If so why could they sell it? I have heard the tales of people saying flour has weevils in it yet I never remember ever seeing that happen (not that long ago I threw out the old flour some of which was still in the bags it came it. I threw it out because the use by date was about 2 years earlier - but it was still white and still no bugs at all. I have seen icky bugs on old discarded dog food that wasnt picked up and rolled under something but other gross bugs were also over near the window and looked more like fly larvae.

I remember the family dog rarely had a lead on - he was always stay with us or nearby. The afghan would takeoff therefore she always had to have a lead on unless my mother took her - for some reason she would come back to my mother when called only (but then she did nearly get hit by a bus once when she got out without a lead once). You could also tie your dog up outside at the shops and know no one would go near it and leave the dog alone til you came out. Neither of the male dogs were desexed (though after what happened with the golden retirever I would NEVER leave a male dog entire - he got benign lumps that ulcerated and had to be taken off surgically to avoid blood infection and was on stilbestrol every day when older) but the afghan was and must have been some time after we got her as my brother had a short lived attempt at the showring (she had been a show dog but fought with the other bitch that the breeder had so they got rid of her luckily for her my mother knew the breeder and took the dog - she also while knowing how to stand would in the ring stand there and start to sag in the back and not hold her head right she didnt want to be a show dog).

Have often seen the ads for 'regular' treatment of ticks and fleas on tv yet being in SA we do not have ticks like they have in the eastern states and really dont see a need to treat for fleas unless the dog actually ends up picking them up somewhere. Normal worming tablets we get from the vet as needed (your vet may say the dog doesnt need to be done that often if it isnt in at risk areas) - except heartworm that one due to mozzies carrying it is a must.

But then at least back in the 80s there wasnt a big business in the cross bred oodles so you had the options to get puppies from the RSPCA, breeders, pet shops and the odd newspaper ad for those 'oops' mongrels that were usually fairly cheap. And the oops mongrels were still raised in the home not in a puppy factory Now you can buy oodles from online, from a millions paper ads in addition to the other places and people think its a good thing to breed a few cross bred litters and sell for hundreds each (remember some relatives who did eventually get the untrained oodle cross desexed though it did have at least two litters). And you also have the paris wannabes that think buying a cute white fluffy is a good status thing (usually at the high price from the internet or oodle breeders) - still cant believe people like the bloke who was selling out of a car in a car park meeting would actually have people paying hundreds for a puppy. But right sales pitch you can push them and succeed in selling anywhere now. Back in the 'old days' no one could seel a dog that way especally a 'mongrel'.

Vet nurse obvoiusly doesnt understand that its a huge courtesy that you even warn your neighbours. I know someone who encourages wild birds to their yard - cats get the hose then they get trapped if they come back again - end of story then its their owners problem to get them backfrom I guess the pound.

And like any animal bite that breaks the skin there is a chance of infection. Always go to the doctors and get it checked. Cat was unfortunate having owners who believe that such little creatures need more than the inside of a house to roam. Where I grew up roaming cats were also at risk of having firecrackers tied to them or being shoved in mailboxes as the local hoon blew up both inaddition to cars, dogs, illness, other cats.

At least get vet adv ice if you are giving the dog adhoc antibiotics (by mouth not topical application) - they are suppose to have a course of antibiotics same as humans to stop things getting resistant.

Do Relatively Unprotective Dogs 'step Up' If Necessary?
rubiton replied to Pete.the.dog's topic in General Dog Discussion
Dogs will threaten people entering their territory without owners permission (as they see it). And some are very convincing - as for would they go through with the threat? Well guess that depends on the dog and on the persons reaction to the threat. Our roller door got left up and dog was put outside the back. Well after a while she decided to wander around the front yard. Was seen by the ranger who was going past and he decided to knock on the door and ask if we knew the door was up and if the dog out front was ours. Apparently when he crossed into the property she did challenge and threaten him (he reckoned he did think she wasnt going to let him get to the door). As soon as one of us appeared she was all happy and friendly. She normally loves meeting people and is fine for visitors that are greeted by us. (Note in SA dogs are permitted to be protective of their own property towards someone/something 'trespassing' - its in the state laws somewhere). -
Has Anyone Ever Boarded Their Pets At This Place In Sa?
rubiton replied to julesluvscavs's topic in General Dog Discussion
I wondered about this apparent 'diet' to - my dog does not get things like egg, milk, etc (was on the no go list from the vet). She gets normal food and seriously she is happy with that (given the choice between human treat and dog treat the dog treat wins every time). Rather than encourage that would put me off using the place so not sure why that was used in their advertising blurb in the paper. -
We also use the emu oil from fidos and she does end up very soft and fluffy

