  1. Yes dog mad you are asking if 'someone' who is in perth can go and check someones house and yard. It seemed like you have asked for anyone on the forum who could help. If the request was for an official of a perth rescue group would have thought the request would have been for a perth rescue to contact you re assistance in a matter. Clearly your intentions are to make sure all is good for the dog but you wont know anything about someone saying 'yeah i'll do it' out of the blue with no other connections to people you know in real life. I cannot see why provided photos that correlate to what you can see on google would not show if the yard was secure. eTA I have seen other requests like that on here in the past from different groups and different cities so I was using your thread as an example of what is requested on a what seems a regular basis for some of the interstate adoptions from numerous groups not any in particular.
  2. See there is a thread in this very forum where if I was the new home being 'checked' I would not let a random forum reader past the driveway let alone in the yard or house and Id be quite annoyed by the resuce handing out home address details. I know the rescue means well but just to ask someone reading a forum if they could go to someones address and into someone private property. Isnt it easier to check google earth and ask for some recent photos of the yard to show fencing clearly? Google streetview will even show the view from the street for any escape points in the front fences. Clearly if google and the supplied photos dont match you have a reason to ask further questions
  3. Thats sounds like very good advice greymate. And koalathebear - I guess if someone was getting a first dog then they might think differently to when you already have a dog and its reached old age in good condition so you must be doing something right but suddenly a group says sorry you must have a yard check by a volunteer person (not just say photos supplied showing fences as obvioulsy the dog would have to meet any potential new dog on neutral ground) to see if its suitable for a dog. And also good to hear that anyone out there who volunteers to foster is also under the same rules as those offering permanent homes.
  4. See I wouldnt want to give my name and home address to a group that has no contact person listed and give little details of anything bar we have these dogs for rehoming (they dont need to have their home address there must be one or two main coordinators and a PO box is fine, mobile number is fine - I have that on my own site and if people want to pick things up from me I give the option of where I work or some other public place) especially as there are people out in society that I suspect may volunteer for such associations that I would never want my personal information seen by. Without a formal organisation with checks on personnel no matter how sincere I guess these voluntary groups can never know everything about their volunteers which is why like many I wouldnt just let anyone in to the house or property (dont worry Id also never have an open house inspection if selling a house either for the same reasons). The only rescue group I did fill in a form and give details to (and never heard back from again so i guess they never had anything suitable) I had names, emails and phone contacts and the city they were in. And I knew that from their website and from initial contact (I think they also had info on what happens with said personal info). And really any 'disgruntled' clients are going to know names and contact for the group anyway arent they. But I guess for us it will be the RSPCA or AwL since its just safer for our personal security and privacy. One last question do the private rescue groups do the yard checks, full information requested etc to anyone who wants to help out when they ask for 'urgent foster' carers? You often see them ask for something urgently as in a day or two for temp care of animals.
  5. I do have a question about private rescue groups. You see the groups with websites and facebook sites and they have dogs in foster care and put up the listings. Now they often have an application form for anyone intersted in their dogs BUT why is it so hard to find out the names of the heads of some of the private rescue groups. Basically I don't want to just handover private information such as home address to a faceless website that is staffed by 'volunteers' who could be anyone. Likewise there is often mention of 'someone' doing a yard inspection of their group of volunteers. Now I can see why some might want to check out the new home if they dont own a dog or havent owned a dog but what rules are in place for police checks and stuff of said volunteers? RSPCA and AWL are businesses/charities whatever you want to call them but the people there are staff and work under the privacy constraints and before you hand over information you do actually go into their office. But the whole fill in this form and a volunteer will get back to you actaully makes me very uneasy when simply putting a direct contact for the person/s in charge (obviously diffrent from their usual adoption contact) would help a lot. Breeders sites usually have a name of the propriters so why is rescue so secretive (this is the way it comes across even thoguh Im sure they dont plan to look that way).
  6. Also all but the first shot are so fafr away. Unless you are just using the centre focus point the camera with try and use as many focus points as possible to make sure most of the photo is in focus (similar to how it judges exposure). You haveto know which focus points you are using and have them on the subject plus panning plus the high speed settigs as mentioned to get a clear shot.
