Early Desexing - Warning To Breeders
petmezz replied to morgan's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
por puppy and family. to the breeders and people who sead send the dog back what %$*&! what do you think the breeder would do to a defect puppy with continuas health problems due to the defect. and no bout the family who have this dog don't wan't the dog to go back to them and face what ever the breeder sees fit. i rember hearing or reading some whear that the vets know that their is a slight increase in problems from early desexing. and i also know that most vets will tell the client about this. i persionaly don't like the idear of desexing an animal befor 6 months but accept 4 months at the earliest. i wonder what happens to dogs that havent allowed to mature. the sexual hormones do have other uses in development other then just reproducing young has their been any studdy on early desexing that has observed the dogs through to death? noting all medical problems? -
hi dogwise has verry reliable shipping i recomend them. also check out their bargan section.

Rspca Investigates Dog Squad's 'cruelty'
petmezz replied to phatdex's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
hi Lab and Poodle :p i don't mean to jump on you people have seemed to do that enough, but i find some of your statments rude...... like the one above. you have managed to assume that every one on this bored dosn't use any "positive training" this is not so. in fact most if not all will recomend it along with profesional help to people having problems with their dogs. most if not all on this forum will use both positive and correction methods of training on their dogs as this is what is most effective. some dogs require little correction whil others require a bit more and the same with positive rewords some dogs are happy with food other dogs just wan't to bite that decoy. different training for different dogs. and as many have sead it isn't the equipment it is the human using it. -
Rspca Investigates Dog Squad's 'cruelty'
petmezz replied to phatdex's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
so dose this mean that the RSPCA is going to stop the temproment test that dogsNSW have secured the rights to to test pitbull types and possably other dogs?? as it dose specifiy reaction to a gun being fired from a hidded area. ge the RSPCA needs to be regulated, and get some sence involved in their decishions. soon they will fine you for saying NO to your dog, imagine the amount of problems then. -
hi Erny i havent experianced to much of a difference in my boy apart from "shrinkage". he is still the same boy though sligtly less domanent then befor but still the top dog of the 3, just less pushing to be their. the only other things i have noticed is wanting to be around me more, and he can run faster at the moment. i had him chiped 2 months ago

hi thanks for the tips i will try the trick training just to break it up a little and work on simple agility equipment . i rember being bored through out the first few terms at training myself, and i don't wan't to be like that. i wan't people to enjoy training not get put off by being bored or not seeing results. Bajahi Baja that is prity much what i do, just with different exercises and managing excitable and quiet exercises. i will be trying to have more fun at the end of the lession as this is when the clients are starting to switch of. oh yes i am feeling overwhelmed.... first class i have taken by myself (been through extensive training though) their is a performance evaluator watching me for the term, and several people i respect highly for the way they have trained their dogs and the knowlage on dog training that they have. i'm learning to take controll of the class and ask the people i respect ways i can inproove... though they usualy don't say much, just your doing well, just think before you speek (nerves got to me ) never any thing ealse. so i'm attempting to inproove by other means .

hi all i'm taking obediance classes at the moment, and tonight at class i was noticing that i had lost some of the people in the class. they where their but staring into the stars not realy listining. i was wondering on ways to inproove my presintation to the class, i have had a lot of positive feedback but i wan't the class to stay interested. the lession generally starts with soculisation and looslead walking, then calming pats in sit or down and getting them to tuch different parts on the dog ie feet, mouth etc. then heel work sits and downs. mid way their is a problem corner whear i descuss variouse issues that the clients are having. it is a puppy class so most of the problems every one is having. then a varied heel pattern with interesting things, 360 turns, different serfaces not heeling in lines but going whear they wan't to go and praticing what they wan't to pratice like sits drops and stands (show prople). then calming the dogs, pats at their leval then sit stays it is around hear that some of the clients start staring into space. after the sit stay their is a recall exercise to finish on a positive note. so how can i keep the people interested through out the session, after all they are the people i'm ment to be training. any idears?

