Labsrule made a fantastic offer. Its just sad buying a working/gundog breed and then leaving it in the backyard (when the family tires of bothering to take it out for a walk) and then not wanting it in the car (dirty dog in car even to the vet) even for emergency things. They can live like this for 15 old years. My aunts dog wasnt allowed in the house like the cats were because of bladder issues as a puppy (ie excitement - they didn't bother with training). The kids walked the dog when they were younger but as the dog got older the walks got less and while they did what they thought was best (naive dog owners thought it was fine to be in a backyard forever and insisted it would have been 'scared' even allowed access to the laundry on 42 degree days or bitterly cold days' - they didn't even try just to see what would happen if they opened the door and invited the dog in to just that area). Eventually the dog had 'excrement on its rear end' so they wouldnt put it in the car and go to the vet to get it sorted. But the dog was still getting by. Eventually it collapsed and was whimpering at the furthest part of the yard to it (other side of a bedroom wall but far away from windows that it could see in if the curtains werent closed) for a day and a half (night day night) before they finally called someone to come and put the dog down - 36 hours. Yes they put up some kind of shelter but really any animal down overnight and found that way in the morning should be panic stations not wait another 24 hours before frantically finding someone. And they want to get another dog but not a cute fluffy one coz you cant leave them in the yard and they want one to live in the yard as an ornament again. At least the OH friends seemingly wont just buy one at the petshop which is exactly where my relatives would get one from. Perhaps they all need to just buy a furreal pet - they move on their own they look real from a distance, they dont cost to feed look after, come 'trained' and most importantly you can stick them in a big cupboard when you get sick of them

Put the focus on AI Servo. Put it on high speed multiple shots (the one with the numerous frames and H on the top display - its in the instruction book but I cant remember the name of the setting) Put the ISO on 400, Put the speed on 1/1000th and adjust the aperture as required for the light (any sun will help and make sure its behind you - F8 or F6.3 but if you have to go to 5.6 try it). Point the camera at the grass when checking the light meter in the viewfinderas that will give you a better reading than anything that catches the sky Once set up pan with the dog (hold the shutter button down and let it take a burst of pics) and as long as the camera and lens are working correctly (yes the 75-300 lens you have) you should get some photos in focus. If the dog is running towards you the camera will find it harder but should get a few focused pics (I find the camera sometimes keeps up with the backend not the front end depending on how fast the dog charges at you). Don't expect every shot to be in focus but you should get several that work out ok - and remember to keep the centre focus square on the dog (you can set it to the centre focus point but in AI Servo it should default to it anyway. The more sun the better it will work the darker it is the harder the camera will find it to focus especially on darker dogs. Forget the shallow depth of field to start with as it makes it harder to get a clear shot with action stuff first up.

How Do U Report Them If U Dont Know Where They Live?
rubiton replied to stef_83's topic in General Dog Discussion
There use to be two shih tzus that would be taken to the local park without leads and they would rush and charge other dogs (as a dog would if something entered its own backyard). Owners found this funny. They had a go at us four times (once I saw them first and when they charged I charged and they got within a metre and then turned and ran well clear). I reported it to the council after the third time (first three times it was a bloke last time was a teenage girl who had no control) told them times and where. For a few days there was a person sitting at a seated area in the park who had not been there before or since - I assumed he was from the council. The council also gave me a number that until well into the evening would divert to a person who could pass on the 'they are there now' to the ranger (and for anything else such as loose dogs out wandering). The rangers are often out and about after hours and on weekends too. Anyway I mentioned this to someone who also knew other dog walkers that had had issues with the same dogs - I told them I had spoken to the council that this moron needed some advice on controlling their dogs and that the others should contact the council if they had more info to locate who this bloke was. Heard nothing for a few months then we came home late one evening and spotted someone walking two Shih tzus on lead past the end of our street. Hopefully they are the same ones and the owner now understands how to walk them properly (since rushing bigger dogs will eventually end badly). -
Choke chain in conjunction with harness (choke chain cant be pulled tight but the pressure stops the head getting down) and it works as does stopping if she starts to pull and absolutely no stopping and sniffing. They can sniff and walk along just fine there is no need to stop.

Ours use to react and watch any cats that ere on the shows and then would try and look behind the tv to see where they went. She eventually decided it was some weird human trickery and the cat ws not really there - however will still watch occasionally if dogs are there or a really distressed cat. Other day she was staring and cocking her head at something that didn't have any animals in it (was a wide shot of some sort) & use to watch the zoom zoom ad a few years back. However head shot of a person and its instant loss of interest in the TV .

Our family had a Golden Retriever - wonderful dog but he didn't like young kids. Think its more the temperament of the animal than the breed between those two and if you prefer the type of dog they are. GR require a lot of grooming and then the undercoat comes out twice a year I assume GSD are like labradors in that they just shed throughout the year. They also had different medical conditions they are more prone to as well. Bolth are smart breeds and will respond to training quite well.

