Thanks - thats about the same. And when I think of the photos from 20 years ago with the little point and shoot film cameras that use to take quite a few good shots with a flash (that usually was of no effect) and on 1/125th even though it seems such a slow speed now. I did find at the Clipsal the big 70-200mm did a great job with the low light but that might be a little too big for a small pub/club type venue with the usual plan as it was so long ago to get there early and get up near the stage (like we did all those years ago). SO the 24-105 should be plenty in theory. Just like the idea of being able to change settings wihtout looking with one finger rather than the planning it takes for the point and shoot (took 3/4 of the time to work out how to get consistently close the other night with the point and shoot). Thanks for confirming no flash - I was thinking best to just go with concert lights anyway no chance of blinding anyone then! Since the bands I like to go see had they mega heyday 20 years back its unlikely theyd have any paid ones there nor would the newspaper go out of their way to send someone. BUt Im happy to try and get them as much coverage as I can while having fun actually being there.
-
Just wondering as I have asked the contacts for the bands for permission so I can put a review on my site and photos for myself (review page stuff is my 'fun' photography not part of the horse photography business) and they seem to have said that I can take the camera to the upcoming concerts. Huga - what settings did you have the camera on? ISO, F stop, shutter speed? When I took pics at the clipsal I was on about ISO 1600 aperture as low as that lens went (perhaps 5.6 or 5.0) and speed was around 125. For a smaller venue it would be a smaller black lens but light sensitivity is about the same as the big grey one. Also when I did the sums the point and shoot phots seem to match the clipsal settings even though teh p&S was for a pub type gig with lighting there.
-
Just wondering if anyone has done this with the DSLR on a regular basis? Only concert I've taken the big camera to was the Clipsal 500 one last year and got a few photos that worked but it was only swapping around on the evening as it got darker and picking the moment the performers were fairly still. Does anyone actually use flash and if so just the little one on the cmaera of a dedicated big one - Im thinking no flash or only the one on the camera for small pub/club type venue (Clipsal I had no flash too far away and the cameras will get images without these days). And are the lights as good at pub/club venues as they are at something like the Clipsal as far as I can calculate from point and shoot settings the same setting I had for the Clipsal should work for a smaller venue (what I had and what the p&s camera had were basically the same expsure just very different settings).

I think I did get one of op tech neoprene ones but it wasnt anywhere near as good as the lowerpro neoprene ones they had. I couldnt carry my camera over the shoulder or on my BACK - its goes around my neck and hangs right there in front of me where I can see and protect it. But then if Im walking at speed and carrying it I tend to hold it up with one arm at times.
-
Lowerpr used to have the best bouncey one (it was a shock absorber) but they seemed to have stopped making them. I couldnt find anything that was even close so ended up just taking them off my old cameras and putting them on the new one. Cannot use the ones that come with them they are like wood on the neck so I need the shock absorder version.

I would put a greyhound down before handing it over to some random to do God knows what. If you are in a vet with say a dog yourself and you have been there for years you clearly arent some random walking past in the street (little different).

I get so sick of the simplistic 'lets just ban it' attitude. Without horse racing would all the luxury such as feed, vet care, etc etc exist - would someone really have tried magnetic therapy, pellet food, stem cell research, colic surgery advances all wihtout the existnt of horse racing? Th eare photos in magazines from the 50s showing the 'new' way of transporting horses these days its so advanced that horses travelling around the world in special boxes to minimise injury - you cant say racing didnot help any of this along. Perhaps greyhound racing has done the same in many techniqus - I don't know as I dont follow it but there seems plenty of treatments and theries used on racedogs now also used on pets. Yes I hate it when the dogs are treated as throwaways (never got an answer years ago when I asked dog racing people if dogs have litters then where are brett Lees litter mates (that was the standout champ at the time). I also think its awful that if a gyhound breaks a leg in a race that its normally put down - cannot see why since dogs unlike horses can live with even three legs if need be. Only answer Ive heard is that its too hard to get them fit again Am I going to rave on about banning well no because this is stuff the industry itself should be working towards and its up to those 'good' participants to get the authorities to crack down on the 'bad' aspects. As for that woman and the greyhound at the vet My judgement would have been made after one question - will you sell or give the dog away right now here at the vet (either they wanted to rehome it and had run out of options or they wanted it dead and that question answers that). And yes I have heard of greyhounds taken to the vet where the person takign them has refused a last minute rehome offer and insisted the dog put down - likewise have heard stories of racing owners demanding a horse be sold to the knackery no matter what and trainers/handlers finding a way to rehome the horse 'witness protection' style.