  7. I read the articleand thought her loss not being able to understand how true dog owners share their lives with their pets not just bun em out in the yard and throw food at them. Plenty of people have drooling kids on their laps, or put them up on counters etc etc is an article going to be written up on that
  8. I find SA pretty good - we use to be in the Charles Sturt Council area and I complained a few tiems about a pair of dogs that use to rush us at the park as the owner thought it was funny rather than controlling his agressive dogs (they were not human aggressivde though and were smart enough to run when threatened to be a football) - last time I saw them they were on leads and being walked so i assume council eventually had a chat to the owner. When two dogs rushed out of a house property and one didnt connect with my dog only due to me landing a kick to the shoulder they investigated and reminded the owner of their obligations (a second dog had had a go before but stayed inside its property). when a big dog that was quite imposing (read scary to some and had no road sense at dusk) was out wandering they were there at night out looking for it x at least 2 vehicles. Where I am now they have bags everywhere that dogs are walked that are refilled weekly and provide bins in various spots for the used bags to go in. And dont forget in Sa unlike at least Qld and perhaps elsewhere if an animal gets into your secure backyard and takes on your dog and gets injured your dog has a defence (as do you as an owner who had a dog securely contained). Same if an intruder comes in from memory too. Other states will declare a dog dangerous without any thought to circumstances.
  9. Thing is if your dog gets away from you - it wouldnt matter if you had an injury wouldnt you be off in pursuit best you could simply to stop your dog running on a road or something. This bloke was 'what could i do I had a fractured foot' well dude you couldnhave hobbled as quick as possible. The old lady was just lucky the council guys turned up when they did and then did everything they could in the situation. Thatb particular council was always 'punish the deed' and 'punish the owner' as it should be and were good to deal with rather than worrying about breed. And remember in SA unlike some other states they give a dog in a secure b ackyard a defence if some other animal wanders in and gets hurt (have heard of other states that declare a dog dangerous even if its in its own secure backyard and say a cat wanders in and gets hurt). Completely different to the subject but they have logical dog laws instead of knee jerk reactions. And the council we are in have doggy bags everywhere along walkways and have a number of bins for use too (more would be better but the fact we havde some is great) . As for that 'owner' and his dog it is a shame they cant ban him from ownnign another as obviously when this dog is put down he will just go and get another big 'tough' dog without any acknowledgement that he was in the wrong and there are responsibilities in regard to being in control of your dog in public.
  10. It was on tv - the owner was clueless and when seemingly asked what he thought in regard to the dog being taken away (his dog) by council andmaybe being put down. oh well will just get another one. He didn't seem all that devastated did say wasnt much he could do as he had a fractured foot. His attitude just came across as shocking - as one of those owners that should not be owning any type of dog. And yet showed the collar - no extra harness or choke chain to control the dog just a normal flat collar that appeared to have ripped through. And regardless on attacking the small dog once the council workers got it off its target it then turned on the old lady who would have been in a state by then? Human aggressive dog - doubt the owner will be getting it back.
  11. Wonder drug here too. Shows improvement from the first one of the 4 week course (she has it twice a year) about $33 each too . Our dog is 13 two weeks ago she was very very sore (and being treagted with rapigel for those sore days) since then has so far had two injections plus her joint guard powder and this morning she decided she was going to nick off and run with a very fast and lively border collie. Even ducked past me first grab (to restrain her since other dog was heading back where we came) and did her best to keep pace.
  12. OK what about firefighters? They seem to have a similar shift to the FIFO worker and really no onde knows what is ahppening at the kennel perhaps as a regular the dog may spend time with the owners not just in a run all the time (many years ago our family dog would occassionally go into kennels that were run by the owners on their property and they would bring regulars inside to the home environment when possible). This dog would also not be alone but have the first dog as a companion to also learn from. Reckon it also depends on the dog ours is far happier to stay inside on her own during the day than she'd ever be at some kind of 'doggy daycare' place.
  13. As SirWJ said you dont have to pay the fee as the walks are in public areas and they no longer have special parking you have to park in Adelaider at least anywhere you can find a spot (and with the Adel Oval being redone that little car park will not be there either). Thats why they push so hard for people to pay on the day (it was much more obvious at the last one I went to). But yes the year the dog was throwing up all the way around and then the mention that the RSPCA had parvo go through soon after put me off going back for these walks. And after the emails they sent me (I must be on a mailing list) Id rather not have to dodge a 'campaign' booth halfway round for their current 'campaigns' like they did one year when they were campaigning inn regard to pig farms. I was there to walk the dog not have activist images shoved in my face.
  14. I think this is what my families old dog use to get - they had to be removed surgically as they would ulcerate and bleed and they wouldnt heal from that point. I will never own a male entire dog due to this happening to the family dog - they put him on female hormones but when the dosage was changed one grew right through his tail and was one of the many issues that saw him put down in the end. This was over a decade ago and I have no idea why desexing wasnt offered back then. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perianal_gland_tumor
  15. So does the new version reintroduce the contact sheet as its replacement is/was just a tool to make it easier for people to steal online photos (that web thing).
