Oops, a bit late this week... Thirtyeight 'I'd like to see our roles reversed To watch you hang on every word I'd like to see you have your way...'

Lovely, CM. That last little bit of light is my favourite time of day.

The G is AF-S and has no aperture ring. The D is AF and has an aperture ring. The G is apparently the step up, the better quality. I try not to think too hard about them  I know the Nikon equivalent of Canons L lenses have the gold ring around them. I only have one, which is the 105mm. Makes sense, because it is a gorgeous lens. And my most expensive by far

I bought the Nikon 85mm 1.8G (I read some reviews and apparently it is nicer than the D): http://camerapro.net.au/nikon-85mm-f18g-year-genuine-nikon-australia-warranty-p-4896.html?osCsid=bd63549b421fbd2ef4b2b73160e62f27 The wider it opens, the more expensive it is. Also, the 1.8s are usually more plastic-y and cheap compared to the 1.4s. There is also talk that better glass is used on the more expensive lens, therefore providing better bokeh. I looked at some comparisons online, but for the price - the difference is negligible for me. After all, my 50mm 1.8 has served me well all these years :)

It's here! I had a little play before the storm. I'm in love It is freaking sharp! At f1.8 At f1.8 Comparisons

excitement plus!! I love the time between hitting the buy button "what have I done ... oh well, it's too late ... oh goody, a new lens" to the time it arrives on the doorstep, all that potential  I'm sure you'll do well with it :) I'm doing that right now! Fingers crossed, it might be here tomorrow, otherwise it should be here on Friday. Love those beach shots, CM. I also love how you call f2.5 off wide open

Ok, just hit buy on the 85mm 1.8G Eeeeeep!! Haven't bought a new lens in forever. So excited!

Yes :) Once you figure it out, it becomes second nature. I don't know, I guess shooting weddings has trained me to be quick - changing settings from inside the dark church to outside in the sun has to be done in a second. It just takes practice and I promise you will barely have to think about it. We pay big money for these machines, we should be the boss and tell them what to do :) ETA I should add, that if it's working for you (as in, general you) then that's great! But I can't trust my camera to make the same decisions as me. Because I am a control freak

Thanks for the comparisons, CM. Really interesting! I would never shoot at 1.8 if I could help it, although sometimes it's necessary in dark churches etc. My 105mm is slow, way too slow to use for anything that moves. It just hunts too much. By the looks of things, the 85mm is better.

I am going to PM you!

Thanks so much for this, CM :D I have been contemplating the Nikon 85mm 1.8 even more after speaking to a couple of photographers that swear by it. ATM I am loving using my 105mm more and more, but would love the shorter focal length of the 85mm. Would love to see more, of course.

So did I! :D

I'm pretty sure it's the first rung in the Canon DSLR ladder. Am I right, Canon peeps? You're not thinking of switching sides are you Rozzie? :p
-
I know  That's what prompted me to put it here. The other one was one shot. I just couldn't get them to look at each other at the same time.
-
Looking forward to it :) I will clog the thread with another one. This one was easy :)

I use sRGB. I have never calibrated, but iMacs are pretty good right out of the box. I did send some test prints off to my labs, they came back spot on, so I didn't adjust anything. I do have my brightness right down to one bar though.

Ah, ok. Weird that the photographer shared the head swap thing. It irritates me when people just assume that anything can be corrected in PS in a matter of seconds - not the case at all. And to head swap, you have to know in advance while you are taking the images and keep it in mind, so you don't move around and have images that you can actually use to swap.
-
Who asked you to do it? I think it would be relatively common for group images when you want everyone smiling at the camera (which can be impossible with large groups - especially kids!). It's not something I've ever been asked about or clients would even really know about.
-
 Setting the bar pretty high! Can't wait to see :)

Good to hear. Compression is the thing that happens to the background with a longer lens, better for isolation. This explains it: http://www.photocrati.com/the-curious-case-of-lens-compression/

Can't believe I got an in focus photo of myself in the mirror with the 105mm.
-
How is Tag now? A selfie outtake. Lovely compression thanks to the 105mm.

It's just beautiful).
