Puppy School In Sutherland Shire?
Buster's Mum replied to joannakathleen's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I also found Steve to be great. My dog Billy has never been socialised and started barking non stop as soon as we arrived . Steve gave him two tugs on the lead and we never heard another peep out of him. By the end of the class Steve had his German Shepherd walk right next to Billy and he didn't even flinch. As it would be hard to train the two dogs (and myself) together I will keep taking Billy to Steve and Buster will go to Sutherland. -
Looks like it's Blackdog then, thanks.

Puppy School In Sutherland Shire?
Buster's Mum replied to joannakathleen's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Sorry to say I was one of the wimps  It was pelting down at my place and the thought of standing around an oval with a soaking wet Maltese (who had been washed on Friday) was not very inviting. Hopefully next week the weather will be better. I did go to Hanrob on Saturday though with my untrained dog and it was great. After 15 minutes he was sitting and staying with the best of them. -
Puppy School In Sutherland Shire?
Buster's Mum replied to joannakathleen's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I am very interested in this thread because I will be going to the Sutherland group for the first time tomorrow. I have two rescue dogs, one has basic training which is the one I might take to Sutherland and the other one has no training at all. He has never been socialized either so he is going to the puppy school today at Hanrob as smaller dogs may be a bit less intimidating to him. Edited to add: Another reason for the puppy school is because I need more training than they do so because it is a slower paced group I get a chance to be trained as well -
So am I. Out to buy some fish oil caps, thanks
-
I have also looked at getting fish oil capsules but am concerned that I won't be giving the correct ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3. Some of the information I have been reading (Barf stuff) says you can do more harm than good if you don't feed the correct ratio of the two. Espinay, do you use any other type of oils or do you find the fish oil is sufficent? I really don't want to go overboard with all the supplements either.
-
Does anyone know which is the better of these oil? Megaderm, Vets All Natural Omega Blend, Value Plus Omega blend or plain old Flax seed oil from the health food store. Megaderm is not in an opaque bottle so I am wondering how quickly it deteriorates. Value Plus does not say what oils it contains so not sure about that one.

Whos Gets There Dogs Shots Every Year

Both my boys were vaccinated as they came from pounds and it was obligatory. My vet recommends titre testing as it is now available in Australia at around the same cost as a vaccination. -
Getting A Dog To Eat Slower
Buster's Mum replied to Buster's Mum's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Yeah that is a good idea, thanks Ellz. My other rescue dog (Buster) is so gentle when he eats I'm sure he would use a knife and fork if I gave them to him. -
I have a Maltese x that is a rescue dog and inhales his food, how can I get him to slow down.
-
First of all thankyou to everyone for your good wishes and kind thoughts. Billy is now home and although he has lost quite a lot of weight he is doing really well. He has improved so much today now that he is eating and his appetite is huge so I have to be really careful to take things slowly with him. I think he is also enjoying being spoilt with lots of cuddles and a nice warm comfy bed.

Yesterday Billy was still not very well and we were really wondering how much more he could take. This morning one of the vets walked in and Billy was sitting up wagging his tail at her. He was even showing interest in food so they gave him a teaspoon of food. He is now on some sort of glucose solution and a food gel which I think they said was Nutrigel or something like that. They have told me that if he continues like this then he can come home tomorrow. We chose the name Billy after a very good friend of ours who is a real fighter and it looks like his namesake takes after him. Thankyou all so much for your good wishes for Billy. I'm looking forward to giving him the kind of life he deserves instead of the one he has had so far.

It is actually an animal hospital that has impound facilities but is advertised as a pound.
-
Thanks Jen. He was underweight but I suppose in fairness to the vet, Billy was bouncing around and seemed fine in every other way. Two other dogs that were rescued from this pound around the same time have also now been diagnosed with parvo but as they are only 4 months old they have almost no chance. We also found out that a dog was pts the day after I got Billy so we suspect parvo there as well. I still haven't lost hope for Billy.
-
Just a quick update as I am really upset atm. Billy took a turn for the worse last night and it is not looking very good at this stage. This was not the news I was hoping for and I am just not prepared for it. He isn't even two years old . I'm still praying for a miracle.

Cleaning Up After Parvo
Buster's Mum replied to Buster's Mum's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I didn't think that steam cleaning the carpet would get rid of it but if it does then I'll start phoning around tomorrow and get it done. Thanks -
He is a Maltese x. It's definitely parvo as he has all the symptoms. I had a feeling he might not be able to come back here until after he has his second round of shots.
-
Yes my boy is vaccinated but there is still a slight chance he can get it so I'm keeping an eye on him. Billy has now been put on a drip as he has got a little worse. He is still sitting up wagging his tail whenever the nurse goes in the room so hopefully this is a good sign. The reason the vet didn't put him on a drip earlier is because he was still fairly alert and may have tried to pull the drip out. What a little fighter he is.
-
Under what circumstances would a test show a false positive? This was one of the questions I asked. Seeing he had been vaccinated on the Monday I wondered if we were getting a false reading because of the vaccination but the vet said no. I also thought it strange he wasn't on a drip but I guess I have to trust the vet as he has saved many dogs with parvo which is why we went to him.
-
Thanks again everyone and Dogbesotted that is so generous of you thankyou so much for the offer. The little fella is hanging in there with only minor vomiting and a tiny bit of diarrhea. He is not on a drip as they are managing to get him to hold down some water so they are injecting him with anti-nausea and pain relief meds. He doesn't seem to be in any pain which make the decision for treatment much easier. I don't know if I could cope with the thought of him suffering. I'm not getting too carried away as he can still go downhill but I can't help but hope he pulls through and I can bring him home . The vet is a lovely man who is very patient with me even though he knows I will be calling him everyday first thing. Thankyou all so much again and I'll keep you posted.

Cleaning Up After Parvo
Buster's Mum replied to Buster's Mum's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Thanks Jed. The vet still hasn't got back to me about the F10 so I'll have a look for the products you have mentioned. I have bought all new bedding today and bleached the carpet where he was sick. Luckily it was in a corner and a spot where no one ever walks so I have had the spot covered until I could treat it. -

Sorry pup's mum, didn't mean to offend you. Whilst I can understand what you are saying I am not in a position to get rid of my carpet so I have to treat it as best I can. Don't get me wrong, I am sick with worry for Buster even with the vet's reassurances, but he has been exposed no matter what I do now. -

I went to my local vet and asked them to order some F10 if that's the product you mean. If they only get parvo from sniffing an infected dog's faeces or vomit surely you only need to treat areas where these have occurred. I have treated everything as best I can but ripping up an entire house of carpet and digging up an entire lawn and garden when I can walk it back in a week later seems pointless. -

I have been reading up on this disease and even if you threw everything out you could still walk the virus into your house after your next visit to the park. The little bloke in question was found on the street and had never been desexed or microchipped so there was a good chance he was never vaccinated either. Isn't this why we vaccinate our dogs? Anyone could have this in their home at any time. The vet has advised me that as long as a dog is vaccinated, even if they do contact the disease it will be very mild and only last for about a day.
