I checked out the qualifications of these writers, Robert & Brenda Vale, to see what scientific studies they've done....or scientific papers they've had published in peer-reviewed journals. Found their area of expertise. They're architects & teach at the University of Wellington. Note...architects. Not scientists. There's a guideline that students at universities are taught. To recognise when they...or someone else...has moved beyond their field of expertise. Those 2 folk are perfectly free to give what opinions they like, based on whatever they quote as evidence. (All of us do that, which is fine.) But those opinions are outside their field of expertise. So this thread features an article purporting to give scientific information, coming from a podcaster who's not a member of a science faculty. About an issue which was written up in a book by a couple whose area of expertise is architecture. No published scientists standing up so far. Give it time some scientist is sure to get themselves a grant to research this.

I didn't realise Esther Horton did titre testing. I just drove 50km to Animal Options to have my guys done - Acupet would have been closer! Oh well. I have to say I was thrilled with the service I received at Animal Options - they did the test while I waited to save me having to come back all that distance. The results are: Cleo Hepatitis 3, Parvo 4, Distemper 3 - so we decided to giver her a C3 Ziggy Hep 4, Parvo 5, Distemper 4 - so he didn't get a vacc. They were both very brave so got ice creams when they came home. Where about is Acupet...what suburb. Are you going to check and see if the vaccination has actually improved her titre level 14 days after the vaccination? Apparently there is a strong possibility it may not have changed and you may have paid for a vaccination that has not improved your dogs immunity level.

If your dog is not exhibiting any outwould sign of pain I would not go jumping to any conclusions and definately would not bother with x-rays at this time. Also there are many reasons NOT to desex before 12 months of age when his growth plates have closed so I would stick to your chosen plan and also see a good dog chiro to ensure he doesn't need an adjustment in the lumber region of his spine which may account for the slight roach.

I found this link with instructions and diagrams with a method to allow healing but it says it could take up to a month and to also to ensure that you don't bandage it to tightly as this will cut off the circulation and the tail tip could die and drop off :D http://www.dogstuff.info/tail_healing_method_arndt.html

I have us the daily's for over 30 years on all my dogs and never had any dogs with problems from them. As Tess says it is just about routine, I give a the daily tablet the very last thing at night before I go to bed and I have never forgotten.

Hi jaegertheweim I found this site called European Weimaraners (just in case you don't alredy know it) and it has lots of info and post about surgical amputation that may be of interest to you if your boys tail does not heal up and needs surgery. The link isn't bring up the thread about 'Late Docking' but it is easy to find from this link. Hope it helps.

My girls tail is marginally improved but still has some swelling but no longer looks as if all the hair is about to fall out. When it was really bad 2 weeks ago it looked a bit like a lions tail with a tuff of hair on the end because of the swelling. Sadly the end of her bothers tail has some swelling on it as well. Another litter sister had already had a split with bleeding.

jaegertheweim how is your boys tail going? Have you spoken to a vet about your boys tail and if so what have they suggested? If you haven't been to see a vet yet you probably should so the length of time and the severity the injury can be monitored.

The surgical amputation is for damage is legal the thing is it will depend on your vet as to what level of damage your dog will need to suffer before they will do it. Once the tail starts splitting it is important to ensure that it does not get infected. I would ask around other weimaraner owners and breeders in your area to see if anyone else has had this problem and which vet they used as a vet who has experienced this problem before may not allow your dog to suffer for as long as a vet who has not any experience with this problem.

I will be watching this thread with interest to see if anyone has any truly workable ideas. I have a 5 month old with an ongoing tail injury. No bleeding yet but it has been swollen for quite some time now. Her litter mate has has already split her tail tip with some bleeding.

Definately agree with this. I use the powder it is excellent in these sorts of problems. Also did the problem start before or after his last vaccination? Think carefully on this as it may be a reaction to the vaccine and something you should be aware of. Or has it occurred after intestinal worming, heartworm meds or flea preventitive treatments. All or any of these could be involved if he is a little immune suppressed at the moment. I would also get rid of the every thing that isn't raw and cut back on the veggies. Changing from raw to cooked may be confusing his metabolism as different enzimes are needed for digesting cooked and raw foods.

Tess do you know where these can be obtained as there is almost no supply in South east qld as no one stocks them anymore as there appears to be no demand and suppliers no longer have them either?

Let us know what your vets reply is on this topic. If he/she will do titers there is thread on this board for vets that will titer test so you could add his name to that list to help others looking for vets who will do it.

I thought I would add Rosie's results which done at the same clinic as Seita's Name Rosie Breed Hungarian Vizsla Age 19 weeks Previous vaccinations C4 at 8 weeks and C3 at 12 weeks Test results showed Hepatitis - 6 (Very High Immunity) Distemper - 4 (Sufficient Immunity) Parvovirus - 3 (Low Immunity) At this stage she will not be revaccinated as she has shown suppressed immune system responses to her previous vaccinations as well as worming medications and topical flea treatments. I have already received a reply from Dr Jean Dodds and I will not be revaccinating anytime soon. I will also have to see if it is too late to get tickets for her Brisbane speaking engagement. This was her reply - "Dear Kerry: Any measurable immunity means that there's committed specific immune memory cells for that virus or bacterium.