Obediance Clubs, Instructors Aaaaarrrrrrrrrrrr
petmezz replied to petmezz's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
hi Frau this thred was just me releasing my frustration, it took last night and most of today to stop thinking of this lady her dog and why someone didn't do some thing earler for her. i needed to "RANT" to knowlagebal dog people. be assured that the club will hear about this..... i don't think it will get very far though as i'm very new to this club. -
Obediance Clubs, Instructors Aaaaarrrrrrrrrrrr
petmezz replied to petmezz's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
it would seem that a few people have had simular experiances with instructors it is not good. I 100% agree with you feralpup. this lady gets :D from me, not only did she put up with the shit from the previous instructor, she braved a cold canberra winter night to at least try to train her dog. yeh i know a few people like that at the local club yet most complain about all the dogs deing pts in the pounds . ........... a old GSD inheroted as a close friend couldn't look after it. yeh my thoughts to....... apparently some just wan't to make themselves feal better and not look at "problem dogs" and not aknowlage them. -
hi all i was at a obediance club last night as an assistant instructor, the instructor i was alocated to help for the night was ok, and asked my advice on a rather reactive border colly, as he has spent 4 weeks attempting to get the dog performing in class. i looked at the dog, had a chat with the owner who was desperat and not in controll of the dog. she mentioned the dog was a lot better then it has been as the dog pulled her over :D . i took the dog into a smaller area and explained to her what the dog was doing, why it was acting anxious, and explained that it wanted to just get out their and herd the other dogs. and expleined the desencitisation process, and started working on that. by the end the dog wasn't reacting to other dogs provided that they where 5m away. the lady at the end of the session sad thanks, that i explained and helped her with the dog........ then she talked about what had happened at the club previously. one instructor (not the one taking the class yesterday) apparently talked to another "student" in front of her and the class saying "i wish we could have a class without border collys" and looked at her and sed directly to her "oh sorry i don't like border collys" ;) . what dose breed have any thing to do with it, these people come for help ;) to hear that an "instructor" had done this to this lady, and to hear that the lady was regretting comming to training, and was at the point of "why do it to myself, i can't do it i can't train the dog" just makes me ssssooooo mad. someone trying to do the right thing, with a dog that dosn't sut their skill leavel and was pratically brushed to the side into the too hard basked... it stinkes, it reaks like crap. this lady was trying her best to do what was right for her dog, yes her timing suxes, her lead handiling was horred, but she was trying so hard and with a little help she did gain controll of the dog. she gained a little spark back to continue training. why did that instructor be so rude, bulleing this por lady making her feal bad and worthless in frount of the wholl class . if i ever find out what instructor it was they better be carfull, or they will be the ones humilliated....... in frount of the other instructors.

That person sounds confused, delta is not 'purely positive', and from what I can remember most of us regulars on the training forum agreed that we couldn't find such a thing through our internet research, I can also remember that somebody asked Melissa Alexander's email discussion group 'Clicker Solutions', and received replies from at least 5 of the regular posters on there agreeing that there is really no such thing. This person needs to go and relearn the definitions of +P, -P, +R, -R. Delta's slogan is 'first do no harm' so their emphasis lies heavily on promoting the dog-human bond, using pets as therapy and to promote wellbeing, and to create good citizens- both dog and human. They are big fans of Operant Conditioning, they do cover the theory of the 'behaviour matrix' as you call it, and the texts that are recommended are general dog learning textbooks, so the theoretical knowledge is available to anyone who cares to read the suggested texts. Mel. thanks Mel for the info, it certanly has cleared up my understanding of Delta a bit for me. when i mentioned what i was tought it was from people who have been through the Delta course, and are now training people to be instrutors at their obediance club, their for they can choose what they teach and not teach. they are delta acreddited. i gess i relade what they where doing directly to Delta as an organisation. you have just made me more interested in doing the delta course to thanks.
-
hi fiddo my persional fealings is if a course refuses to teach one section of the behavioure modification matrix then the course is not to standed. i have been through a basic training course with some one (a profesional behaviorast working in the feald) who has done the delta course, they refused to look at +P and -P and to even explaine what it is. at one point they mentioned a check by a check chaine was a -P realy got me confused for about a week, as i needed to pass their test as well as the NDTF the 2 different groups where teaching different interpratations about the same thing. you can trust NDTF to tell it how it is weather you like it or not. their have been times whear what was being tought didn't appeal to me ie chech chains, but i can now use one if it was needed. to creddit Delta the course i did was with people trained by delta operating an obediance club, whear i wish to instruct not by DELTA directly. this is whear NDTF is good, they train students in most training equipment, under supervision. they go through on how to explane to people about fitting the equipment, if you can't use the pece of equipment they will help you with it. i will also point out that NDTF discorages the use of excessive punishment. the aim for the instructors is to see happy dogs willing to work, not dogs working through fear of being punished. however the methods used by students is totally up to the student from what i have seen. i hope it didn't come across as flaming you, it wasn't ment in that way.

