  1. I mentioned this when it came up but everyone was so whipped into a frenzy they didn't take the time to think about what animals go overseas for good reasons not just cattle and sheep. Horses - currently we have Star Witness due to race OS tonight before coming back for the spring, shuttle stallions go OS and then back (and vice versa), have heard of equestrian horses being sold for squillions overseas, racehorses are sold to overseas locations such as Hong Kong (and note HK is the one place that rehomes most after racing they either join one of the riding schools or go back to the country they came from - or another if preferred). The Olympics - the equestrian team exports their horses over to the Olympics and then back and the same for any other big event like the World Equestrain games. And then there is cattle breeding stock that are apparently sold OS - no crime there but people dont realise about that or do they think about people who move overseas and take their animals with them (how many questions get asked about how to export and import dogs on this forum). And what about military/police dogs that go overseas - they are also technically live export of animals. Now the activists dont care about the 'good' OS transport of animals only to get everyone reacting. Blanket banning is wrong and a reaction to make the politicians look good for the masses as has been mentioned
  2. Standing out in the rain, being out in the rain last March when that hailstorm hit Melb (that was fun ...not) though at least got under cover as the marbles started pelting and before the golf balls. Being out in the rain and wind for hours at horse events. Have bugs & flys land/crwl on you when taking pics of a race finish. Copping a fly to the eye at the finish of a Cox Plate (got the pics though). Standing out in 42 degree weather to take photos all day with even the shade not all that effective.
  3. Unless its changed (which it may have Goolwa is a lot bigger now) the closest emergency vet was over at Victor. Had someone got enough to report the car best to put the emphasis on that the car nearly hit a PEDESTRIAN. ie the person who was trying to get them to slow down. Its not illegal to hit an animal but it is to knowingly not slow down etc near a person who is on the road. The dog is obviously additional info but drivers have to watch out for pedestrians (think the ad campaign about drunks wandering onthe road).
  4. Wrell said Linda - same here. Anyone using equipment for generating income should get the gear insured outside the normal home and contents as the insurance companys can use that as a reason to to pay apparently (but then I guess when I was told that I had already had the business going with the business name for some time)

Something seems to help. Have got her back walking 3/4 of what we used to - starting to let her run off the lead too at the park. Basically if we get back and she is showing any soreness its on with the rapigel (and lightweight rug since she's worked out how to try and lick her shoulder) and then when it dries I brush the area out as it clogs up any dirt from rolling and sticks (brush meaning lightly rake, comb and glove to get the area all freed up again). Then if still alittle stiff the magnetic rug goes on for an hour or two. Now whether its the getting back to exercise and the muscles are building up while the nails are starting to be worn down, the rapigel the rubbing etc of the shoulder to put it on and brush it out or the heat from the rugs or the magnetic affect. I dont know but something or a combination seems to be doing something to reduce the lameness.
  6. That will do it. I can't take fast action shots in low light for the same reason. Even really overcast days can be tricky. Unfortunately the only solutions I've come up with involve changing the time of day I take these kinds of shots or upgrading my camera. I can't wait 'til I can afford the 5DII. Been something I've been doing ever since I got a digital SLR - the only time the noise came up was when the image was underexposed slightly. Try over exposing the image and see if that helps. Current SLRs are more advanced than the 10D I did most of the big trots meeting with when the interdom was in town and I was able to avoid noise by the final but I had to get the exposure right (and auto wont do it for you YOU have to change the settings if there is anything at all that its reading off that a bit brighter in the scene).
  7. Make sure the photo is correctly exposed and that should reduce incidence of noise. I never use under 400 ISO and really its only when I get to ISO 1250 and above I stgart to see noise on the images on the computer (but when printed it is not that visible). However if you underexpose an image there is far more likely to be noise appearing.
  8. Was it an emergency? Was the dog extremely sick when taken in for surgery? Were there complications? Emergency operation is far more expensive than a simple desexing operation. Vets usually explain the invoice/receipt and answer questions then so your friend would be best placed going back and at least asking the vet surgery what each cost was for if they really think it was overpriced for saving the dog.