  16. You should be able to compare cameras on www.dpreview.com far better than choice or often the local camera store (though they should be able to explain the differences).
  17. The is a Canon SX 40 (I think 40 is the latest model) is a upgrade on my point and shoot and has a massive zoom on it. Just when you use the massive zoom to the extreme you have to hold the camera very very still (and hold breathe) as the slightest movement can cause camera shake but thats the same for all cameras. Found it http://www.canon.com.au/For-You/Digital-Cameras/PowerShot-SX40-HS
  18. Was fantastic on Saturday to be able to use the 'big' camera for concert photos - link to the report below. Was very dark settings were 1600 iso usually 4.5 aperture and between 1/125th and 1/160th shutter speed. http://www.barnesphotography.com.au/pseudoecho/index.htm I did look for laser type types but they pretty much had only the small spotlights and the ones you can see now and again in the pictures.
  19. There used to be two shih tzus that were left offlead (in an on lread park) that use to rush and tag team tryimg to get past me to my dog while the owner just stood away laughing. Second time they came and a lewt fly with a few kicks (missed but they backed off) owner wasnt paughing so much and I have no idea what he was doing the day I came around the corner and saw them too late (third time) so when one came at me I just charged at it planning to make it a football and within a metre it slammed on the brakes and ran the other way whil the second one also backed off. Fourth time they came out of the bushes and some girl was in charge of them I just let fly and they took off (didnt contact them). Reported from the second time to the council and they were going to try and find them to educate them on proper dog control Another time years before I was walking my dog down a street when two rushed out from across the road as we went past - the Bull terrier just ended up behind us following while the alpha dog stood in the middle of the road eyeballing me and growling - my response? I growled 'gittttt' back at him while walking along the path at the exact same speed I wasnt going to stop watching him as he was a big nasty crossbred thing and not a sole about (I didnt know about reportoing them then) and he lost interest once we were beyond his territory (same time the other dog went back as well)
  20. Dog used to love it but last time we went finding a car park was a nightmare even getting there early and someone had a dog that threw up about 4 times on the way around so must have been sick with something yet the owner walked the whole distance instead of thinking to stop and take the dog home. Luckily it was a cool day and mine had no interest in the shared water as that dog was somewhere up front. We no loner live close by And these days the dog gets worn out by her morning walk anyway which includes offlead time.
  21. If I've got the exposure right on the day (and that's the target since I came through the world of film cameras so you had to get it right or the shot was ruined) I just crop if needed and thats it straight out of the camera. Obviously for orders if there is something like flies or mnure that can be removed easily (ie 10 seconds) I'll do i but mostly its just a small crop to centre and thats it. I don't have time to edit 1000 or more shots after being out all day. Bit different from studio/portrait or somethign like weddings where they expect the photos to look more than just freezing the action at that moment
  22. wow that sounds awesome - well done for being allowed to stay the whole time! I've got my first one in about a week so will see how that goes.
  23. Roxys mum - did they mention how long you could stay to take photos? Generally at the bigger shows the photographers get a few songs in front of the crowd barrier and then they have to leave at the big concerts (ent cent type) they are not allowed to stasy all performance. Yes agree if you have a good reason to ask and do so they might just give permission and these days with everyone and their dog having a smartphone or I phone its only a few acts such as Bryan adams who seem to havde issues with photos as taken en masse there is no market for them beyond review etc. And really when the bands get their own photographer on tour the shots are amazing (Bon Jovi) even compared to what fans with good cameras can get.
  24. I have my own website with the email contact for any enquiries. There are some photos on Redbubble (waste of time - I did go through and try and promote but handful of views and comments and thats it) Some on a Mr Site website (I do get a few orders time to time of old photos through here) Many on Cafepress (this seems to pay for itself but since they reduced everything to their marketplace pricing thats all no extra cheques over the top) Many on a stock photo site which I do need to delete some and upload new ones when in one day have time) this gets enough interst to pay for itself but thats it.
  25. When you put them on facebook - the low res ones - just note that if anyoen would like the full sizeimage the price is 'whatever' and they can pay you through paypal or paymate or can contact you for bank details. Then you dont have to say no please pay its there in front of them. What is the cost for well your upload amount your time to find it your time to store the image, the upkeep of your camera, etc
