Food Intolerances & Elimination Diets – Advice Needed
Applepei replied to peigirl's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I was also going to suggest talking to Raf's breeder. The Shar Pei genepool over here in WA is still quite small and depending on the breeder they should be able to help you as they may be familiar with this type of problem in there lines. I would also say that this has been going on far to long and probably is very distressing for yourself and Raf especially with all the trips to the vets etc so the breeder should also assume some type of responsibility for this. Did Raf come with a health gaurantee? Is your vet Dr Stephen Ried in Ascot if not I suggest a visit to him as he is a Shar Pei specialist in WA. Also I would suggest the Dr Jeff Vidt website, an american based Shar pei specialist vet...you may be able to email him directly with your case hsitory for his advice. I am based in WA and may be able to help if you need it....PM me Apple -
FSF is a heriditary disorder that sadly affects alot of Shar Pei, some episodes are short whilst others can last up to 24 hours. Try looking up the Dr Jeff Vidt website (Shar Pei specialist vet based in USA) as this is very helpful. I would recommend that you DO NOT breed from a bitch that has this disorder and contact her breeder to notify them that your dog has this. As I said before that it is heridatry and if your breeder is a reputable breeder that should also notify anyone who owns litter mates of the affected Shar Pei. I liken an episode of FSF to a person having a migraine. it is short lived and disappears as fast as it appears. My own personal experiences include a 12 month old extremly lethargic bitch with a dull coat, who refused to get out of her crate to eat or drink and just wanted to sleep. her hocks swelled up as did her muzzle and she seemed to stagger when she walked and was very unsteady. This happened twice within five months. Possible triggers for my bitch's episodes include shows, coming into season although this is purely my thoughts. So what did I do...This bitch was sterilised immediately, she ceased showing and was placed into a pet home with caring owners who were notified of her condition. She has been there for the last year and has no further episodes and is a picture of health. Whilst she probably should have been PTS I just couldn't do it and it seems like she has a second lease on life Some lines in Aust are carriers of FSF and feel free to PM with your girls pedigree and I can see where it may have come from.

Many breeders use Applecross Vet 9364 7666. They offer breeders discounts and are very good. Obviously located in Applecross..... ;)

Peibe, I am so sorry to hear of such sadness. You do such good work for the breed and other fosters. As others have said you did make there lives happier and they were with someone who loved them when they crossed the bridge. take care xoxo

I only have good things to say about Glucosalamine Tablets, worked wonders on my long term limping problem of one of my dogs. I gave him one fish tablet and one glucosalimine tablet morning and night. When excercising him I only walked him until the limping ceased and then gradually increasd the speed at which he excercised!!! Good Luck

I regularly buy this chicken pet mince...and my dogs love it. I buy in bulk and freeze straight away....You may have had a bad batch as usually mine are fresh when I recieve them, but once defrosted i would use within a day as the mince doesn't have a long lifespen. I hope this answers your question
