Lat Game To Stop Cat Chasing?
shekhina replied to shekhina's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
He is a very confident puppy, and very exhuberant. So far punishments haven't worked, so should I continue or not? If I should how should I go about it? Because growling and putting him in time out hasn't changed anything at all. -
Lat Game To Stop Cat Chasing?
shekhina replied to shekhina's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Lincoln is a Rottweiler so I think I will probably avoid the flirt pole game mentioned for now. Teaching him 'leave it', how should I do that? He is very food driven and loves luncheon... this is what I have been using for his other training (sit, drop, stay etc.). He is very keen to work for it and a super quick learner... but the chasing the cats is just so exciting to him. I will keep him on lead inside while we're sorting this issue out, or lock up the cats if I want to give him free time inside. I have been using 'yes' as a marker for correct behaviour and he's caught on very quickly that yes means luncheon is coming  -
I've come to seek some help with my puppy chasing my cats and I'm wondering if the LAT game that I've just read a bit about might be suitable for us? Consistent corrections/distractions have proved to be useless in this situation. Lincoln is nearly 4 months old and is a very, very busy puppy... far busier than either of my other puppies have been. He is a terrible cat chaser. I have two cats that are permanently indoors, so managing this is proving to be difficult, he just cannot help himself. My cats are very patient, but I do not want anyone getting hurt and one of my cats has a heart condition so his stress levels need to be kept at a minimum... and being hassled is not doing that! How would I best go about getting him to stop? I do not mind him interacting with the cats, but it needs to be in a calm, gentle manner... and not much about Lincoln is calm or gentle at the moment

I really wanted to get one of these for our new puppy, but had to go with a cheaper option for the time being. When we can afford one though I'm definitely getting one, they look fantastic... AND you can have a name embroidered on them, how nice! :D

Sorry to hear this is ongoing, Jules... what a worry! I understand the fear of surgery, I have Gomez with a heart condition and it's something I always worry about if he's looking poorly... 'will this end in surgery and him not making it?' My vet told me that with his heart condition it usually isn't the surgery where they lose them, but in the following few weeks due to the heart having gone under stress and being knocked out of it's steady state and into a decline. Is that the same with the liver shunts, or is it more an 'on the table' situation with the risks? Either way, an awful gut-wrenching fear... but at least if it's just during surgery if she pulls through that then you're over that hurdle at least! When is surgery booked for?

It's always the way, isn't it! I am sure they save these things up for long weekends, or weekends in general. I hope Amber is feeling much better soon, what a worry.

So sorry for your loss, Kirty RIP Champa

Those toe grips look pretty good, think I'll try them for Kovu. Thanks for posting the link :)

So sorry for your loss, she was such a special girl. RIP Ness

That's a shame Hope you find something, very stressful situation!

Can you crate them inside instead? Would probably calm a lot of the barking/whinging down and wouldn't get hair on the carpet.
-
Absolutely! My boy is nearly 12 years old now and still doing well... barely had a sick day in his life. He can still keep up with my son and that's saying something :) Kovu is from a Tasmanian breeder.

Ahh perfect, 9 for you and the 10th one for meeeeee! :D They're gorgeous -
Oh dear, that's awful Unfortunately I don't have a good report for there either. I took my dog and one of our cats there, the dog for a vaccination and the cat due to hair and weight loss. The vet gave my very old dog the WRONG VACCINATION and wouldn't take a blood sample from my cat because she 'wasn't good at it'. OK, I'm glad she didn't do it because she didn't feel confident, but I wasn't expecting to have to go back on the weekend when the manager was going to be there to do the blood test. In the end we went back to our usual vet, who is fantastic. We thought we'd just give it a try for the very basics (like vaccinations, claw trimming etc.) but even my husband said there's no way we're taking any of our guys back there for anything again.

Sounds like my house is going to be over run with Rottweilers! Can't say I'd have any complaints about that :D -

I think so, yes. The vet said it was common in older GSDs.
