Teaching A Dog Not To Sniff The Ground
shekhina replied to shekhina's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
What I mean by that is I can talk to him, but not in the excited voice I use for heeling. And I certainly can't talk to him during the test, each word is marks off. -
Daegon wants to be a tracking dog rather than an obedience dog...I do not agree with his choice...yet. He is very good on the stays inside, and even outside at my place...but get him to the club ground (which is also a public area and is VERY smelly for the dogs) and he can't keep his nose off the ground in the down stay. He gets a scent of something and he's up and looking to follow it I've got him to the point where he will watch my face while he's heeling, with lots of excited talking and bringing my hand to his face (for some reason he likes that ) but I can't talk to him during a stay as he'll get up. How can I teach him to watch my face while in a stay out and about? He will not take his eyes of me at home. I have tried saying "watch" and he knows what it means...but the smells are just all too much for his entire male brain Please help, it is really ruining his stays which are absolutely rock solid even under distraction of dogs, cats, kids, noise and bogans at home

Welcome to DOL! I personally don't see why you should wait another 4 weeks. Plenty of young puppies cope and cope well with being left alone. Is there anyone who could go around to your house to be able to feed her the meals that you wont be there for? To give her a little attention etc? Make sure the area she is left in is safe and leave out some toys for her, she'll probably sleep most of the day away anyways

I had one very easy to toilet train dog and one really difficult dog. The difficult dog was not toilet trained till he was 5 months old, and as a large breed dog that was a LOT of piddle I had to always clean up He would even pee in the crate where he ate and slept, he was just a dirty puppy. I found the thing that worked for me was to take him outside on a leash and walk him around and around when I KNEW he had to piddle because he'd just squatted to start. If I didn't walk him around he'd just sit there and stare at me. Heaps and heaps of praise when he piddled outside. He was then toilet trained literally overnight

CL, I had the same problem with Kovu, who has been taught to sit for everything. He would see the toy, immediately plonk his butt to the ground and watch it intently. Then when I wouldn't give it to him he'd get really frustrated and start whinging, barking and spinning around and then sitting again. He eventually got the hang of it when I started running around with it, and now he will lunge for it onlead. Keep at it -

Absolutely That is the one and only thing I haven't liked about the club I go to, and it was just that one person. The other trainers have all been fantastic and the level of help that is given to each dog (my class there is only 3 dogs) is just great. -

Oh wow, I didn't know this was going to happen! I really need to be more observant Good luck everyone -
Never even thought of that! I have started Daegon on both vitamin C and zinc which were both recommended to me, will update here with how he goes. Should have taken before and after shots :p

The training club that I go to each week is mostly excellent, the only complaint I have had is about one particular helper instructor. She wasn't at all keen in coming near Daegon and approached him very nervously saying that she "wasn't sure about Rockweilers". Not a problem with Daegon as he's super friendly, but with another dog that may have reacted to that nervous tension it could have been different. I sometimes get frustrated with the way people react to Daegon, he is the most friendly, gentle dog and people are always warning their kids "definitely don't touch that dog" when they see him. While that's good that the kids learn not to just rush up and touch dogs it makes them think there's something wrong with certain breeds and will create a whole new generation of breed haters :p -

Nadia, how long does it take to tighten the feet up? Daegon's feet (especially the front) splay a bit and I want to have them knuckle up again. -

Yep it's OK to give them whole eggs, my Rotty loves getting his and crushing it...outside! Only once or twice a week though -
