  1. You can't/shouldn't do wilderness activities with dogs.
  2. Is your reaction contributing? Are you stressed, trying to console her before leaving and comforting her when you return? Is she training you to respond to her requests for attention? Does she get whatever she wants without having to earn it by responding to a command? The more information you can give the rescue and the vet the better they can advise you.
  3. Just checked again, KBD judged Sunday 20 April. Different judge for morning and afternoon judging. No time slots (unless it has changed), just a start time. Morning judging "not before 8:30 am" and "judging times on the glass doors [of] the administration office".
  4. There is one male KBD entry in the Non-Sporting Group. It is not one of the two in the breed pages here. You would have to phone the RAS dog section and ask the day it is judged. That group classification is judged in the morning, the FCI (=international) breeds are judged in the afternoon of the same day. It may have a different group classification under that system. [Edit: Group 5 Spitz and Primitive Breeds] Which breeds attend the breed stall day depends on clubs and volunteers deciding to attend. It is not compulsory.
  5. I couldn't see any mention of Karelian in the Dog Schedule. The two that are in the Breed Index pages here are in Tasmania and Queensland so may not have put an entry in. The Meet the Breed Display is on Tuesday 22nd. If you go to the Events page here you will be able to see when other dog conformation shows are on, and where (location and start time will be in the schedule, pdf)
  6. And indeed some dodgy company is now spruiking their reconstructed "dire wolf".
  7. An "evolutionary food" for a dog would be a whole animal it caught itself, or carrion! Always ask if they are trying to sell you something. Independent reports are less easily found in these times of monetizing. And diets from scratch are not easy for the average owner to achieve, as Dr Billinghurst does mention. Vets deal with the effects of "feed your dog a bone" quite often. Any spare time the owner has is better spent on exercise and training.
  8. Visit to a vet is first step to see if there is a medical issue and you MUST be honest with the vet about the bites and stitches before the vet handles your dog. Is this dog desexed? Does it know any commands?
  9. Thanks, I read the original article a while ago on another site. I also read another article about how working dogs and horses have tax advantages but working cats do not.
  10. These dogs are something between livestock and a staff member so appearance doesn't count. I would like to know how much they paid for the sire. Or maybe they already know he's an excellent worker which is why they paid so much for his half sister.
  11. He thinks it looks exactly like a wolf? A fool and his money ... Next someone will try to sell him a rare dire wolf.
  12. I remember a memorial for a famous show dog. "We loved him, the judges loved him, and he was a pleasure to live with."

    My 2 Oldies

This was nearly seven years ago. The dogs have probably died and reminders don't help.
  14. Parents regularly kill their children by neglect or intention. Pools, hot cars, driveways, poison left accessible etc. But so few people seem able to take responsibility or learn from their mistakes. Whenever someone is inclined to blame a non-human animal I have been known to ask "Aren't we supposed to be of superior intelligence?" Grumpy/crazy old woman will get off her soapbox now.
  15. "Two dogs that never paid attention to the video were discarded." I don't think that's good science.
  16. Can't find a mention of sample size or characteristics in an article by the author. The photo for facial expressions shows only a Malinois and a Weimaraner. Behaviourists used to say a direct stare was a sign of aggression, so couldn't have been any sighthounds in the experiments.
  17. When was that part of the standard or the extension written? Are there breeders/producers who therefore think albino is OK?
  18. Not in the same level of importance, but a ranger phoned me to tell me (who reported it) that they had caught the goat. Two rangers attended that day. I told them the goat wasn't tame but one of them bolted after it with a catchpole and didn't check the little kids were out of the way before the goat ran down the driveway and ran over the littlest kid. It was the other ranger that phoned me.
  19. One of my neighbours has a brindle chi. The stripes (not many) only developed as it grew older. Same with another neighbour's blue staffie. Solid coloured when young, now has a few pale stripes.
  20. So what is meant in the breed standard by "ruby" eyes? I'm picturing an albino rat.
  21. I found other sites that say that white is rare and some have pink noses, and some owners of white chis saying they are deaf. Sounds like a colour to steer clear of. Perhaps white has become a desirable colour with people who don't know the downsides of it. I had a quick look at the shortcoat breeders on this site (Menu, Breeds, choose the breed then Breeders) and the majority of photos were of dogs with dark eyes and nose.
  22. Even some horse people have gone overboard with what I am tempted to call Disneyfication. Friesians and Gypsy Vanners with manes and tails so long they are in danger of tripping over them. Arabians with grotesquely dished faces. Quarter horses with muscles like Belgian Blue cattle. If there were printed or spoken critiques it would give the judges a chance to say "too much".
