  1. I dont have any advice either, but he sure looks gorgeous. :p How does he handle the heat up there? My ex has a newfie, and we are in Vic, and on mild days they have the airconditioning on, because the dog gets too hot. Im sure someone more experienced will be along with some suggestions for you.
  2. Feed them separately, or closely supervise them, with the stealer on a lead, so she cant go to the other pups bowl. A growl and a firm "No" when she tries to steal it. And then reward her with a treat for staying away from the food.
  3. How long is your dog alone during the daytime? She would be upset if you only got her yesterday, shes just a baby really, & has been separated from her litter mates, and gone to a strange home, with no company, even during the day. If shes outside, make sure she has plenty to keep her occupied, some toys to play with, kongs are good if you fill them with treats or peanut butter, make sure she has a snuggly kennel/bed to go to, as well as water. Can someone come home at lunchtime or something to keep her company? Its a long day for a puppy on its own, they will howl their displeasure, or simply because they are bored.
  4. Thanks for the info. Is it okay to close the door at night? Should be fine if you take puppy out for regular wee breaks, not sure how old your pup is, but usually an 8 week old pup would need to go out every 3 hours overnight for a wee break. Older pups can hang on a bit longer, but usually take pup out to toilet before you go to bed, and then once during the night, and again early morning.
  5. Dont leave the puppy fore that long during the day confined to the crate. I would leave the crate (make sure the door is open and cant shut) in the laundry with the pup, and leave your older dog outside.
  6. Unless you are going to allow the pup to sleep with your daughter every night (and that includes when she is a hairy, fully grown big dog) then dont do it again. You need to set some boundaries with the pup, now. Choose where you want her to sleep and stick with it. First nights are always hard, but perservere. Make sure she has somewhere warm to sleep, maybe some music, a cuddly toy to snuggle up to, and maybe a kong to chew on. Then leave her and dont go back unless you are planning to take her out to the toilet etc. Have you thought about crate training her? That way, she can sleep in a main area, but be enclosed.
  7. How tragic. RIP Bubba, such an awful end to his life. You must be devastated. Run free at the bridge
  8. Littlelabrador, where are you located? That way, some of the Doler's can give you a good recommendation for a professional dog trainer (like K9) for you lab puppy. Better to get one that comes recommended than looking in the yellow pages, not all are good ones.
  9. My girl is a sook when it comes to her ears as well. She tends to get quite a lot of wax in them, plus mites at one stage, where she scratched her ear until it bled. She runs if she sees me coming with the cotton balls and a plastic cup, she knows it means cleaning time. But she will come and lay down near me if I have food, so I do that, then give her some treats, then a belly rub, then do her ears. She doesnt struggle too much (I used to have to have another person hold her) now, but she sure as heck doesnt like it. I use Malaseb as an ear cleaner/ear flush. I dilute it 1/50 (with warm water) and syringe in a few drops, massage the ear (during which she makes weird and wonderful noises ) then she shakes it out, and I wipe out the rest of the ear with a damp cotton ball. I do this once every 10 days or so, as her ears are always full of dust because she rolls around in it all the time, feeelthy little dog she is.
  10. Why on earth would you tie up your dogs where they are supposed to poop? You really are a worry Cazz, that isnt training the dogs at all. If you want them to poop or wee in a place in the garden, take them out on leads to the "place" after every meal, and every hour during the day and praise them immensely when they do the deed. Tying them up is cruel and is achieving nothing.
  11. Probably best to take your boy to the vets, what happened doesnt sound right, and is probably something very treatable. I wouldnt give the dog any drugs unless your vet has advised you to do so. Very hard to try to diagnose things over the internet, especially when we arent vets.
  12. Awww, what a gorgeous face your boy has. Puppies love to chew on things, so the chicken necks are great for chewing on, plus good for his teeth, cause puppies are always starving. Just make sure his walk is more of a leisurely walk, meeting lots of people and other dogs for socialisation. :D
  13. :shakehead: Wouldnt want to be one of your dogs, thats for sure.