So dogs need to be prepared of some kids stands in front blocking the way then lunges at them shouting BOOO. Yes I had a kid do this to me and my dog - kids chest was my dogs head height. Stupid mother was 3m away talking to her friend - was going to have a go but couldnt bothered since there was two of them there chatting. My dog just propped and looked at me with a 'WTF' look as we went around the future headliner kid. Another time one walked onto the path from its front yard to pat the dog as we went past - where is all the stuff they were teaching not so long ago on how kids should behave around dogs?

Here We Go Again, I'm Not A Professional, But I Have A Question
rubiton replied to Kirislin's topic in Photos, Photos, Photos
I would have thought if you are just selling a handful of photos through red bubble it is still a hobby. The be a business you pretty much have to register a business name and threfore have an ABN, maybe register for GST if thats the customer type you have (magazines often prefer to deal with gst registered business) and if you have a website or other method where you are activly getting your name out there to sell phtos. A few photos on Redbubble and similar sites and I would not call that a professional photographer (even if techincally according to a dictionary you are a professional if you make income from selling an image). I think there is a definition somewhere that mentioned if you go and plan to derive an income/profit from something rather than doing it as a hobby and sell a few here and there. -

tlc - bascially if you are on public land and you are not usingn the photos in a derogatory way you are allowed to take and sell them. However the thing to be mindful of commercial use it is always a good idea to get in contact with the person in the photo to ensure its ok (eg a feed company may ask to use a photo but the rider may happen to be sponsored by another feed company so best to check). The srgument has also come up about say a horse being in a shot (no people and the photo being used to promote for eg the photographer and if its allowed). Again on public land and horses do not have the same rights as people unles they are trademarked (and thats a whole lot of different rules)when it comes to 'model release'. -

You could always ask for their address (if you know which horse beloing to that person) and print proofs (eg 20 to a page thumbnails) and post that and ordering info. If you email proofs they will often end up on facebook evenwith the watermark. If you stick them online they will often end up on facebook with or without watermark. Lately I have just been asking for addresses for anyone who is not a regular customer and posting out the printed proofs - yes it costs the cost of the stamp but makes it hard to keep coming back to me and asking for more if they just want a facebook image and the legit buyers which the majority are will be fine with it and use the proofs to order. I offer prints and high res email images. The high res are about 1.5mb so not the full image size and only via email - I dont do images on CD (unless its a big amount for a corporate sponsor or its a private on location shoot such as a stud stallion and the fee paid is for that service). I wait for payment first before printing or sending as I've been caught in the past with excess spare photos that were never paid for or ones that were emailed through and never paid for. -
'usual aggresive self' - whywas this dog not properly trained in the first place. There is no reason at all for a dog just coz its small to have its aggressive behaviour accept as 'normal'. The dog and the dog owner need proper trainingin how to make the dog a proper pet not yet another aggressive uncontrolled little dog. Cesar Milan has made millions due to people not discplining their dog when its young and teaching it the correct behaviour. If the owner can understand that its up to her and the family to retrain the dog with proper behaviourist (since if they get rid of this dog the behaviour will repeat with another dog til they realise what needs to be done pack order and all), or rehome to a JRT group who can rehab the dog and place it in an appropriate home where it will be disciplined or pts if both options are not feasible BUT they need to not get another til understanding dog/human hierachy. A subordinate to human dog would never ever be aggressive once a human steps in and takes control and if it did accidentally react (persephone comment above)and bite it would immediately let go and turn very submissive for fear of the alpha dogs reaction.

Illegal To Ride A Bike And Have Dog Run Beside On Lead
rubiton replied to donski's topic in General Dog Discussion
Its illegal on roads becase its dangerous. I kn that as a 5 or 6yo yes I thought it would make sense to attached the lead to teh bike and go - til the dog went faster at the end of teh driveway and bike went over and baby teeth in front of mouth GONE (well ok trip to dentist to file the broken bits so not totally gone but bad enough not to mention the skin off ). Very sensible road rule as imagine going along the bike lane of a road and for some reason dog stops or goes different direction and whamo bike rider splat on road then collected by passing car that couldnt avoid rider on ground in that split second. Away from roads your own problem its your bones and teeth bit like the people leading horses from the car. Whoever said that may note that the trainer years ago who was quoted and pictured doing that was on hi own property and therefore not on a legal road. Now as to the legalities in regardto a training facility who knows but the road rules dont apply (like on farms where kids are taught to drive at a young age in old cars inside the family property). -
Actually our dog did know where she was when in the car and being driven in the same areas where she walked - she knew the different ways to the park but she was always looking out the car windows and was also walked where she went by car (we have moved house now though she is learning the new area). It does make sense that if your dog does happen to get out of your property to immediately search where the dog is usually walked you might get lucky and its a good idea to walk different routes so you dog does learn its way around. My parents lived in Goolwa and took their Golden retriever on different walks - they get sick he gets no walks for a few days I turn up and take him out and he actually joined about 4 different walking routes together for one big walk. He knew where he was going while I had no idea at some stages (Goolwa isnt that big and as long as you knwo where th main road it you wont get lost yourself).

