  1. Cut off the overhanging branches - those bats carry nasty diseases and in most places you have the right to remove branches of plants that are overhanging over your property. So glad we dont have those creatures here (hopefully they dont migrate way south ). Hendra virus comes from them and its deadly.
  2. I have this fridget magnet too - they only have a one page website with opening hours but no further details.
  3. We have used it along with the choke chain (lead clips through both the choke chain and harness ring) - harness stops the choke chain from getting tight and makes it harder to pull and choke chain stop sher getting her head down to pull. Very effective if something like a cat runs in front of her and we need something to stop her - also effective in stopping her pulling. With only the choke chain she will pull til its tight and happily try to choke. With only harness she will get her head down and pull HARD but together it worked to stop both happening.
  4. BUt if you believe that to protect other dog owners (since you think your dog is fine) you should get the titre testing. Wihtout that you may be right you may be wrong and what if your dog happens to be one that doesnt hold the immunity and infects others and the environment after picking up a deadly disease.
  5. Speak to your vet about the reaction the dog had last time. OUrs got her tetanus 18 months back and vet said she was carry on for about 30 minutes afterwards (im thinking at the time what the but guess was she was all on the toe for a while after we got home). If you choose not to vaccinate get the testing done and make sure that the antibodies are high enough dont just go oh well its all good to leave it.
  6. It does seem an awful lot. We tend to feed a handful of dry food and canned food at night (think in the scale was about 350g total incl bowl) and a food ball with a couple of handfuls of dry food in the morning. if you arent feeding enough the dog will lose weight but its better as mentioned earlier to underfeed and increase than overfeed and have to get the weight off. Also how much the dog is being exercised also should be a factor in deciding how much to feed too.
  7. Isnt there an emergency vet at marion or anzac hwy? Or there is the option of the mobile vet but since he is from slightly northern suburbs going to the local emergency vet hospital down that way would be closer for everyone
  8. I stick them right across the centre of the image. If someone wants to pinch it and use it as a background then my name will slowly burn into their screen (well thats my thought or they can just stare at my name across it). The previous version was a bit stronger but still works I can still see clearly which are my pinched photos on Facebook!
  9. Would really have a look at www.dpreview.com as there may be point and shoot cameras out there that would suit the purpose. Have seen a few that look a lot like DSLRs but are not but apparently boast the no lag and decent zoom. Thing is if you want an SLR you can get a basic one such as the 1000D for about $600 brand new at the moment BUT then you will want some decent lenses and they tend to be around $1000 for say a 70-300mm black lens and much much more for the grey ones. If you really want to get into taking pics as a big hobby it may be worth it (but in addition to camera and lens you then need a bag, cards, batteries, neck straps if you want the bouncy ones, lens hoods since with canon they generally dont come with them unles its the mega expensive lenses, etc) But it would be crazy to buy all the stuff and then lose interest and leaving it in a cupboard gathering dust.
  10. You also have to remember most dogs are NOT human aggressive and if you can break their fix on your dog they will back off (guess thats the 'owning' that Ceasar talks about). Thats why getting in front of your dog and growling and yelling etc should drive a dog off. I got so sick of a couple of shh tzus that they charged me from a distance and I charged them... I won they turned and ran for it about ametre away. Then there was the loose SWF that growled at us and I drove it away from us to try and avoid it thinking it had chased us from its area (this one was to the side not directly in front but walkig past would have left it out of sight). Human aggressive dogs will eyeball you and display behaviour towards you and not your dog - I have come across one dog like this and we just kept walking at the same pace on the path (it was in the middle of a road) as I told it to GGGIIIIIIITTTTT in a growl that matched it. Once we were past what it considered its territory it stopped and went back to the yard it came from (its deputy got around behind us and followed at a distance til again we passed that invisible boundary).
  11. You should be able to wake up a dog for the other side of a room - they aint like people the slightest sound and they will wake up. AS for the rest try training it - easier they sitting there sayin g 'oh this is a living hell'. Go back to basics and remember you have your dog there to help too (dogs learn off other dogs and that means the visitor can learn off your dog - to stop your dog picking up any habits just reinforce YOUR training with your own dog).
  12. Its gone to Canon in Sydney - there is the extra cost for the courier as well as whatever the repairs will cost (apparently they will advise quote through the shop I put it in with and then fix it). So add a week or so for being non Sydney based. Ashanali - thats what my fear was that it would stop working right when I was trying to take photos of an important race. I was able to get by at the equestrian event as once it was taking pics I could do the burst mode style - not my preferred option but gave me the photos I needed. It had been doing it now and again but once a month is not a problem but 50-70 times in one day was a problem. And I did get a lot of photos through it in mad march week. The 50D can go away under warranty and they can send it back once its fixed and can show its as good as the 40D which people tell me its suppose to be.