hi squeak i'm almost finnished the NDTF course, and have found it to be wonderfull. the knowlage they give is ammasing, and it dosn't roule out any training style you allredy have, but it will add to it tremendacly. the instructors are great, though you get the occasional "militry style" instructor, wanting spercific wording in relation to questions. not to bad though if you have heared the words before and understand them lol (i didn't). as for the time commitment...... alow extra then what is in their information hand out. it has been mentioned with in the class i'm with, that they feal extra time was needed for things. start your praticall assesments asap, they are not easy. do extra obediance houres early, that way you can consentrate more on your own dog training latter for the assesment tasks. i can tell you that travaling to the lectures takes a lot out of you, and has the inconveniance on not being able to experament with what you just lernt strate away. i found this frustrating. you will be given the course cost, and allow travel and accomidation money. their is a B&B with in walking distance for about $80 per night. every thing ealse is $90 + and with out a car is a pain to get to Boronia. alternativly the backpackers in melbourn city are cheep, but allow 1 hour of travel time to get to the lectures. the reasion i decided on NDTF and not delta... esentually what you have typed highlited in bold type. i persionaly beleave at some stage in some dogs lives their may be the need to administer punishment to a dog. delta would not teach this so that course didn't appeal to me and the way i fell training is most effective. i would like to do the delta course to at some stage but not just yet. good luck with what you choose.

Uncontrollable Urge To Pee. Stops On Vomit
petmezz replied to Erny's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Erny like every one i can't see to well best wishes go to you, and know that kal is happy now running with friends in feilds of green. i found this on the net recently and thought i would share it with you and people on this thred. From Friend to Friend You're giving me a special gift, So sorrowfully endowed, And through these last few cherished days, Your courage makes me proud. But really, love is knowing When your best friend is in pain, And understanding earthly acts Will only be in vain. So looking deep into your eyes, Beyond, into your soul, I see in you the magic, that will Once more make me whole. The strength that you possess, Is why I look to you today, To do this thing that must be done, For it's the only way. That strength is why I've followed you, And chose you as my friend, And why I've loved you all these years-- My partner 'til the end. Please, understand just what this gift, You're giving, means to me, It gives me back the strength I've lost, And all my dignity. You take a stand on my behalf, For that is what friends do. And know that what you do is right, For I believe it too. So one last time, I breathe your scent, And through your hand I feel, The courage that's within you, To now grant me this appeal. Cut the leash that holds me here, Dear friend, and let me run, Once more a strong and steady dog, My pain and struggle done. And don't despair my passing, For I won't be far away, Forever here, within your heart And memory I'll stay. I'll be there watching over you, Your ever faithful friend, And in your memories I'll run, A young dog once again. By Karen Clouston -

Starting To Do Bike Road Work
petmezz replied to Aequus's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
hi that paw wax is good i have used it on dogs with worn thin pads and it has helped them also helps on keeping their paws dry. i would strongly sugest that you stop training on hard serfaces. this can do damage to your dog that you whon't see for a few years, it is realy hard on the dogs structure. try to train on grass or dirt roads these are best but not always available. if you are having pad problems yes use booties, you can make them your self or buy them. i would also use them if training on hard surfaces. the best i have come across are the ones dogs undercover make. they have a padded foot part to cushion the paw and don't come off whill running. -
oh no....... hopfully it's treatable, dose the vet have any idear why it has come back again. thinking of you and your dogs Pampa healing thoughts going your way.
-
hi i use what ever the dog likes at the time, i have had one of my dogs turn his nose up at any meat, but realy wanted the pear i was eating, so i used the pear for that training session i have wered dogs. my favourite treets to use that most dogs like are....... natures gift, wiskes cravers, dried fish, smachos, jerhigh, small peces of crab sticks, chicken, devon, kabanosi, cheese.

OUCH!!!! i'm in pain just thinking about it. cotten will also give you a nice burn i lern't that the hard way to, my hand was white and swolen from the line, and some how it wraped around my leg and burnt it to. dog thought it was great fun though watching the dance.

Maybe I could organise 'board' for you? i'll see if i pass this one first, before i take you up on that offer...... do you have room for 2 possably 3 sibes?

Hi i have no issue with Delta trained people, most are informative, nice people that love dogs. i do question SOME things sead by some Delta trained people as my studdies both private and with NDTF differ to what they where trying to teach me, the same happens with NDTF to just not as oftern. i think it is the.... "put 2 trainers into a room to decide on the one best method to train a dog, 2 hours later they come out with 10 best methods" situation. Corine do your reserch on both courses and then decide, i reserched both for about 2 months before deciding. Good luck
