I am not sure if what I feed could be termed a prey model but it is also not BARF. We feed a staple of raw chicken frames, but also feed venison necks & ribs when doe culling is in progress (not the fawning season), lamb off cuts, small amounts of offal, and the occassional beef bones. I have not added whole fish as my dogs turned their noses up at them. Very occasionally they get yoghurt.

Interesting this raw feeding. Have been feeding raw for over 6 years but not strictly barf. I am more of a raw meaty bones feeder myself.

You are right Tess large does of Vit c are not recommended, if it were for a JRT I would only give 250mg a day to start and give that for no more than 7 - 10 days and then stop and monitor. A small dose can help sometimes only one or two small doses will be benificial. But I would definately look to diet first before supplementing myself.

Are you using chicken, necks, wings or frames in your barf diet, as this will provide an excellent sorce of natural calcium and she will only assimilate that which she needs because it is a natual source. A little extra vit c may assist with her assimilation.

Befor supplementing with vit C ensure that you are not feeding her a premium puppy food and if so change to an adult food which may help to improve the situation. Other wise normal vit c tabs from pharmacy or health food store, avoid ester c as it contains added calcuim.

You should read Tom Londales "Works Wonder" http://www.rawmeatybones.com/ Raw feeding is realatively easy and does not require tons added supplements at all.

You have a potentially very dangerous situation developing. You should have the dog assessed by a behaviouralist or certified trainer. While the thought of giving up your dog is very hard you have to place the welfare of your children first. I have been where you are and have had to return a dog to the breeder. Your dog is probably well past the stage where it would be easy to modify it's behaviour. You are probably facing the fact that you may have to have the dog put to sleep. Please do not wait until your child is injured to make this decision...

Your pup sounds as if he may have been raised on a mainly raw food diet. Please do not give him cooked chicken bones. They could splinter and choke him. Raw chicken bones are much safer.

You should arrange to have her hips x-rayed to see if she has a problem. Yes you are doing the right thing by taking her tot the vet.

Ah well, each to their own. Personally, I wouldn't feed Supercoat in a pink fit having had very bad results with it over the years. I've got two breeds on Great Barko now, Staffords and American Cockers and am having no coat issues whatsoever - the Staffords are shiny and the Americans are hairy. And surprisingly, my old Stafford bitch doesn't fart anywhere near as much as she did on other foods and as I said, clean-up is much more pleasant as well. Probably the biggest recommendation for me though was my husband's 9.5 year old male Stafford who just doesn't "do" winter. He normally loses heaps of weight and comes out of the season looking like a skeleton. This year, on Barko, he not only maintained his weight, but had more energy as well and is now looking as good as he did as a 3 year old. In fact, if he had any teeth, I could probably show him! Ellz I thought you fed a raw meaty bones diet..........IMO dry food = bad gas!!!!!

Me too.....strictly raw only for my adults!!!

Firstly you should realise that vets do not do any great amount of study into canine nutrition and the major pet food companies make substantial donations to vet schools.........HMMMM!

I have read reports which are similar and choose to steer well clear of them. My guys love pigs ears I do hope there is nothing too wrong with them. Kerry

Maybe that is her way of telling you her system needed it!!!! Kerry

Am really enjoying reading this thread as I have had my dogs on a mainly raw diet for nearly 3 years now. I have to agree mine don't get the veggies every day either but have raised whippets & now my two new Vizsla pups on chiken frames (carcuses) or chicken backs that are quite filling along with lamb, beef & venison bones as well and the occassional fish meal. Was wondering about the legal obligation by vet question & wondered if it meant that the vet was covering herself legally in case your dog got sick so you wouldn't take her to court. Kerry
