. But with free stacking ive always left the lead loose around their neck, leaving them to look quite "relaxed" but still baited. What are other peoples opinions on this? I am now questioning whether i should free stack or kneel beside the dogs. What makes the dogs look better and what looks better to the judge? I would have thought that not being behind the dog would give the judge a better impression of overall outline. I also thinks it looks "neater". Thoughts?

Thats great Wilderblu, thankyou. I didnt have a clue whether it was in the high or low thousands, thanks for the info!

Can anyone give me a rough idea of what it would cost in total, from those that have imported dogs from NZ? Thanks

OMG Mirawee, how do you do it?! 3 dogs is my limit otherwise im too stressed, too rushed and dont enjoy myself!!

I just sent off my entries. I didnt enter last year because i was surposed to have had a pregnant bitch, but she didnt take, so i was mildly jacked off!! This year i have my girl entered, my minor boy who i am sooo happy with so far and my new baby. So ill be doing some running in the heat!

Thanks for the replies, looks like im not the only disgruntled client then! I figure its not a cheap diet for dogs, if they want me to recommend it to my puppy owners, the least they can do is supply me with a 1kg bag of food for each pup once a year!! After sending a stroppy email, i finally got a reply from a Sally Brook who said there has been supply problems and i should get them soon. Maybe i should change the food i pup my babies on. What other companys provide puppy packs then? I make up my own puppy packs but i like sending them home with a sample of food they were weaned onto as well.

If One More Person Asks Me...... Grrrr
Whipitgood replied to pixie_meg's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yes you should!! :D I can understand how you feel, though its pretty rare to see a Borzoi down at the park, so i can see why people mistake him for other breeds. He is lovely though! They tend to go through that long lanky puppy stage anyway, where they often dont look like what the breed should do. Im sure he will bloom into a lovely Borzoi and when he reaches hip height they will stop thinking he is a whippet! I get people asking me if my whippets are greyhounds, i am mortally wounded and offended - my whippets are not big and are of standard size thanks very much, how dare you!! -
Has anyone else had a delay in their puppy packs arriving? I ordered them ages ago before xmas, the pups have long gone to their new homes and i still have no packs. I have emailed them 4 times with no reply, there is no phone number listed to contact them (off the website). Is anyone else waiting? It annoys me that i promise the puppy packs to new puppy owners after using the product for so long and they cant even provide me with 3 puppy packs in time!

Thanks Whippets, thats good to know - there certainly isnt any weight in the little peas now!! I know retained testicles will cause problems, that not my issue. I was wondering if i could show him in the mean time till it came down into the scrotum, its not far off it. If i ever had a pup or dog with a permanant undecended testicle - he would be castrated and put into a pet home. But i wouldnt make that decision until he was 6 months old, just to make sure it was never coming down! Shame about your first Saint Lesley. If its abdominal it aint never coming down! I know a vet here that will ultrasound their groin and abdomen to see if they can locate it, because if i thought it was abdominal i wouldnt have run him on at all. But i never got to that point because i finally felt it in his groin at 9 weeks old!
-
Thats interesting thanks, ill have to keep that in mind. This is the first time ive had a pup with no nads by their first vaccination, but ill keep it in mind if i get any more. This guy has his left down, the right is just above the scrotum now, so her theory is correct in this case.
-
Thanks everyone for your replies. Im glad you all suggest getting him in the ring for practice, i like them to have some fun when they start out and get used to the whole show scene, so i will show him as entered in 2 weeks time. I had another "feel" today (poor sod is sick of me fiddling with his privates!! ), it has come down much lower and is just above the scrotum but still hard to palpate. Looks like it might come down eventually.
-
Hmmm wise advice Lesley, thankyou. I guess i just love having new babies in the ring so was quite excited about getting him out there. But i see your point. It depends on who i speak to in terms of "will it or will it not" come down. At 10 weeks, i think he has a few more weeks to get it down there. Some say months, but im not convinced.
-
I thought that by the age the pup enters the ring - 3 months - that BOTH testicles have to be down and palpable. But someone said to me today that they give allowance to young puppies and i can still show a pup with 1 testicle (its sitting just above his scrotum but hard to palpate) and as long as it is down by 6 months then he is OK to be shown? Does anyone know the regulations on this? His testicle is in his groin and i can palpate it when he is on his back, im hoping it will drop completely. I have him entered in his first show in 2 weeks but was going to scratch him if it wasnt all the way down yet. But i wont if i dont have to!

I took on an overweight, arthritic dog that came in to work for euthanasia, she was 10. After some meds and a diet - she was a very young 10 years. She went to rainbow bridge a few weeks ago at the age of 16. She had a wonderful 6 years with us and im sure she never remembered her old home!! As far as the show whippets go, try putting up an advert here on DOL in the adult whippets for rehoming section - you shouldnt have any problems with rehoming them. Especially if there is another breeder/showie with similar lines. A lovely old couple might suit your old springer maybe?

How Do You Leave Food Out For A Puppy
Whipitgood replied to Whipitgood's topic in Breeders Community
Thanks everyone for your replies. I dont usually leave food out for grazing either, they are all fed 2 set meals per day, but in the case of puppies - i have always had dry food down from weaning for them to graze on. I guess ill just have to feed him as i am doing now - morning, when i get home and last thing at night. I have usually run a couple of pups on at the same time, so i havent had this issue before, i just pen the pups up together. But he is the only one ive run on this time. I am not worried about him running with the other 2 adults, one is his mother, the other is a 6 month old pup also. Ive not had problems with pups running with these particular 2 dogs before. I understand there may be some dogs that are particularly rough with pups but the mother and 6 month old are fine. They are in a safe area of our block. Originally i had him in a pen on his own when the others went to pet homes, but he was so deperate to get out that he has injured his leg and paw climbing and pawing at the wire run to get out . So in this case, i decided it was safe for him to be out with the others. Thanks again, he can learn to wait for his lunch! -
OK this might be a silly question but ill explain my querie! I have 3 adult dogs and 1 pup from my recent litter that i am running on. On the days i work, i want to leave dry food out for him so he can graze as i wont be home to give him lunch (he is still only 10 weeks old). What set up to people have so their pups can get to food but the adults cant? If i had more than 1 pup then i would just lock them up in a pen together. But seeing as there is only 1, i dont want him locked up all day on his own so he is just running around the enclosed part of our garden with the adults. I have tried making a contraption with the bunnings compost cages with a tiny doorway that i thought only a 10 week pup could get through, but being skinny whippets - my 7 month old can squeeze in and steal the food!! What do others do?
-
Yes maybe the dog should be given a chance, supervised. A friend of mine had awful trouble with her Bully x Heeler snapping at and towards her baby when it was on the floor on its play mat. Purely fear related. After some intensive behavioural therapy from a behaviourist, which they continued every day at home - the dog is now absolutely fine and the baby is now a toddler who throws the ball for him, which he loves! Every dog is individual and professional help would be a good step if euth wasnt an option straight away.

I apologise sharpei rescue, i missed the bit in your post where you said "give them their wings". That too would be my first choice given the circumstances, but not many people think that way on this forum and would be horrified at the thought of euthansia as an option. Didnt expect to see it in your post so missed it! :D Edited to say - good luck with the birth of your baby, enjoy your birth and enjoy your new little bundle, such a special time.
