2009 Training/title Wish List
BittyMooPeeb replied to Ptolomy's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Ooh I had forgotten about this. I cant believe a year has gone by . I didnt make most of my training aims as I stopped training agility with Peebs and Blossom, and concentrated on showing Magic. What I did do : PIOBAIREACHD Aim: JD, JDX, AD, and a return to pre-trialling speed Did: JD, one JDX pass BLOSSOM Aim: JD, AD Did: work out a way to get her to not run out of the ring! No passes in JD or AD though NESSIE: AIM: a pass for level 1 agility classes, and no more fear of tunnels DID: no agility training unfortunately MAGIC: AIM: Completed club level obedience classes (puppy, beginners, intermediate, advanced, transition - hmm may have to skip one to fit them all in LOL) A pass in level 1 agility classes DID: puppy and beginners obedience. Dropped out after that to concentrate on showing. Too young for agility classes yet. Boy have I failed on my training aims . Now I feel really bad. I find that after showing all weekend, I dont feel like training during the week. -
Hi Puggy puggy, I have had a couple of blind foster dogs. I initially uses scent to mark the dog door and the stairs. I am not sure how well they worked . What I found worked well was taking them regularly around so they know where everything is, and then NOT MOVING ANYTHING and not leaving things on the floor. The fosters worked out really quickly where things were, but if I put a shopping bag down along their usual route, they would crash into it. Ditto with moving the furniture, even a few inches. As one of them had hearing, I also trained them (took only a couple of days) to understand the words "up" and "down" to indicate stairs, so when I was walking with them I coudl warn them of what was approaching. There are some great web sites with information for blind dogs. I dont have the links any more, but you should be able to find heaps of info using google.

Pugs - Surgery To Open Airways

OK ta. Off to the bathroom to see if I can identify soft palete in my mouth ...... -
When we got dogs, the cats food was moved to on top of the dishwasher, or (sounds odd!) on top of the telly. We also put a small dresser in the upstairs hall with their 'free feeding' dry food on that, and a water bowl with it. They dont like to drink when the dogs are around - I think they feel too unprotected.

Hang on, the pup has only been here for a few days. surely a period of adjustment in all parties is going to take place? Sorry but i think you're taking it a little too far, Ok, but (from what you've said) in those few days the pup has already started to 'guard' you and try to stop Nate from getting to you, so we are not talking about just needing to get to know each other and settle in. Jealous behaviour is only going to get worse the more he settles in, not better. I dont think anyones comments have gone too far. Fact is that pup will be looking for a playmate, and is unlikely to be in a position to play with Nate safely and so that Nate is happy until he is an adult, if at all. I would also reccommend that they are never together when unsupervised, and that when they are together and supervised, that Pup is on a lead and either sitting quietly or dropped on his bed, so he understands that this is how he needs to behave around Nate.

I wish we were neighbours Monah. Two mad women outside for 30 mins screeching 'weeeeeeee' would be so much less embarassing . Agree very much with training a word to be associated with going to the loo. All mine will go on command now, and it makes things so much easier to be able to tell a pup to wee just before you leave him for a period of time. For this reason i wouldnt use a clicker - I want them to associate wees with the word 'wees', so I use this instead (and then verbally praise and give treats when the deed is done). 'Wees' time at my house is VERY EXCITING apparently. They so loved getting the treats when they were pups that they still all jump up with huge excitement and run outside when I say the word (which i my house is "wizza")

OK, just spoke to a friend who would get 1-3 done at Wagga (how many is dependant on finances at the time!)

Pugs - Surgery To Open Airways

As per your edit, without having them under a GA they can not adequately view the palate to determine if they need to be done. My advice, if it needs to be done, then doing it now will save a lot of money, heartache and misery down the track. Sometimes, the soft palate can be elongated to the point of near total obstruction, sometimes it can just be a tip of the palate that is in the way. Only your Vet will be able to advise if it needs to be done. Here is a pic of a girl I had done a few weeks ago. The soft palate was very elongated as you can see by the amount they are removing. All of that was blocking her airway. Yesterday, we took her for her first good walk since the op. She actually made it almost all of the way without me having to pick her up. When I did pick her up, she wanted to get back dwon again within a few minutes. She has gone from a dog that could only walk metres to one that can now walk a few hundred. In time, her fitness will pick up more and more. Hi PRS, I cant work out what I am seeing in that pic. Where is teh soft palate that needs to be removed (I can see it in the photo but cant work out what I am looking at). Is it at the top of the mouth or the bottom? -
Hi Chocobo, These things tend to get worse before they get better, so you would not generally see an improvement within 24 hrs (plus as someone else said, the prodding and poking can also make the ear more sore). I would suggest giving the treatment time to work, and not adding something else (ie the malaseb) to the mix. Most ear infections are yeast, which is probably what the vet is working on. It can also be hard to see what is causing the infection if there is a lot of gunk, as the yeast/mites etc might not show up on the slide. I recall my vet saying that sometimes it takes over 10 slides to find something. Give the treatment time to work (I would not leave it for 10 days though - maybe 3-4). You could also ask the vet if flushing the ear out once might help the treatment work (as she said the ear is filled with gunk). I have tried this with one of my dogs and it did help. I used apple cider vinegar, and the malaseb dilute mix could do the same job. Just do it once before giving the treatment (a few hours before, to give the vinegar/malaseb time to get out of the ear) then continue with treatment as normal. Check with your vet before you do this though - if a perforated ear drum is a possibility, this could flush everything further into the ear and cause permanent/lonng term problems.

Would you get more responses if this was in Breeders or The Show ring? I would bring two to Wagga. Wodonga is too far for me

Grooming Shears With Offset Handle
BittyMooPeeb replied to BittyMooPeeb's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Nope - but thanks for looking. These ones have the handle offset to the side of the blades. The ones I want have the handle offset above the blades. ETA. I wish I could find a pic, but I cant even find that LOL! -
I'm trying to find grooming scissors with an offset handle (ie when the blades are parallel to a table-top, the handles are raised above the table top). They are used to cut around a dogs feet. I cant even find a picture of them using google! But I havwe seen them used ... so they must be available somewhere ......

How Long Did It Take?
BittyMooPeeb replied to memyselfNi's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
In agility, my first dog and I trained for 3 yrs before starting to compete. With my second dog it was only one year (but that turned out to be too soon as she gets stressed and misbehaves on the course) Obedience was less - 2yrs for my first dog to start competing in CCD, 1yr for the second dog. (neither have their titles - I started doing agility instead!) -

You are all welcome to peruse the Dogs ACT site as much as you like, as it is not restricted to members. That way you can feel like you really do have a website , when you actually dont . This saga is better than daytime TV . In a sad way of course -
Oooh I love the look of Percy. Greyhound puppies are sooooo adorable
