Problems With 8 Month Old Rescue Bullmastiff X
Animal House replied to Brownie04's topic in Puppy Chat
If you have only had her for 10 days, ring them, as Im sure most Welfare Leagues offer a 2 week trial, as some dogs just dont fit into the family lifestyle. -
Problems With 8 Month Old Rescue Bullmastiff X
Animal House replied to Brownie04's topic in Puppy Chat
Im sure some more experienced people will come in to help, but you adopted her from AWL and they are very good. I would be ringing them for some advice, it may be you took on too much dog for an inexperienced owner. And if you have, you should be able to take her back and perhaps get a dog more suited to your lifestyle, thats a big dog to have around a 2yo. -

Why do dogs find the grossest things the yummiest? -
Licking Each Other In The Mouth.
Animal House replied to Melbomb's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Its gross isnt it? ;) My 2 do it with each other as well, mainly Minty will go up to Charlie and start licking him in the mouth, and he often does it to her when she is ignoring him. I have no idea why they do it, but it drives poor Charlie up the wall when its being done to him. -
A long time for a young dog to be alone, but he can get used to it. Try walking before walk, leave an assortment of toys that will keep him occupied, or fill kongs with food, get some marrow bones, freeze some treats in a big ice block, that kind of thing. If he likes to dig, get a clam shell pool and fill it with sand for him. I would also try to get someone to come in halfway during the day, if not for walking, then for some playtime. You need to start it now though, leaving him alone for short periods of time (with toys, bone etc) and see how he goes. If either of your dogs are food aggressive, that might be a problem to leave kongs with treats and bones about though. Agreed with not getting another dog though. Good luck, beautiful Boerbel you have there.

Vomitted And Behaving A Bit Weird
Animal House replied to Baby Dragon's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Can you take it back to the supermarket and ask for a refund? Let them know the dog was ill from eating it, and the cats refused it. Cats are fussy, but if they refuse something its usually for a good reason. Hope your boy is feeling better today. -
What a sad ending for such a beautiful cat. Run free Millie. Hugs to you Kirty, it wasnt your fault at all.

Minty had an umbilical hernia, and they fixed it when she was desexed, from memory it was an extra $30, that was 2 years ago.

Run free Xander. He looked like a real character Kaz.

Good to hear he is doing okay. I wouldnt fuss with changing his diet just yet...........most vets advise to feed a bland diet after vomiting episodes...... just feed him some boiled chicken and white rice, small amounts to see how his stomach handles it. Keep him on that for a few days, and then you can switch over gradually to the barf patties if you want to.
-
Its quite possible the food has caused it, just keep a close eye on him, especially if he develops diarrohea. A few cases of Parvo about, and gastro can also be quite deadly if not treated. If he has a good night, I would just feed some boiled chicken and rice for the next few days, to give his tummy a rest. Let us know how he gets on.
-
Can you check to see if he is dehydrated? Puppies (even older ones) can dehydrate so quickly, especially with throwing up so much. Poor little fella. It could be the meal he had, or it could be gastro, or parvo, or anything. Check his gums for the capillary refill time (explained below) Signs of dehydration can include a lack of elasticity to the skin, and a dry mouth and nose. Dehydrated dogs will also experience a delay in capillary refill time. To test for this, pull the dog's lip away from its gum (gently) and press a finger against the gum until the area whitens. Release your finger and the color should return to the area almost immediately. A delay could be an indication of dehydration. If he throws up again, I would definitely give your vet a call and tell them whats been happening, they will advise you.

Im so sorry to hear about Odin passing, how heartbreaking for you all. I was a silent follower of Veanna's (long) quest for a White Shep, and was so happy when she finally got her pup. To be taken so soon is just so unfair. Run free Odin -

Follow Up On My 2 Bitten Pups
Animal House replied to jeddica's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
That is untrue. The dogs were not receiving anti-venom from the start. The OP wrote the following in her posts: Dog 1 was found foaming at the mouth, they didnt think to much of it until later when they found other dog with bite marks, then the dogs couldnt stand up, were weak, third eyelid closed over etc. The OP took the dogs to the vet, but couldnt afford anti-venom. The vet said it must have been a baby snake that bit them otherwise they would have been dead within 20 minutes (what a load of bollocks for a vet to say that). The vet put them in a cold bath to bring down their temp and they were sent home on a drip. Vet said if they make it 16 hours they would recover fully with no effects. Next day the OP posts and says in the last 15 minuters, the dogs have gone down hill and are completely paralysed, and was going back to the vet. All the advice given on here was to give the dogs anti-venom, because they wouldnt have a chance otherwise, the OP stated she couldnt afford it. And now she tells us the vet gave them out of date anti-venom for free (the next day), and this pulled dog number one through, but the other dog died. (an agonising death no doubt) It all reeks of inconsistencies and neglect of the dogs. I certainly wouldnt be sitting at the computer and posting saying my dogs were paralysed. I would be at the vets. Why wouldnt the vet give you free anti-venom when you first bought the dogs in? :D Now one dog is dead, how sad. -
2 Of Our Pups Got Bitten By A Snake Today.
Animal House replied to jeddica's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Sadly Colleen, the vets (around here) actually state that payment must be made on the day, or they dont treat your animal (for anything). I hate them with a passion, and now go elsewhere (which is pretty hard with my panic attacks ) because of their "money over an animals life" attitude. Okay.....my little rant. I spent thousands with these vets over an 18 month period (many years ago now) as I had a horse with cancer. But then I rang up once to tell them my cat was ill and I was bringing him down (he couldnt stand up, wouldnt eat) and they automatically said "payment on the day"....I was pretty well flat broke at the time, so asked if I could pay 3 days later (my payday) and they said NO. I pleaded with them, and in the end they said to bring down something of value to hold in their safe until I made payment. Not that I have anything of value (car cant fit in their bloody safe), but I had a piece of jewellery that was left to me, so I took that down. Signed a form etc to say I would pay on certain day, and had left the item there as collateral or some BS. The cat didnt make it through the night, but they didnt bother to tell me until the next morning that he had died. (and after all the blood tests, x-rays, and being put on a drip etc, they still didnt say why he died, but the blood tests showed liver enzymes were high) And they had the bloody cheek to ring me back and ask me if I wanted to fork out another $40 for them to dispose of the body, or to come and collect him. I cannot tell you how much I hate these particular vets, and their staff. They practice is a semi-rural area, and all they think about is bloody money. It makes my blood boil. Oops, sorry for hijacking the thread Jettica. -

Holy cow, that is exy then. I know the local vets here wont treat with anti-venom unless payment is up front. Which is kind of hard if you dont have a credit card or that amount in the bank. To be honest, I dont have $4000 (just thinking if my two dogs got bitten) anywhere, so my dogs wouldnt get treated if I had to pay upfront. Does pet insurance cover this kind of thing? That might be an option for those who cant pay upfront. Oh, and if it was for my child, I would hope the hospitals would treat first, and you could pay up later. I would sell my car if it came to that. -

Thats what I was thinking Raz, strange for a vet to say that. Jeddica, hope the pups have survived the night. ETA: Does anyone know if Anti-venom would cost that much? $4000 to treat two young dogs?