Dog growls she backed away - hello does anyone watch its me or the dog or Caesar?? Simple solution - dont give the dog any bones they can live without them yes it avoids the problem but in the short term avoid the dog realising it can get away with 'resource guarding'. Later on get a decent trainer as there are other more simple less confronting ways of teaching the dog its not the boss and it can never growl at the boss EVER. Our dog dug up an old discoloured crumbly bone from soemwhere and tried to gulp down a big chunk - I didn't quite know what it was but I hadnt goven it to her so didn't want it swallowed. Note when you stick you hand in a dogs mouth and grab a chunk of bone and it tries to chew said bone it does actually hurt. I got the bone learnt that dogs molars hurt when you stick your finger in there and made sure dog got something she could have instgead of the bone which was gotten rid of. Only reason I got chewed was she was desperately trying to get it down her throat and was finishing that movement when I shoved the hand in she let go of the bone at that stage. But then I have also grabbed her food bowl after giving it to her after forgetting to add something - in that case bowl and dog came back inside and she watched me add whatever it was and then she got it back with extra.

YOur only spot where all photos are saved are the computer? Move to a hard drive or burn to DVD - never ever only have one copy of photos only stored on the computer for any length of time. I use to back up to CD, DVD and hard disk and then after several months (well 6 or more) computer version got deleted to make more space. Currently I'm way behind on the 'CD' though I think that just might be a second DVD as they no longer fit on one CD per day - when its all sorted the old ones will be deleted to clear space on the main computer

And 'usually' does not mean 'always'. This dog would have weighed 60kg on a skinny day, and it came from behind and went straight for Jack's neck. I didn't get the chance to come between it and my dog. Think you got a response in while I was typing mooper - I was responsing to the question about not understanding the difference between dog aggressive and human aggressive. In your situation would have been hard to react either way

Just because a dog attacks other dogs does not mean it will attack humans. This is why if owners get between an oncoming agressive dog and their own and break its concetration on their dog they will usually drive the oncoming dog away. My dog was approached by two iffkead dogs once and I got in front of her and told them to git outta it and as soon I broke their stare on her they turned and backed off then ran of to where I guess the owner was. I have only come across one human agressive dog and he rushed to the middle of the road as his friend circled around but kept a few metres behind us - I told it to git (really long giiiiiittttttt til we were clear) it eyeballed me and held my gaze and stood in the middle of the road and growled back. I kept going along the path at the same pace as when it and its mate rushed out and once we had gone out of what it considered its 'territory' it went back inside its yard. Did not look at my dog at all it looked at me (was only later when I thought about it worked out it paid no attention to my dog).

If I need to kill flies I point the can up and spin a circle and hopefully catch the flies as they go through it - if that does work I stalk with the can. Surface spray inly works if they walk across where it has been sprayed (and it does work this way though even on the big ones). The regular puff out sprays do seem to be overkill but perhaps if you dont have fly screens something like that would be a short term solution (til you get screens) as mozzies and other things can come in and mozzies can carry nasty diseases if you are unlucky. Otherwise stalk and spray - from the death toll I found beside a window the sprays do work. We use the Naturgard one with has pyrethins amongst its ingredients.