Are these gates padlocked? Always padlock gates as if anyone could open them you will never know if its kids going past to or from school or if its someone trying to steal them or someone checking the house out, etc. If someone breaks through a padlock you know its more than problem school kids

Last thing I would be saying is 'please call your dog'. It would be booted before I actually let it touch my dog let alone stop to speak to a useless owner. 'Git outta it' is first then the foot stamp and 'git outta it' then the charge at it and if it still comes at me (since my dog would be behind me) then aim with the foot. Owner is welcome to come fetch their dog anytime (this is if its obvious dog is not a puppy and is obviously a threat and owner is not dashing over with lead to grab dog). If you break their attention on your dog most dogs will back off to your command unless they truly nasty and human aggressive.
-
SHe is allowed to walk slightly ahead as long as she isnt pulling and listens to any commands and returns to proper heel when needed (and stops for roads). And to the left not in front of me and NOT crossing to the right for any reason at all. No stopping to sniff she can sniff on the move without a problem there is no need to stop.

Think it was on one of those Animal cop shows - technically dogs can live without meat in their diet but they wont necessarily thrive but cats must have meat or they get somethng nasty wrong with them and die. Like others eat whatever you like yourself but dont push your choices onto a prey animal indeed buy something that grazes and thrives on plants.

And the reason has been well documented why Sarbi can't come back as the others would - that she disappeared for months so they cannot be sure of what she was or wasnt exposed to and therefore needs to do 6 months quarantine in Dubai before coming back.
-
Well since she is in there for cartrophan twice a year plus vaccinations she does get the once over and anything odd queried. Now she's over 10 they also do a annualish blood test too.

People Who Work Fulltime And Have A Puppy.
rubiton replied to Whipitgood's topic in General Dog Discussion
Think GayleK has nailed it - and they have to learn that you will go out and not come back for hours at some stage may as well be as puppies. -
They get bored though - about 2pm its are we going yet are we going yet??? (yes the dog has come to work when its been 42 degrees over summer). And also there is the problem of dogs that are not 'office trained' and leave messages under tables (at our work its been a small dog thing - bigger they are better they seemed to be trained).
-
Tell the animal libbers - they are good at campaigning other things and using live rabbits like that is cruel.

My old 10D would do A3 sized prints with ease. The megapixels will not make a difference unless you want to go the size of a house (and then youd go raw anyway).

Not Sure If I Should Listen To My Vet's Advice...
rubiton replied to chichihuahua's topic in General Dog Discussion
Either vaccinate in accordance with what a vet you trust says or titre test regularly and KNOW what immunity your dog has. Better than reading stuff on the internet and not bothering to do either in the belief your dog will be fine (til its unlucky and happens to one of those who didnt hold their immunity to parvo and gets exposed). -
CLearly the Tamron - a wide angle lens would not give you the options the 18-250mm would. Just remember try not to go below 50mm with close ups or you will get big head short legs issue

Not Sure If I Should Listen To My Vet's Advice...
rubiton replied to chichihuahua's topic in General Dog Discussion
Reckon the OP is the perfect example of how many will go 'oh its ok to be 3 yearly' without realising it is a different product (have read info saying the exact same thing that the three yearly one is different). Titre test or vaccinate but your vet if you trust their judgement is the best place to get info too much random stuff on the internet (and opinions) -
Using the DSLR - Manual - I like to control what is being taken not let the camera decide. Only time is on AV or TV if its a head/rug shot and horse will be swapping from sun and shade too quickly to change settings but otherwise 95 percent of the time manual.

Good that they are getting exposure - shame its on that waste of airtime show.

Thats weird it has issues with noise at iso 800 - none of mine 10D, 350D, 40D even teh lemon 50D had any noise issues on correctly exposed images (under exposed yes but was the same back in film days). I did get good iamges that were fine at least to 8x12 inch from the 50D at iso 1600 and 2000 before it stopped working on nearly everything. Live view is weird It is a big heavy camera like all the prosumer and up DSLRs. Quite noisy when it takes photos too comapred to other models.

Get good quality prints done at professional labs. If all else fails they should last (though basically as technology changes its a matter of upgrading stuff onto the new system such as copying VHS to DVD - not as good as the original but better than nothing). Oh and film negatives do degrade over time - I have ones from 1987 that were starting to have issues about 6 or 7 years ago and then about 3 years ago it was clear when I was scanning the negs to DVDs that the older ones were clearly different to the newer ones that scanned as sharp as youd expect. The really old negs from the 40s however do keep very well but they are different again to most colour negs people have from the 80s.

Well there is a difference between US and Australia so cant understand why its assumed its all the same. They eat cats and dogs in various places in Asia and its just their culture - if they can catch it they eat it these people also live in mud huts and cows are nearly of equivalent worth as wives so is there an issue with those countries?

You can buy packs of jewel cases for a couple of dollars from places like Cheap as Chips and Officeworks also stock jewel cases. I only use spindle DVDs and never have a problem finding cases at these two places. I tried two officeworks stores - nope no longer there and the place taken with pocket storage and other stuff. Tried Big W, Target, etc nope nothing yet plenty of spindles. I had to order them in from Sydney online (though the post office now has stock of them) and for now I have plenty. But you wouldn't think it would be that hard (but then I tried to go shopping for a P&S camera, MP3 player and some music CDs today - I got the camera though it was the only place that had the one I got and they were low on stock but the rest well forget it go to amazon for the CDs and might check out Harveys tomorrow for the MP3 or its back to internet shopping.