  14. Sorry to hear that dogdude. RIP Beejay.

So sorry to hear. RIP Trez.
  16. Ah, I see. Cheeky little blighter probably worked out how to open the crate did he? Just keep an eye on him in case he actually ate anything he shouldnt have, tv remote, wires, a sock or two, half a table leg..
  17. Oh dear. Puppies will be puppies. Just wondering how long is your puppy crated for and why?
  18. RIP Treacle. :hugs: for you Squeak.
  19. Okay, the original owner obviously lets the dog pretty much run wild, (eg, eating sunnies, glasses, chewing things, having the run of the house, jumping on tables, getting on the bed and under the blankets if she wants to ;) ). To me its pretty obvious if the dog is chewing everything in sight, put things up out of her reach or put the dog out of their reach. My point being the dog needs leadership, get the dog off the bed and crate train her, at the moment the dog doesnt have a leader so does as she pleases. I have a gorgeous staffy myself, I know what they are like. I never left her alone (the second time around anyway) if she chewed something (Im talking, pillows, her dog beds, table legs, toys, phone books, door step ). If she was unsupervised at home she would have chewed pretty much anything, so she was supervised, I put things up and away, and she could go in the lounge only with me. If I went out, she was put in the dog run with the other dog. Up until a few months ago she chewed up every dog bed/cushion/pillow/blanket/doona she had, until she had to sleep on an el cheapo trampoline bed with no covers because of it. She certainly does now not chew her one and only blanket, because I caught her and she went without it for a week. She is 2 in November. I dont care if your dogs sleep on your bed, thats your choice....:D Im saying in general the owner needs to establish some pack authority, and for a start its off the bed and crate train her, limited/supervised access to the house, and some training.
  20. Start treating your dog like a dog and give her some leadership. If those things are there for her to chew, she will chew them, its simple really. Shes a staffy, full of love, joy and chewingeverythingshecangetherteethinto itis. Why isnt she desexed? (unless your a registered breeder who breeds staffies, then get her done asap) Crate train her, buy some nice chewy marrow bones and put her in there for chewing. Dont let her have the run of the house, and definitely get her off your bed. You need to be the leader and show her some rules otherwise you are going to have a very naughty, very big and heavy staffy to deal with. Try obedience classes as well.
  21. Okay.....so your bitch was 18 months old when she got pregnant & she had already been on heat once? Sorry, but that is just being irresponsible Plain and simple. Lots of people have good intentions......pity they cant act on them though. :shakehead:
  22. I did have something constructive to say, desexing dogs is important and not breeding dogs with bad temps is important too What did you think? You could have a female and male dog neither are desexed and you would not get puppies I suppose you gave the other pups away free to friends? Sorry but that quote above shits me to tears, if everyone out there stopped having accidental litters thousands of dogs would not die every year It wasnt constructive at all it was yet another bitchy comment that ppl tend to like leaving on here. Before u get up on ur high horse u might wanna know all the facts! I strongly believe in de-sexing and all my dogs are de-sexed aside from the puppy cos he's too young. The dog she mated with lives at my parents and i took her for a visit not knowing she was on heat....thats how she got pregnant. No i didnt give the puppies away to friends i sold them to ppl i chose very carefully as i didnt want them going to bad homes cos id bonded with every one of them. I dont know why i bother posting anything on here, it seems like unless ur a breeder or u show ur dogs ur opinion or questions are meaningless. If you strongly believed in desexing then you would get the puppy done before he is 6 months old, hes certainly not too young even now. Bitches are more important to be desexed as early as possible....how old was she when she got pregnant?
  23. Definitely dont leave 2yo with your little dog, thats asking for disaster. Keep them separate and allow some supervised time together, some little dogs get very nervous around small kids (kids can be very rough unintentionally). Can you let the dog have a little space in the kitchen/bathroom/laundry away from your 2yo? Maybe a baby gate placed strategically, as you cannot supervise them 14 hours a day. Good luck with the training too. I can totally recommend NILIF, and always make sure you feed the dog after the humans have eaten.