How Hot Is Too Hot To Walk Your Dogs?
rubiton replied to chichihuahua's topic in General Dog Discussion
Too hot we dont walk (like over 28 degrees) and if its humid we dont walk. People and horses handle dry heat better as they sweat and if you collapsse on the path when out walking you wont do the dog any good. And from the very hot and humid weather lately our dog wasnt quite herself til the weather went back to normal so reckon humid is worse for dogs too. -
Can Anything Be Done To Keep Cats Away?
rubiton replied to ruthless's topic in General Dog Discussion
They are small so why arent they kept inside houses!!! First they make a mess in others yards, they kill baby birds (they two were safe in our yard despite falling out of the nest as the mother bird was hanging around til a cat got both took them away and returned them the following week without their insides), and owners who let them roam dont seem to understand they are targets for cars, dogs, teenagers with firecrackers, etc (there are worse things than and ice cube or a cat trap). And after the birds any cat in our yard will get sorted with the back door being opened for the dog to go out there (she loves to chase cats and its her yard!! no she doesnt catch them she just likes to chase them now rats whether they be grey ones or bush rats she does try to catch...) -
I've left the dog from 6am til think it was just after 8pm and both of us were in another state for the day (dog didn't seem too fussed but then she was probably asleep all day - was worse when we got back late one night and it was after her feed time)-was unavoidable at the time. There was a backup plan in case the plane didn't work out though.

Breeders Who Raise Puppies On Raw/barf/premium Dry
rubiton replied to a topic in General Dog Discussion
Agree with megan either research your natural/barf/etc one well to make sure your puppy is getting everything needed to grow well or use the good quality commercial food that is around. -
Had to put ointment into the family dog many years ago. He had that and his female hormone - growled at me over the tablets so when he did the lay down thing I just put the ointment in as the vet explained to. Was easy as (he refused the tablets til later so got the eye stuff instead as he wasnt getting away with growling no matter what sort of senile separation anxiety he had - I lived interstate parents had gone away and I picked him up from the kennel he wasnt moving from their room unless he had to and months before had started the senile separation anxiety even if I was there. Very freaky to see when the eyes glaze over and they wont respond to you)

Call the council - best someone picks it up rather than left to wander and perhaps be injured. Talked the the council about some nasty dogs and also asked them about after hours and they said to call the number anyway as it goes through to an after hours number and someone is contacted til quite late so early evening a ranger should be around. Today is Saturay and the dog patrol was out driving around 830 this morning (well I saw him taking photos of cars parked the opposite direction to traffic on a roadside so guess the dog guy does general fines too) so they are around after hours.

These were the only thing that the dog had other than the ID food when she was the gastro problem (taking one now and again) and they did not upset her at all compared to everything else that tooks months to tolerate again.

I tried the poke the other day (someone had a jack russell at work and it didn't response of react to no (was trying to sniff stuff it shouldnt). A poke & 'hey' had an immediate result (in that the dog stopped and moved away from that area). Simple things that break the concentration are the sort of things that everyone can learn from the tv shows as opposed to the more extreme actions to the 'red zone' dogs. And have noticed that in the latest serious a lot of the dogs have lesser issues such as not wanting to walk on a lead or not wanting to go up the stairs, etc not so much of the 'gunna take an arm off' type dogs. Last night the last story was a red heeler that barked and barked and barked and barked and barked.....

Since they are not a food source but a TREAT I wouldn't worry if they are 'rubbish' or not. I eat human biscuits each day but certainly dont have them for a main meal (quite fascinating how much oil seeps out of them when you leave a human plain dry biscuit on a hand towel). Anyway we use to get the supercoat ones that came in boxes but havent seem them for sometime. Have also used teh ones in the red boxes but they are quite big and cant be bothered breaking them in half eachmorning (we use a biscuit as payment for her getting the paper from the front yard). So now we have been using the new Supercoat ones that come in the plastic bag thingy (more expensive than the others ones though). Am currently using the lite and mature ones but the other variety was fine too.

If you are at the beach you are standing on one massive reflector - the sand. You have natural light then you have the reflected light from the sand and if near the water more reflected light from there. The image below - the horses chest and neck is actually being 'lit up' by the reflection from some sand over a crossing on the ground - this image was not processed beyond cropping. That was only a little bit a few metres wide so image what a whole beach of it does.
