The Best Thing I Heard At The Royal Was...
BittyMooPeeb replied to Elfin's topic in General Dog Discussion
;) I had to cover Magic's ears to read this post I had quite a few families come up to meet Magic and say that he was just like their Malt/Shih-tzu cross. It was nice to be able to explain that he was a purebred, so that they have an option to a cross puppy farm dog next time . The lovely Lowchen benched next to us was introduced by a 12ish year old Member of the public to her brother as a Dalmation (due to the spots), and was referred to countless times by several Ms and Mr Publics as a Chinese Crested. (hey, but at least they knew what a Chinese Crested was ). The Lowchen's owner also got asked if the dog's hair had fallen out and if they were born with no hair on their back half! The main comment I heard on General Specials day was 'OMG look at all these different breeds that I had never heard of' which was just fantastic. -
QUESTIONS 1. What is my relationship with the breed? (ie breeder, first time owner etc) First time owner, exhibitor. 2. Where and why was the breed first developed? 3. How common is it in Australia? Probably under 500 dogs at present. 5. What is the general temperament/personality? Happy, fun loving, cheeky, companionable, eager to please, fairly calm. They generally dont bark very much except to warn of strangers. 6. How much daily exercise is needed for the average adult? A walk and/or some good quality playing time. Dogs need both their minds and their bodies exercised, and a daily walk provides both. 7. Is it a breed that a first time dog owner could easily cope with? Yes. Pet owners can choose to have the coat clipped to make it lower maintenance. They would still need brushing a couple of times a week though. They are fairly easy to train and generally like to please, so are good for first time dog owners. 8. Can solo dogs of this breed easily occupy themselves for long periods? No. I'm not sure any breed of dog can. The Havanese is a companion breed, and so thrives on company. If the owners family is away from the home for extended periods of time, the dog will need a canine companion to keep him/her company. 9. How much grooming is required? A full coat needs daily brushing, weekly or twice weekly bathing, and possibly smaller baths too if feet, back end etc get dirty. A Havanese in pet clip is much easier to look after, and only needs weekly or twice weekly brushing, and bathing as often as the owners like (once a month is common). A Havanese in pet clip will need to visit the groomer several times a year to maintain the coat at a length that is easy to look after. 10. Is it too boisterous for very small children or for infirm people (unless the dog is well trained)? No.

I love that photo too Moops, and yet it was Rupert who came around for a vist. It's lovely that you had a goodbye dream about Scamp. I have the same with my kitties who are at the bridge sometimes. It is a nice feeling to be 'with' them again
-
What sad news Moops :D . Scamp seemed much younger than his years, so he must have thoroughly enjoyed his life. My first kitty also had liver cancer. It also was very, very quick and was very nasty. Your Mum and Dad did the right thing. Bye bye Scamp

NULL AWARDING and REFUSING CHALLENGE - what are these, and what is the difference between them? Dogs can be refused challenge, or be null awarded. If a dog is refused challenge, it doesn't get any points, but can still go on to compete for class in group etc. If a dog is null awarded, it can not participate further in that show. For example .... say 'Joey' is the only Labrador entered in the show, and he is in Puppy. He is awarded Puppy of Breed, but if he is then refused challenge, he doesn't get Dog Challenge, nor BOB, despite being the only Labrador entered. He is allowed to compete for Puppy in Group though, as he was awarded Puppy of Breed. An example of when a challenge may be refused is when the judge believes the dog to be too young. In the case of being null awarded, Joey would not be awarded Puppy of Breed and hence would not be eligible for Challenge or BOB. Plus, he would not be able to compete for Puppy in Group. The reasons for dogs being null awarded can be varied, and sometimes in contradiction to the standard! (I assume in cases where the judge misinterprets the standard). Reasons I have heard for null awarding dogs are: dog too small, dog too big, dog not 'typey' enough, dog is lacking coat, dog not able to be judged. A judge may elect to inform an exhibitor that she/he intends to null award a dog and give the exhibitor the opportunity to withdraw the dog from competion instead of being null awarded. A null award or a refused challenge only affects the results of that one show. In some other countries, dogs can be disqualified. In the US (?) dogs may not compete for titles after three disqualifications for the same reason. We dont have disqualifications in Australia, despite some of our standards referring to "disqualifying faults". Edited: for missing 'n's an s's