Do You Have Both Eyes Open When You Shoot?
rubiton replied to redangel's topic in Photos, Photos, Photos
Only open second eye if I need to know how close something is that Im not taking a pic of (when you hear a horse close pays to check where it is). Maybe thats why I cant quite take pics using the LCD screen on P&S cameras - have to use the viewfinder -
Older Dogs Meeting Young Puppy Brain Ones
rubiton replied to rubiton's topic in General Dog Discussion
Thats it thats what they all do - 2 seconds and same again. Puppy brain on a near adult sized dog!! (my dog had every option and space to back off which she will do with adult dogs she is uneasy about). -
Older Dogs Meeting Young Puppy Brain Ones
rubiton replied to rubiton's topic in General Dog Discussion
The owner tries to calm him down - I think others may completely avoid him as from the second he sees another dog he's hauling on the lead but down on the ground crawling in a submissive fashion but with that OMG I WANNA PLAY WITH THE DOG look before getting bouncey. And being a retriever he's bigger than a few around the place whereas our dog has always had small dogs that tend to yap in her face before we moved here a few months back so she always wants to meet the bigger dogs that we come across (but again most owners keep to their side of the path and you keep to yours). -
OK - how do I explain to the 12 1/2yo dog that when she meets the young 11 month old dog with the bouncey OMG I WANNA PLAY puppy brain that no matter how many times she does the 'settle down' growl he just isnt going to listen? Today she was off the lead and its a blind corner from both sides so didnt have a chance to grab her (she likes to greet him but then he gets excited and tries to jump play style and she tells him off) til she'd tried to do the greet met with bouncey puppy then growl then try again twice. Do adult dogs usually try to teach younger ones manners like this? Theres no malice in it its just how she reacts if teenage puppies are too boisterous in their greeting and always has - if she actually feel threatened by any dog she'll hide behind me and its very different body language.

You never know what the dog will prefer. Ours has cushion beds, bean bag and trampoline bed outside. She'll use all of them though hardly used the trampoline bed prefering the ground until the last couple of years. However there is bedding on top of the actual trampoline bed - she prefers something on there. The height is pretty similar to the step in and out of house doors.

Today it was nice outside at 630am. When we left on a walk it was OK just after 730 but by the time we were heading back 20 min later it was starting to get too hot. So was inside in teh aircon after that. Looking at the temp thats when it was going through the 28=29 degrees upwards. ASits suppose to be 28 overnight tonight dont think it will be cool enough to go out tomorrow regardless of how early

That South PArk clip had me in stitches......was so relavant lol Found some of it on youtube - was missing the walk bit. Yep we were all killing ourselves laughing (cant stand South Park usually but that clip was briliant).

Had front row in Adelaide too - the seminar part was really good and entertaining. My only complaint is who on earth chosethe 4 (yes only 4) questions last night. First woman who may have put it in before the show but her questions were answered during the show and Im sure there were more interesting ones in there. 'My dog is possessive' turned out to be my dog is the packleader and we all work around them. Second question was another that after a while was thinking can we move on then one on choosing a puppy - great response from Cesar how to choose the right activity level then she goes on but what about teh 1 and 3yo kids helping - sorry but kids that young should be taught just like a young dog not in there helping to 'choose' a dog thats the parents job as an adult to judge. Cesar was great handling the 4 questions (yep thought we may have more but the time went with the first question going on and then having the repeat to the puppy lady). You could see Rob Zammit wanted to move it on as he had more than 4 info sheets way more than 4 but I guess he cant really just cut them off. And hadnt seen teh South park & Cesar clip before - got to see if thats on youtube.

Is there anyway to test a dogs hearing - like any tests you can do yourself. Dog went past me after being left being on a walk (not far from home) and didnt realise - when she got 10-15m away and was still going I called her and instead of turning around she picked up the pace as if I was calling from ahead of her where she thought Id gone. When she got within sight of the house (round a slight corner just off the walkway) she realised I wasnt there and despite still calling didnt seem to realise where I was calling from til she saw me waving my arms at her. It was like she could hear but couldnt pick which direction it was coming from (she also sleeps a lot sounder now and doesnt react to the slightest noise like she did when she was younger). So starting to wonder if her hearing is not as good as it was or perhaps moreso in one ear than the other.
-
Yes we had been a the other house about 10 years from when we got her so she doesnt know any different. New one is bigger so she seems to get lost when trying to work out where we are. But has started to let us out of her sight however still unsure about going outside moreso after dark.
-
Really can confuse the dog when moving house. we moved last weekend and had to keep taking her with us on each trip as she kept stressing if she couldnt see us . But better now but took a few days
