Hello Friends
I was a member of this forum for many years however it was many years ago and misplaced my details so have created a new account. I always considered this site the best source of information and opinion in relation to our furry little friends.
Anyway I don't want to be too long winded and I'll try to wrap this up as neatly as I can. Our dear Kara passed away last July after 16 wonderful years (a terrier blend who came to us after a failed first home) and we are now looking to invite a new family member into our home.
A little bit about us.. We own our own home, have 6ft fences down two sides and I think 5.5 across the back.. (it's a a little shorter) all colour bond and quite large for a suburban yard. We have a four year old cat Nixon who is a little darling but may need some acclimation after almost a year without a dog in the house. My partner and I can offer a stable forever home and we have a 17 year old son who has good animal sense. We aren't particularly in any hurry to get a new furry friend and are more interested in making the right choice and the right connection for a successful future. We road trip extensively cross country at least once a year with my mums rotti/lab blend and my uncles bull arab and spend a weekend most months 4x4, hiking, and doing general wilderness activities, we understand the commitment particularly with a young dog of the need for regular exercise and are prepared for that.
Our family has always considered our dogs as integral family members and any new addition will be treated as such.
I personally am also interested in the potential for dog sports and would be interested to listen to any advice for complete newcomers.
We do work full time however because of the cross over in family activity times the maximum amount of time our dog would be unattended would be 6 hours 4 days per week however initially or potentially long term I could come home during the middle of those days albeit briefly to attend as I work very close to where I live.
Size isn't important however something that is robust enough to hike with my family dogs would be crucial.
I welcome any opinions about breed suggestions.