I did that - fell over running into the ring, knocked myself senseless and woke up (probably 5 seconds later) to find a whole pile of people gathering and my dog standing guard right next to my head!! :p very funny! :D Was that at Canberra? What did you hit your head on? (so that I - being Ms Clumsy - can watch out for whatever hidden peril it was ) -

What Is The Procedure For Getting A Title?
BittyMooPeeb replied to BittyMooPeeb's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Thats exactly what has happened to me! Peebs wont get his title (apparently) until I surrender his registration certificate to Dogs ACT, BUT there was no mention at all of this on the website or in any of the paperwork I have filled out. So he's still just a dawg, not a titled sports star! -
I missed this thread too. I'm so sorry to hear about Ruby Longclaw

That looks great! How did you do it Heidii? (I have a higher res version on my PC so would like to make the changes on that one and get it printed) Vehs, she turned THREE earlier this year. I keep forgetting that she is all grown up now cause she still acts like the baby of the family LOL. NOT happy with the Havanese claiming that title! I just used the dodge tool: Set Exposure between 15 - 40 depending on how white you want - dont over do it - experiment. Mode set to midtones, use a "fuzzy" brush. You can also then use the Clone Stamp Tool to copy white hairs from the dog to replace dirty hairs here and there Thanks - I'll try that tonight.

What Is The Procedure For Getting A Title?
BittyMooPeeb replied to BittyMooPeeb's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Thanks everyone! Turns out that Dogs ACT only has one form for titles, so I have to fill in the one for conformation titles, and just leave the bits where it asks for points blank. Costs $18 here. Plus another $18 for a sash (if you want one). I dont think we get a separate certificate though :D. The person from Dogs ACT I spoke to said they just send out a new copy of his registration certificate, but this one will have his title after his name. Cant wait to get it -

You guys have an indoor venue. who cares about a web site! -
Kitty, is the 'fencing' you have put on the child gate a trellis type? If so, she could be using it to climb out (lots of little rungs on a ladder for her!) Try putting some of your (worn) clothes in teh laundry with her, so she has your smell close to her. She may even feel better with the internal door shut. With it open, she can see that lovely house to explore, and possibly also thinks to are still in it so comes to find you.

Ditto - I wouldn't leave a 12 week old pup unsupervised with adult dogs all day, for both their sakes. Your pup wont know that Lily has more space than him, and it will be good for him to get used to the sights and sounds of outside. One note of caution, read up on K9's puppy development phases to identify if Harlo is going through a fear phase. When he is, you might want to keep him inside, so that something out of your control (like a meter reader entering the yard) doesnt freak him out and affect his adult behaviour.

Crate Training- Do You Really Need A Divider?
BittyMooPeeb replied to RockabillyLove's topic in Puppy Chat
As an owner of a dog who was confined to one eating/playing/toileting area while she grew up (not by me) I'd say it does make a difference. It took a long time to teach Nessie to go to the loo in the correct places - she was used to going in her eating and living area. So, go with what the experts say if it seems to be working . Just remember to take him out to the toilet at regular intervals. I found that the literature said that my pup shoudl be able to hang on for an hour, but in reality it was about 20 mins, so just keep an eye on him and make sure he isnt getting distressed at having to hold on. I've tried a few methods, and this one is the most work to train, but has the quickest and most effective result -
I was intrigued too Jed . Have a look here

Does anyone know where I can get Kelco products? They used to be sold by PetNetwork I believe, but are not listed on this site now.

They look beautiful Cannibalgoldfish, and sound like they had such special personalities, and were in fact made for each other. RIP Icky and Polly Gail