  13. A month a could cope with, 5 weeks is cutting it close and 6 weeks is past the big raceday. The 50D will go next under warranty but once I have a working camera back I will be a lot happier (50D takes photos in focus sometimes - its better with IS off and with athe microadjustment but not good enough for what it should be able to do Im considering trying and seeing how I am at manual focus of a moving object after not having to try that for about 7 years!). The fact that only a handful work makes me think Im taking pics like I did 15 years ago but Im hoping those handful are enough to get by for now. I do have the little 350D as the back up but I dont want to overwork that camera. My 40D stopped responding every time to the shutter - it was intermittent and no amount of battery changes, hot, cold, different lens etc was making a massive difference. I had been planning to send it off in May after the big raceday but after the weekend decided it wasnt worth waiting and one camera had to go so the one that takes focused shots but may not respond to the shutter went - last time this happened it was the 10D with a similar intermittent fault. Turned out to be the shutter and once it was sent back it was all nice and clean and firmware updated can only hope this wonderful camera is repaired and returned like that too.
  14. Just wondering how long others have experienced between dropping the camera in to be sent away and actually seeing the camera again? Only time I ever sent one off it was gone for over 3 months and apparently waiting a month for approval after a quote (which had been approved for repair as soon as it was received but message was lost) - canon rep assures me at that time it was due to a massive stuff up in a changeover of computer systems and its much 'faster' now.
  15. Came around a blind corner once and a bloke (who would have been close to too old to be on a skateboard) mistimed what he was doing - I assume the plan was to jump the kerb then we appeared so he took evasive action leaping off the skateboard but still coming straight for us. Dog jumped to the side hackles up and just barked at him - she was really put out by his actions. I could see what happened and all was fine but she was all on alert for a few minutes. I told her how good she was as she reacted to what she perceived as a threat as one day it might be someone who actually is a threat flying at us.
  16. Yep - i was last to bed and the dog is there glaring at me and wouldn't do as she was told. Thinking why is the dog acting like that then realised that she hadn't been fed (thats what you get for going to bed without being fed). There is no way she goes to bed now and gets all upset if it really looks like she's going to miss out. Once I fed her that night the normal dog was back.
  17. Would only buy from within Australia due to warranty for cameras. Lenses buy whereever youlike but cameras its always better to buy within Australia (unless you want to take the gamble but my 50D is on the verge of going back on warranty depending of it this microadjustment thing fixes the issue)
  18. Sounds like something has happened eg kids teasing the dog and dog has had enough (rehome should be the only option not PTS since its not the dogs fault if it has been teased). PLease don't get another dog while you have the kids and please rehome this dog where it will without kids or talk to the save a shepherd people (often see their email posts at work and they certainly seem to know how to find good homes for the dogs).
  19. If you give them somewhere to dig as well as trying whatever you can in areas you don't want the dog to dig they usually work out that they are allowed to dig in the particular area. Ours comes back after a walk and bolts for the tree and just loves to frantically dig - if she even considers that in the grass she's in trouble and told off but left to dig around/under the tree. When she was allowed bones she would also bury them in the dirt areas of the yard and rarely went near the grass once she understood where she was allowed to dig.
  20. As kja said - if you derive an income from selling photos (or photographic work) you can call yourself professional. Now whether your work is of a good standard well thats up for debate. Basing it on a 'majority income' is silly since many like me that specialise in a particular area could not live off the income from photography but we are professional photographers. However would expect as kja said for professionals to have the registered business name, ABN, the required insurance, and have professional standards in how they conduct business. In a perfect world you expect their work to be of a high standard and know how to make the best of the working environment but well thats a judement call for the customer I guess.
  21. What happens with the dogs they leave at checkpoints? Saw a couple of the recent episodes and they had a 'dog drop off point' and mentioned them being 'sent home'. Do the organisers arrange for the dogs to be transported back to a home base where the competitors collect them from or something?
  22. The eyes moving quickly is REM (dream) sleep. The rest just sound like the dog is chasing something or running around madly. They can only 'imagine' what they see during the waking hours - that would be the difference with us since we can imagine stuff from tv etc (eg the posters OH richmond dream) whereas dogs could only imagine chasing whatever they have seen/chased. Sometimes the dog does make very odd sounds like whimpering but a click of the fingers wakes her up out of it - if you are worried just make a sound that wakes her up.
  23. Also does she obey you at home? Often manners on walks are influenced by small things at home - our dog ignored me when let off the lead in the park. So I tried the NILIF (nothing in life is free) exercises (such as making her drop & stay in the same place for 20 minutes such as at your feet while watching tv - if they get up and move you just put them back in the same place and release later when you choose), we walk through the door back inside first unless she is told to go before us (otherwise she gets called all the way back outside and has to wait), etc. The other thing is when she gets too excited before going for a walk we just sit ther and stare at tv for a few more minutes - dog goes from too excited to calm pretty quickly now since being clam means heading out the door quicker. Just stop what you are doing and sit down and stare at the tv. BUt try and find a good obedience club or trainer as your dog just sounds like she needs training (as do you to give her the right signals and for her to understand what youwant). Our dog still gets very excited about cats and will try and charge and lunge if they are close to the path - I taught her left and right years ago and its very handy as even when bouncing against the lead and harness as she will bounce left or right and clam down once we got past (I use a harness and choke chain together which stops her choking or getting her head down to pull but I weigh twice what she does so at worse I can hold her but a husky cross malamute would be a lot bigger and stronger).
  24. Have used its a dog shop in the past and order usually turned up next day (however being in Adelaide not surprising). Only place I could find that had felt lined leather collars.
  25. Thats correct you are missing the smal rectangular bit that clicks into the top of the tripod (it is screwed into the base of the camera OR lens)