She hates it - I find it attacts the dirt in her coat and needs to be combed out a couple of hours after being put on to dry properly (to stop the coat getting a little 'clumpy'). Seems to be helping but then it could also be the rubbing it in and the grooming later that is massaging the area (or probably bit of both). Still usually has the limp when she gets up but not the 'my leg is going to fall off' hobble and we have been able to go for the 10 min walk each day without her getting noticably worse. Might try to go a little further (bigger circle) tomorrow as the magnetic coat is due to turn up at some stage. The highlight of her day is going for a walk and on lead walks are easier to control than pent up energy used for bolting around the yard like a nutcase. Or might try the apply a little before we go then let her roll in the dirt etc wash off the area then apply the 'after workout' (as you woudl a horse) as I have been putting int on straight after we get back. Havent done that yet as the surrounds of the house were sprayed on Monday and was still stinking this morning.
  10. I'll also point out you can set some cameras (well the 7D) to avoid 'stuff' coming into frame though I never had a problem with jump wings especially getting in the way but then I use to only take the photos I needed (2 or 3 at a jump) and kept the centre point on the dog. The cameras if they are quick enough to pick up a wing will be quick enough to go back to the subject. However head on autofocus sometimes no matter how brilliant the camera they will struggle to keep up with the dog so their feet will be right but the head might be out if its a darker dog or not really nice a brightly lit.
  11. They look pretty good to me I was expecting blurred balls of fluff from your description I've only been to one agility trial to practice so far, but found it tricky to get 'nice' looking shots as there is so much clutter and stuff going on in the background at these events. Next time I'll think about my positioning a lot more and practice, practice, practice This was my first attempt.... http://s189.photobucket.com/albums/z49/scr...20April%202011/ Thanks! I took plenty of blurred balls of fluff photos, I just deleted them Lots were like this Love your shots The camera has focussed on the background - with head on you are best to focus on the rail on manual focus, set it on 1/1000th and F8 (and whatever ISO suits the conditions) and taken the photo as the dog goes over the jump. The manual focus means the focal point is the bar, the 1/1000th freezes the image and the F8 gives you enough depth of field to have the whole dog in focus not just the bit above the bar. Of course Im assuming you arent on extreme zoom at that point as being on the extreme end of a zoom with cause issues with teh depth of field.
  12. If the dog was attacked and now is dog agressive why is the owner letting it run free in a dog park with other dogs? Or if its only agressive with one breed why is the owner not putting it back on the lead when a dog of that breed enters the park? The owner of teh dog that was attacked should report it to the council with as many details as they can get. I had an issue where two shitz tsu dogs were always off the lead and the owner found it funny that they rushed and circled other dogs. To protect MY dog I reported it after the second or third time (first benefit of doubt til I saw the moron laughing and yelled at him - second time he was still laughing til I chased off his dogs - third time I charged them as they charged us and they backed off/bolted away (I had tried to go around but they came at us anyway) - fourth time a girl had them there and they appeared from amongst bushes so I had to chase them off. I suggested to the council the owner needed someone to have a word with them about being responsible and consequences (take on the wrong big dog and two dead little dogs) and when it came up in passing with other dog owners I suggested the same. Since then have seen similar pair of dogs being walked on a lead a few times and looking well under control. Some owners need the authorities to educate them of whats right and wrong in regard to others.
  13. YOu can do one of two things. Put it on autofocus and put it on AI Servo. Set the ISO on 400 so it has a chance for a higher speed (or if you go manual you want 1/1000th with whatever aperture suits). Or go manual focus and focus on the centre of the jump and put it on F8, 1/1000th and ISO 400 or a little higher (if its sunny 400 will be fine). Pan with dog and take the photo when the dog should be halfway over the jump. Both methods work but you have to take the pic at the right time for the second one.
  14. Thats what I was thinking - this is our dog who was 12 a few weeks back. Photos were taken in mid March (and it was a cool day not that she cared) http://www.barnesphotography.com.au/reynel...r11/IMG7293.jpg
  15. I have heard of it in the US - didn't think there was such a problem here! Our dog is black and she prefers black dogs - its hard to believe they would be the last to be placed in homes.

First dose of it this morning and dont know about the dog but my hand is doingthe deep heat but weird cool sensation thing over an hour later. She certainly hates the smell of it though!
  17. put an order in with a site called dogsuppliesonline.com.au after lunch and got the order dispatched notification later in the afternoon. If it gets here before Friday I will be very impressed.
  18. Thanks - red bubble seem to be the wrong size but did find somewhere in Sydney that does it so have ordered one of those plus some mats to do it myself and will go from there (as in attach the photo and leave them 'displayed' somewhere in the house for a few weeks and see how they go. BUt now Im wondering what they mean by max size - if thats max size of the photo or max size of the photo and matting combined.

I've ordered it online from a couple of places as seems everyone in Adelaide watches Today Tonight and were convinced by those old people as both Horseland and Bonnetts are currently sold out (and plenty of people still asking by mid morning today). The world stopping for a week has caused delays with everything. HAve also now heard from others saying how it works on dogs and humans and seems a really old remedy from the ingredients. Have also ordered a magnetic rug to see if that helps too (If it doesnt help her at least I can put it on my back/shoulder!).
  20. Thanks so just need matt board from an arts supply store and cut to size (I assumr just needs to be a couple of inches as a border) and then just some double sided tape to attach the photo?
  21. Hi Just wondering if anyone has mounted their photos on card or board for exhibition/competiton? JUst wondering where you get the board or card and how you affixed the photo to it. Thanks for any advice

Thanks - plan to give it a try. The old bloke playing bowls were pretty convincing and someone at work had also mention stuff used on horses was good for people but didnt have the product name. Guess the advertorial stories on TT sometimes may be useful.

Does anyone use this? It was on TT tonight in regard as a horse product used on people and these old people were finding it fantastic. OF course forget the oldpeople Im looking going hang on people, horses ......dogs and of course moments later they have a big close up for treatment of horses and dogs. So does anyone use it and if so how do you avoid it being licked off or ending up on the carpet etc ? And how effective is it?
  24. yes they do - when I was young one of our dogs died and the other just stayed depressed for months afterwards (and one day she just perked up again - even though she was an afghan that usually just slept on a bean bag you could tell the day she picked up again). Mind you not long after we lost him we got a 3 month old puppy that decided her ears were playthings. Yet when the afghan died the now adult golden retriever just kept looking for her to come home (she went to the vet and didnt come back whereas the other dog died at home and was buried there) for a few weeks before he just gave up - not depressed just 'where is she' and tryingf to check the front door for a while.
  25. F8, ISO 400 and speed 1/1000th on a sunny day - if a dog is moving you want it set on AI Servo or the photos wont be so good. But please go and get the magic lantern book on the 7D as it goes into more depth on how to set the camera up to take the photos you want - its a more complex camera than the XXXD or XXrange
